The elemental attacks system in Crimson Desert gives players access to four powerful skills that channel Lightning, Frost, Flame, and Wind into combat. Each elemental skill is unlocked by completing a series of Abyss puzzle challenges found inside the game's Spire dungeons. These skills cannot be purchased from the Skill Tree with Abyss Artifacts; they must be earned through exploration and puzzle-solving.
The four elemental skills are Lightning Surge, Frost Mantle, Flame Strike, and Storm Veil. Once you have unlocked all four, you gain access to the Imbue Elements meta-skill, which lets you weave elemental effects into your existing combat abilities such as Turning Slash, Charged Shot, and Force Palm. This guide covers every step required to unlock each skill, the Spire locations you need to visit, the puzzles you will solve, and the prerequisite abilities you should have before attempting each challenge.
Before diving into the Spire challenges, you should invest in several key skills from the Skill Tree. Without these abilities, certain puzzles are either impossible or extremely difficult to complete.
Skill | Branch | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
Spirit (Green) | Used to grab, move, and reposition objects such as batteries, laser cubes, and puzzle controls. Upgraded Axiom Force extends your range and lets you interact with distant mechanisms. Required in nearly every Abyss puzzle. | |
Spirit (Green) | Slows down time and lets you mark and shoot multiple targets with your bow. Required for the Vault of Vengeance and Courtyard of Precision puzzles inside the Spire of the Stars. For Kliff, unlocking requires Focus Level 2 + Marksman Level 2 on the Spirit Skill Tree, plus 1 Abyss Artifact. Damiane has it unlocked by default. | |
Spirit (Green) | Lifts heavy objects and doors in the environment. Needed to raise gates in the Vault of Vengeance and to reposition wall panels in the Spire of Ringing Truth. | |
Stamina (Blue) | Temporarily activates yellow crystals by channeling light onto them. Used in the Frostbitten Paradise and Sanctorum of Darkness puzzles to power mechanisms and disable force fields. | |
Stamina (Blue) | Enables gliding through the air. Required for the Riddle Square challenge inside the Spire of Clockwork, where you must fly through a series of rings within a time limit. |
Upgrading Axiom Force is strongly recommended before tackling any Spire. The extended grab range makes several puzzles significantly easier and opens up shortcuts (such as climbing to rafters to skip laser grids in the Vault of Vengeance).
Lightning Surge is the first elemental skill most players encounter. It is unlocked through the Spire of the Stars, located southwest of the Greymane Camp in Hernand. You visit this Spire during Chapter 4 (Forbidden Knowledge) as part of the main quest, but you can reach it earlier by traveling overland to Scholastone.
When activated, Lightning Surge releases electrical current into the ground, creating a field of electricity that damages and staggers all enemies within range. It is an area-of-effect ability that consumes Spirit, making it ideal for crowd control against groups of enemies.
Step | Puzzle | Solution |
|---|---|---|
1 | Entry Puzzle | Examine the murals on either side of the floor to identify each shape's position. In the central chamber, hang on each shape to pull it down one position at a time. From left to right: Hourglass stays at top, Circle goes to the second rung, Square goes to the bottom rung, Triangle goes to the third rung. Take the elevator to the top. |
2 | Sanctum of Insight | Either complete the puzzle normally or invest enough skill points into Stamina to brute-force your way to the top using climbing and aerial force punches. Activate the Abyss switch at the top. |
3 | Secret Garden | Three steps: (1) Use Axiom Force to grab the floating battery near the water and move it to the open receptacle to activate the second laser. (2) Stand behind each laser and use Axiom Force to reposition the beams so they hit the mirrors on the opposite side of the room. (3) Aim both lasers at the yellow crystals above the door until both crystals turn blue. In the next area, connect the large stone wire to activate the Abyss switch. |
4 | Vault of Vengeance | Requires Focused Shot. Use Axiom Force on the Abyss Cube to remove the force field. Shoot the blue targeting reticles on either side of the large door with Focused Shot. Use Nature's Grasp to lift the door. In the next room, shoot four smaller yellow reticles above each pillar with Focused Shot to deactivate the laser grid. Grab the golden sword reward and jump to the chamber below. Either dodge the laser beams or use upgraded Axiom Force to climb to the rafters above them. Slot the battery on the far side to complete the puzzle. |
5 | Requires Focused Shot. Hit all floating yellow targets simultaneously across three rounds of increasing difficulty: first 2 targets, then 3 targets, then 4 targets. After clearing the ground segments, the powered updraft launches you into the air. While airborne, use Focused Shot to mark 3 targets while falling, then perform an aerial Force Palm to activate the final Abyss switch. With all five puzzles complete, Lightning Surge unlocks. | Requires Focused Shot. Hit all floating yellow targets around the arena at ground level. Use the powered updraft to float up to the rings above, then use Focused Shot to hit the remaining targets from the air. Return to the ground and activate the Abyss switch. |
With all five puzzles complete, Lightning Surge unlocks. This skill is best used when surrounded by multiple enemies, taking full advantage of its area-of-effect potential.
