Sanctum of Absolution

Added context about role in the overwhelming beings questline and Ator prerequisites
The Sanctum of Absolution is one of four Sanctums scattered across the continent of Pywel in Crimson Desert. Like all Sanctums, it is described as a place imbued with spiritual power, reportedly created in the ancient past to restore the world and its providence. The Antumbra revere Sanctums as sacred ground because of the immense power they hold.
The Sanctum of Absolution is associated with the Second Edict, which declares: "Believe that only by accepting Death within the embrace of the Guide may irreverence be cleansed."
Unlike most other Sanctums, the Sanctum of Absolution includes a mandatory boss fight against Antumbra's Sword, making it one of the more challenging cleansing encounters. Players should ensure they are well-leveled and stocked with recovery items before attempting it.
The Sanctum of Absolution is located in the Hernand region. An Abyss Nexus can be found near the site for fast travel access. The Sanctum sits among ancient stone ruins in an open area with several connected interior rooms that hold the puzzle components.
Sanctums become accessible after Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom, is encountered during Chapter 5 of the main story. Once unlocked, she asks Kliff to cleanse four sanctums in the Hernand region. Players can set waypoints to any Sanctum through their quest journal.
Before the puzzle can be attempted, players must defeat a boss called Antumbra's Sword. This is a mandatory encounter unique to the Sanctum of Absolution; the other Sanctums only require clearing standard enemies.
Before attempting the fight, make sure you have at least three Palmar Pills in your inventory, as these allow you to recover if you are downed. Refine your weapons and armor to tier three or four for adequate damage and defense. Invest Abyss Artifacts into the focus node on the skill tree to unlock Focus level 3, which helps maintain composure during long fights. Stock up on healing food (clear soup works well) and bring enough to outlast a lengthy battle of attrition.
Bring plenty of healing food and recovery items. The fight is a war of attrition, and running out of healing is the primary cause of failure.
Do not attempt the fight until you have sufficient health and stamina upgrades. A few strong skills on your weapon will make the fight much more manageable.
Avoid getting greedy with attack combos. Wait for the boss to finish its combo chains before retaliating with a few strikes, then back off.
Use the Stab move to apply passive bleed damage, which chips away at the boss's health between your attack windows.
When Antumbra's Sword powers up and creates a duplicate, focus entirely on dodging. The duplicate ground pound attack can kill in one hit.
Exploit edge positioning by keeping the boss near the arena boundary, which can create openings for stunlocking.
Watch out for the boss's Slashing Waves attack, which is unblockable and covers a long distance. When you see the charge-up animation (the sword glows and dips toward the ground), dodge sideways immediately. Do not try to outrun them by backpedaling, as the waves travel faster than your sprint speed. Sidestepping gives you a clear opening to rush in and counterattack.
The boss will occasionally vanish in a cloud of smoke and reappear behind you. When this happens, dodge immediately. If the boss's back is turned after reappearing, that is a safe window to land a few strikes before backing off.
Defeating Antumbra's Sword rewards an Abyss Artifact and the Vessel of Dark Pursuit, a powerful two-handed weapon with 25 attack, critical rate level 1, and the Wound of Darkness abyss core. This unique ability replicates the boss's own vertical slash move and is mapped to the Turning Slash input. The weapon remains effective well into the late game when refined. See the Hidden Treasure section below for the full stat breakdown.
After defeating Antumbra's Sword, the cleansing puzzle becomes available. The Sanctum of Absolution puzzle involves restoring a broken pillar and installing a hidden power cube.
Head south from where you fought the boss and enter the nearby building. Drop down through the hole in the floor to reach the room below at the end of the corridor. The broken pillar piece is sitting on the ground. Use Axiom Force to grab it and carry it back up to the surface.
Take the pillar piece to the broken pillar at the main Sanctum structure. Place it on the support and use a jumping Force Palm (Aerial Force Palm) to lock it into position, just like the other Sanctums.
Climb back up through the hole in the ceiling to the corridor where you fought the boss. At the far end of the corridor you will see a pile of clay pots. Smash all the pots to reveal the power cube hidden behind them.
Use Axiom Force to carry the power cube to the main Sanctum machine. Slam it into the square recess using Force Palm. With the pillar repaired and the cube installed, the Sanctum of Absolution is cleansed.
The Sanctum of Absolution's hidden treasure comes directly from defeating the Antumbra's Sword boss rather than from a separate secret chamber. This is the only Sanctum where the hidden treasure is locked behind a mandatory boss encounter instead of an environmental puzzle.
Defeating Antumbra's Sword drops the Vessel of Dark Pursuit, a powerful two-handed weapon with the following stats:
Stat | Value |
|---|---|
Attack | 25 |
Level 1 | |
The Wound of Darkness abyss core is a unique special ability mapped to the Turning Slash input. It replicates the boss's own vertical energy slash attack, making it one of the more visually impressive and damaging weapon abilities in the mid-game.
With 25 base attack, the Vessel of Dark Pursuit hits harder than most weapons available at this point in the story. It remains effective well into the late game when refined at a blacksmith. Players who want a strong two-handed option should prioritize this Sanctum, though they should be prepared for one of the toughest fights in Hernand.
Cleansing the Sanctum of Absolution awards several valuable rewards:
Reward | Details |
|---|---|
: The sanctum puzzle completion unlocks the Enhanced Kuku Pot blueprint at Grimnir's Kuku Shop. The Enhanced Kuku Pot is a required intermediate crafting material for advanced Kuku equipment, including the Kuku Marni Laser Helm and the Kuku Spear. | |
: Dropped by the Antumbra's Sword boss. A powerful two-handed weapon with 25 attack, Critical Rate Level 1, and the Wound of Darkness abyss core. | |
: Also dropped by Antumbra's Sword upon defeat. | |
Completing all four of Elowen's sanctums fulfills her portion of the cleansing quest and grants additional Abyss-related rewards. | -- |
The Sanctum of Absolution was cleansed.
Defeating Antumbra's Sword at the Sanctum of Absolution is one of three prerequisites for challenging Ator, the Antumbra Archon at the Cloister of Ruination. Ator is classified as an overwhelming being, the highest tier of boss in the game. The three generals that must be defeated before the Cloister becomes accessible are:
Antumbra's Sword at the Sanctum of Absolution (south of Hernand)
Antumbra's Spear at the Sanctum of Revelation (Serpent Marsh island)
Antumbra's Staff at the Sanctum of Solace (in Pailune)
Only after all three generals are defeated do the seals on the Cloister of Ruination break, granting access to the Ator boss fight.
