Overview

The Legionary Gladius is a one-handed sword in Crimson Desert found in the Hernand region. Described in-game as a sword once used by ancient warriors, it was mass-produced for military use but remains remarkably sturdy and powerful to this day. The weapon sits inside a sealed chamber behind a candle statue puzzle at Three Saints' Fall, making it one of the exploration-based pickups that rewards players who wander off the main roads.
With 12 Attack and an innate Attack Speed Lv. 1 bonus, the Legionary Gladius is a noticeable step up from baseline starter swords like the Glenmore Sword (10 Attack). It also features 3 Abyss Gear Slots, giving it room for meaningful customization through Abyss Cores. As a one-handed weapon, it leaves the off-hand free for a shield or a secondary weapon, fitting into a variety of playstyles. It is not the flashiest weapon in the game, but its accessibility and balanced stats make it a practical choice during the early hours of exploration in Hernand.

The Legionary Gladius sits in the lower-mid tier of one-handed swords by raw stats. Its 12 Attack ties it with the Wells Sword and Sword of the Wolfwhile stronger alternatives like the Dekarr Sword (14 Attack) and Golden Sword (16 Attack) outpace it later in the game. However, its 3 Abyss Gear Slots give it more upgrade potential than some weapons with higher base Attack, and its early availability means players can refine it and slot it with cores well before those stronger swords become accessible.

How to Obtain
The Legionary Gladius cannot be purchased from merchants or crafted at a workbench. It is a world pickup locked behind a simple environmental puzzle in the Hernand region. From Hernand Castlehead north until you reach a large bridge. Move along the top of the cliff near the base of Free Saints Falls (also referred to as Three Saints' Fall). Stick to the right side of the path, and you will find a stone statue of justice holding two unlit candles with a locked gate directly behind it.
The puzzle requires you to interact with the statue and light both candles to open the sealed gate. Follow these steps:
Travel to the Three Saints' Fall area in Hernand, positioned near the "D" marker on the in-game map.
Locate the stone statue holding two unlit candles. It sits along the right side of the cliff path near the base of the falls.
Interact with the statue and light the first candle.
Light the second candle on the same statue to activate the mechanism.
The locked gate behind the statue opens automatically once both candles are lit.
Enter the chamber and open the treasure chest inside to collect the Legionary Gladius.
This is one of the simpler puzzles in the Hernand region. There is no time limit, no combat encounter, and no specific quest, item, or ability required to complete it. If you are already exploring the area around Hernand Castle and the northern cliffs, the detour takes only a minute or two.
Combat Tips
The Legionary Gladius is a straightforward one-handed sword that performs well in the early game without requiring any special techniques to use effectively. Its Attack Speed Lv. 1 bonus means swings come out quickly, giving you enough time to land a full combo and recover before enemies can retaliate. This makes it forgiving for players who are still learning the combat system's timing.
As a one-handed weapon, the Legionary Gladius leaves the off-hand slot open. Players running a sword-and-shield build will find it especially effective for defensive play. The quick recovery between swings allows you to land a full counter-attack combo after a successful parry before the enemy's stagger window closes. Alternatively, equipping a secondary one-handed weapon opens up dual-wield combos for more aggressive setups.
The 3 Abyss Gear Slots are the weapon's strongest selling point for extended use. Slot Abyss Cores that boost critical hit chance or add elemental damage to compensate for the moderate base Attack. Even a small investment in refinement at a Grind Stone can push the Legionary Gladius into mid-game viability, keeping it competitive longer than its raw numbers might suggest.
The Hwando is often considered one of the strongest early one-handed swords in Crimson Desert, but it requires more effort to obtain. The Legionary Gladius is a reliable bridge weapon for players who have not yet acquired stronger alternatives. Whether you keep it equipped or sell it for 2.45 Silver Coins once you find an upgrade, picking it up costs nothing and takes almost no time.
Comparison to Other One-Handed Swords
Weapon | Attack | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|
10 | Lv. 1 | Starter-tier sword; the Legionary Gladius is a direct upgrade | |
Legionary Gladius | 12 | Lv. 1 | 3 Abyss Gear Slots; exploration pickup at Three Saints' Fall |
12 | Lv. 1 | Same Attack tier; obtained through different means | |
12 | Lv. 1 | Ties on stats; choice depends on availability | |
14 | Lv. 1 | Next step up in Attack for one-handed swords | |
16 | Lv. 1 | Significantly stronger; available later in progression | |
17+ | Varies | One of the best early-game one-handed swords overall |
At 12 Attack, the Legionary Gladius provides a 20% increase over the Glenmore Sword while sharing the same Attack Speed tier. It ties with the Wells Sword and Sword of the Wolfbut its free acquisition through exploration gives it an edge for players who are not ready to spend currency or tackle harder content. For long-term use, the 3 Abyss Gear Slots allow it to scale better than some numerically stronger swords that have fewer slots.
Lore
The in-game description identifies the Legionary Gladius as a sword once used by ancient warriors. Despite being mass-produced for military formations, the blade remains remarkably sturdy and powerful long after the era that forged it. The name itself points to an organized military origin, likely one of the historical legions or standing armies that once operated across the Pywel continent.
The gladius is a short, double-edged sword historically favored by disciplined infantry for its effectiveness in close-quarters combat. Its placement behind a sealed chamber at Three Saints' Fall suggests the weapon was intentionally stored or hidden, possibly as part of a cache belonging to soldiers who once passed through the Hernand region. Whether the statue of justice that guards the chamber has any deeper connection to the legion that produced the sword is left to the player's interpretation.
Tips
Visit Three Saints' Fall early in your exploration of the Hernand region. The Legionary Gladius is a meaningful free upgrade over starter weapons.
The candle puzzle has no time limit, no combat encounter, and no prerequisites. You can solve it at any point without preparation.
Look for the statue near the "D" marker on the Hernand map, along the right side of the cliff path near the base of the falls.
If you already have a stronger weapon by the time you find this one, the 2.45 Silver Coins sell value is modest. Consider keeping it as a backup or selling it for quick coin.
Take advantage of the 3 Abyss Gear Slots. Equipping cores that add critical hit chance or elemental damage can extend the weapon's usefulness well into the mid-game.
Pair the Legionary Gladius with a shield for a balanced defensive build, or equip a secondary one-handed weapon for dual-wield combos.
Refine the weapon at a Grind Stone to boost its base Attack. Even one or two refinement levels make a noticeable difference in early encounters.