Frost Mantle is unlocked through the Spire of Ringing Truth, located at Five-Finger Mountain in Pailune. This is an ice-themed vertical dungeon that combines platforming, ranged combat, and puzzle-solving.
Frost resistance: The temperature drops sharply in this region. Bring frost resistance gear or consume food that temporarily boosts frost resistance. Without it, your Stamina drains quickly, making key jumps impossible.
Upgraded bow: The boss at the bottom of the Spire, Priscus the Ancient, hits hard and flies around the arena. Invest in ranged skills to deal damage or knock him out of the air.
Upgraded Axiom Force: Essential for ascending the tower quickly and clearing platforming sections.
Step | Puzzle | Solution |
|---|---|---|
1 | Tower Ascent | Use upgraded Axiom Force to ascend to the top of the tower. Near the bell at the top, use a precision jump or Axiom Force to reach the final platform (frost resistance is critical here for maintaining Stamina). Shoot the rotted wood above the bell to cause it to crash through the entire tower, opening the path to the basement. |
2 | Boss Fight: Priscus the Ancient | Jump down to the basement and defeat Priscus the Ancient. He is an aerial boss, so ranged attacks are essential. Use your bow and ranged skills to deal damage while dodging his powerful strikes. |
3 | Ether Rest | Navigate behind the central pillar and use Axiom Force on the yellow dial. Rotate the structure until you can enter. Float up to the next section. |
4 | Ether Rest (continued) | Use Nature's Grasp to lift a wall into place. Step back and use Axiom Force on the revealed control to rotate the structure and create a gap. In the next room, use wind turbines to ascend halfway up. Locate the power block and store it in your Cuckoo Pot. Climb to the top chamber, discard the power block, grab it with Axiom Force, and place it in the receptacle. Climb the spiral wire and activate the Abyss switch. |
5 | Frostbitten Paradise | Stand on the square platform opposite the battery to open a floor hatch. Grab the floating battery and move it to the north wall receptacle. Use a laser cube from the hallway, place it facing south into the yellow crystal to activate a floating platform. Cross to the far end, move a power cube with Axiom Force to activate a conveyor belt. Use the laser cubes and conveyor belt mechanics to activate both yellow crystals. In the final section, use Axiom Force to push a battery near the force field, then use Blinding Flash to temporarily disable it. Move the battery through and slot it into place. Activate the Abyss switch. |
6 | Path of Trials | Stay near small torches to avoid ticking cold damage. Move through the area to the lake section. Climb or use Axiom Force to reach the next level. At the far end, remove the battery on the left side to lower a barrier. Climb up, grab the frozen power block, and carry it to the doorway to thaw it (or dunk it in lava if needed). Return the thawed block to the upper receptacle and set it with Axiom Force. Activate the Abyss switch. |
With the Path of Trials complete, Frost Mantle unlocks. When activated, it sends out a blast of freezing air in an area around Kliff. Enemies frozen by Frost Mantle can be shattered if they are close to dying, making it one of the most satisfying elemental skills to weave into combat.
Flame Strike continues the same path through the Spire of Ringing Truth. If you have already completed the Frost Mantle puzzles, you are more than halfway done. The remaining Abyss challenges extend from the Path of Trials along the Sleet Isle chain of connected Abyss islands.
