Overview
Items acquired through theft, pickpocketing, or poaching in Crimson Desert cannot be sold to regular merchants. Attempting to sell stolen property at a normal vendor will not show those items in the sell list. Instead, you need to track down specialized dealers who operate outside the law. These underground contacts fall into three categories: Black Market vendors for general stolen goods, Livestock Fences for stolen animals, and Wagon Fences for stolen carts and wagons. Each type of fence accepts only the category of goods it specializes in, so knowing where each one is located saves time and avoids frustration.
This guide covers every known fence location, what each one buys, and tips for maximizing your profit from a life of crime in Pywel.
Types of Fences
There are three distinct types of underground dealers in the game. Each one handles a different category of stolen property. You cannot mix and match; a Livestock Fence will not buy a stolen painting, and a Black Market vendor will not accept a stolen horse.
Fence Type | Accepts | Notable Locations |
|---|---|---|
Black Market Vendor | General stolen items: coin pouches, jewelry boxes, paintings, vases, crafting materials, and other lootable goods | Grimrak (southeast of Hernand); Goldleaf Tradeposts (available later in the story) |
Livestock Fence | Stolen animals: goats, pigs, chickens, and other livestock you can carry or lead | Livestock Black Market near Grimrak's shop, southeast of Hernand on the west side of the river |
Wagon Fence | Stolen carts and wagons that you have driven to the depot | Hernand Wagon Fence, east of Hernand along the Nas River, south of the Halssius Apothecary |
Black Market Vendors
Black Market vendors are the primary outlet for most stolen goods. They buy everything from pilfered coin pouches to artwork lifted from noble estates. The first one you encounter is Grimrak, a goblin vendor who runs the Back Alley Shop southeast of Hernand. His stall sits at the end of the road closest to the river, on the west side. If you head east out of Hernand, past the large model castle on the left, then turn left down the road and follow the track to the vendor, you will find him.
Grimrak is the same vendor who sells criminal equipment like the Mask (10 copper coins) and back-alley keys (30 copper each). He doubles as a buyer for stolen goods, making his location a one-stop shop for anyone engaged in the Crime System.
Later in the game, additional Black Market vendors become available at Goldleaf Tradeposts scattered across Pywel. The Goldleaf Tradepost in the Serkis Estate, a short ride south of Hernand, is one of the earliest additional options. As you progress through the main story and unlock new regions, more Goldleaf Tradeposts open up, giving you convenient fencing options no matter where your crime spree takes you.
What Black Market Vendors Buy
Any item flagged as stolen in your inventory can be sold to a Black Market vendor. Common high-value stolen items include:
Coin Pouches obtained from pickpocketing NPCs. Open them in your inventory first to convert them into currency, or sell them unopened for a flat rate.
Jewelry Boxes and Paintings found in wealthy homes, bank vaults, and noble estates. These fetch the highest prices among container loot.
Silver Bars and Valuables found in strongboxes throughout Pywel. Strongboxes require solving a mechanical puzzle before you can loot them.
Crafting Materials taken from shop shelves and market stalls. While individually low-value, they add up when stolen in bulk.
Keys lifted from NPCs or containers. Keys are more useful for unlocking doors than selling, but surplus keys can be fenced for a small profit.
Livestock Fence
Stolen animals cannot be sold to Black Market vendors. Instead, you need to bring them to a Livestock Fence. To steal livestock, approach a farm animal while wearing your Mask, pick it up, and carry it away from the farm. Smaller animals like chickens and goats can be carried on foot, while larger animals may need to be led.
The earliest Livestock Fence is located near Grimrak's Back Alley Shop, on the eastern road next to Hernand, on the west side of the river. The Livestock Black Market sits directly opposite Grimrak's stall, making it easy to sell stolen animals and general stolen goods in the same trip.
Selling stolen livestock is also required for some of the Above the Law Challenges. The challenge "The Herder's Lament" specifically requires selling 3 goats to Bram at the Greymane Camp's ranch. Keep this in mind if you are working through those challenges alongside your regular theft activity.
Wagon Fence
Wagons and carts represent one of the more lucrative forms of stolen property, but they require a different selling process. You cannot simply carry a wagon in your inventory. Instead, you must physically drive the stolen vehicle to a Wagon Fence depot.
To steal a wagon, approach one while wearing your Mask and interact with it. If the wagon is occupied, you may need to kick the driver off first, which counts as horse theft under the Crime System and carries a higher Contribution penalty than simple container theft. Once you have control of the wagon, drive it to the nearest Wagon Fence.
The earliest Wagon Fence is the Hernand Wagon Fence, found east of Hernand along the Nas River. Follow the road leading south from the Halssius Apothecary to find the depot. Wagon Fences can be found in most major regions as you progress through the game.
Maximizing Profit
Selling stolen goods is one of the fastest ways to earn currency in the early hours of the game, but it comes with trade-offs. Every theft costs 5 Contribution EXP in the region where you committed the crime, regardless of whether anyone witnessed it. Planning your theft runs carefully helps maximize income while minimizing reputation damage.
Target high-value buildings first. The Royal Trading Post's Product Storage building in Hernand contains dozens of containers and can yield roughly 90 silver in a single run.
Rob the Hernand Bank early. The bank vault is one of the richest single-run theft opportunities available. See How to Rob Hernand Bank for a full walkthrough.
Sell everything in one trip. Since Grimrak's shop and the Livestock Fence sit right next to each other southeast of Hernand, you can offload general stolen goods and stolen animals at the same location.
Buy keys from the Back Alley Shop. Keys cost 30 copper each and open locked doors and containers that hold premium loot. The investment pays for itself quickly.
Open Coin Pouches before selling. Pickpocketed coin pouches can be opened in your inventory to extract currency directly. In some cases, opening them yields more value than selling them to a fence as sealed items.
Avoid unnecessary violence. Assault and murder carry heavy Contribution penalties (-30 EXP) and generate large bounties. Stick to theft (-5 EXP) for a better risk-to-reward ratio.
Contribution Cost
Selling stolen goods to a fence does not add an extra Contribution penalty. The Contribution loss happens at the moment you commit the crime, not when you sell the stolen item afterward. This means there is no downside to holding stolen goods in your inventory until you find a convenient fence. You will not incur additional penalties by waiting.
However, keep in mind that the cumulative -5 Contribution per theft adds up over a long crime spree. If your Contribution in a region drops too low, vendor prices increase, certain NPCs refuse to interact with you, and some quests become unavailable. Balance your theft income against your reputation needs, especially in regions where you rely on vendor access or faction services.
Tips
Stolen items are marked in your inventory. Regular vendors will not display them in the sell interface; only fences will.
If you accidentally sold your mask, buy a new one from any Back Alley Shop for 10 copper.
Wagon Fences exist in most major regions, so you do not need to drive a stolen wagon all the way back to Hernand if you are far from the starting area.
Bounties are region-specific. You can steal heavily in one area and still sell goods freely in another region where your record is clean.
Clearing a bounty at a Confessional before selling is often worth the cost, since it prevents guards from ambushing you on the way to the fence.