Hidden Pickup Walkthrough
The Legionary's Gladius is the single earliest hidden weapon pickup in the game. With the right routing, it can be in your hands within the first ten minutes of a brand-new save, and the puzzle gating the chest is straightforward enough that no advanced abilities or items are required to claim it.
Find the location. Open your map and locate the City of Hernand. Look north for Three Saints Falls. The chest sits in the small gap between the two L letters in the name on the map, on the path you would naturally take heading toward Hernand Castle. The location is set up so that any player following the main story line through this area will pass close to it; the trick is knowing to step off the road and look for the entry.
Solve the candle puzzle. Inside the small chamber are two candles. Light both candles to open the sealed door. No combat is required, and there is no penalty for misreading the puzzle; simply interact with each candle in turn.
Claim the chest. The chest beyond the door holds the Legionary's Gladius with its three Abyss Cores slots already counted in. A memory item also sits nearby; pick that up while you are in the chamber.
Dual-Wield Notes
Because the Gladius is a one-handed sword, it slots into the off-hand alongside another one-handed weapon. Equipping it next to the starter sword from the beginning of the game effectively doubles available gear-slot count and DPS from minute one of a new save. The pairing trades the shield slot for the second weapon; players who prefer a defensive build can keep a shield up instead, and use the Gladius as their primary.
Later in the run, the Gladius pairs naturally with the Hollow Visage or Survivor's Solitude once those hidden pickups become accessible. The combined Abyss Core count across two one-handers reaches six, which is one above the natural maximum on a single two-handed weapon. See the Hidden Weapons Guide for the full dual-wield routing.
Why This Pickup Matters Early
Zero-effort upgrade. The puzzle is two candles. There is no boss fight, no climbing, no waterfall stab, and no key purchase required.
Three Abyss Core slots from minute one. Most early-game replacements for the starter sword do not match the Gladius's slot count, so the early customization headroom is unmatched.
Same path as Hernand Castle. If the main story has the player heading toward Hernand Castle, the Gladius is essentially free loot on the way. The detour is measured in seconds.
