Espers are individuals who possess supernatural abilities in the world of Neverness to Everness. They represent humans who have adapted to the presence of Anomalies, developing extraordinary powers that set them apart from ordinary people.
Origin of Powers
Throughout history, Anomalies have integrated so deeply into the world that some humans have adapted to develop supernatural abilities. Espers may awaken their powers at birth or develop them later in life through various circumstances.
The Homology Theory, one of the existing hypotheses in academia, suggests that Esper abilities may share the same origin as Anomalies. According to this theory, Esper powers are not derived from human biological functions but are rather powers granted to humans from an external source.
Physical Characteristics
Many Espers display distinctive physical traits that mark them as supernatural beings. These can include animal features such as cat ears (Nanally), horns (Sakiri), wolf-man traits (Skia), or vampire characteristics (Fadia). Other Espers may have unusual skin colors or other supernatural markers.
However, not all Espers have visible markers of their abilities. Some appear completely human while possessing significant supernatural powers.
Role in Society
Espers serve vital roles in Hethereau's society. Many work for the Bureau of Anomaly Control in various capacities, using their powers to contain and nullify dangerous Anomalies. Others work independently as Anomaly hunters (like the Eibon team) or in specialized roles that leverage their unique abilities.
The Bureau maintains records of Espers and their abilities, deploying them strategically based on mission requirements.
Esper Abilities in Gameplay
In combat, Esper abilities form the core of the game's Esper Cycle system. Each character possesses unique powers associated with one of six attributes (Light, Zero, Curse, Dark, Soul, Image) that can be combined with others to trigger powerful synergy reactions.
These abilities also enable unique traversal methods, such as Nanally's Anti-Gravity power that allows flight over buildings.