Step | Puzzle | Solution |
|---|---|---|
1 | Sanctorum of Darkness | Use Axiom Force to manipulate a laser beam and shoot it at the yellow crystal across the gap. Move sideways to find an angle on the second crystal and use Blinding Flash to temporarily activate it. Hold Blinding Flash long enough for the giant fan blades to reach full speed. Use the fans to cross the gap and activate the Abyss switch. |
2 | Loop of Life | This puzzle features three massive suspended rings that must be powered. Drop to the first ring and grab the first power panel. Insert it on the face of the ring you are standing on. Grab the second panel on the far side and reposition it onto the stone tower between the first and second rings. A barrier drops, revealing a third panel. Insert it into the second ring. Dislodge the tower's panel using Axiom Force (drag to release it), carry it to the third ring, and slot it in the final receptacle. Activate the Abyss switch. |
3 | Tree of Slumber | A rotation-based puzzle using a central console with control mechanisms. Stab the right-side control: it lights up two pillars in front plus one behind you. Rotate left until all three go down and activate. Move to the control closest to the entrance (left of your current position): it activates one pillar behind and one slightly to the right. Rotate right to align them with the larger pillar on your right, matching heights. Move to the opposite side (facing the entrance door), activate that control, and rotate left to lower three pillars until all activate. Use Axiom Force to tether to the Abyss switch and then Force Current to activate it from a distance. If the central mechanism does not light up, reset by jumping in the lava and start over. |
With the Tree of Slumber complete, Flame Strike unlocks. When activated, Kliff sends out a concentrated jet of flame directly in front of him, dealing high damage and knocking enemies back. It can hit multiple enemies in a line and is widely considered the most powerful of the four elemental skills due to its raw damage output.
Storm Veil is the final elemental skill and the only one gated behind story progression. You must complete the Chapter 8 quest Blood Coronation to receive the key that opens the Spire of Clockwork, located at Breezeblown Knoll on the eastern edge of Demeniss.
The Blood Coronation quest culminates in a boss fight against Lucien Bastier in his tower east of Demeniss. This fight is played exclusively as Damiane. After defeating Lucien, you receive the Spire of Clockwork Key along with four armor pieces. Travel to Breezeblown Knoll in eastern Demeniss and insert the key to enter the Spire.
Step | Puzzle | Solution |
|---|---|---|
1 | Tower Activation | Open the central door with the key. On the main floor, grab the thin horizontal yellow handle and pull it down to activate the lower section. Use upgraded Axiom Force to climb higher. Pull a second yellow lever about halfway up to activate the remaining tower mechanisms. Keep climbing until you reach the outside. Move around the tower's edge to an elevator and press the yellow button to ride it to the top. Enter the central chamber to materialize the Abyss portal. |
2 | Riddle Square | A timed gliding challenge. Requires Crow's Wing. Use Axiom Force on the yellow button at the center of the arena to begin. Ride the central fan upward with Crow's Wing, turn northeast, and glide through the short series of rings looping to the right. Drop to the platform below and use the horizontal wind burst to fly through three rings heading west. Take the fan up and glide through the tightly stacked vertical rings to the next platform. Use a final horizontal air burst to fly through the last set of rings and reach the Abyss switch. Beat the timer to activate it. |
Storm Veil functions as an on-demand smoke bomb. When activated, Kliff deploys a cloud of mist that causes enemies inside or behind it to lose track of him. This allows for repositioning, escaping dangerous situations, or setting up ambush attacks. While it is the least directly offensive of the four elemental skills, its tactical utility in both combat and exploration is significant.
Skill | Element | Spire | Region | Story Requirement | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Lightning | Chapter 4 (or reachable early) | AoE electrical field that damages and staggers nearby enemies | |||
Frost | None (optional area) | Freezing blast around the player; frozen enemies near death can shatter | |||
Fire | None (continues Frost Mantle path) | Forward flame jet with high damage and knockback; hits multiple targets in a line | |||
Wind | Chapter 8 (Blood Coronation) | Smoke bomb that breaks enemy tracking; allows repositioning and ambushes |
Once you have unlocked at least one elemental skill, you gain access to Imbue Elements, a meta-skill that lets you weave elemental effects into your existing combat abilities. However, to unlock all four levels of Imbue Elements, you need all four elemental skills. Imbue Elements requires Abyss Artifacts to level up.
To select which element you want active, hold right on the D-pad and choose the desired element from the radial menu. The active element determines which elemental effect is applied when you trigger an imbued ability.
Level | Unlocked Ability | How to Trigger | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | Press LT + RT during Turning Slash | Imbues your Turning Slash with the active element. Turning Slash is already one of the most powerful combat skills in the game, and adding elemental effects makes it devastating. The element adds secondary damage and a status effect (burn, freeze, shock, or obscure) to the attack. | |
2 | Automatic on Charged Shot | Automatically imbues your charged bow attacks with the equipped element. No additional input is needed beyond charging your bow as normal. Adds elemental damage and status effects to ranged attacks. | |
3 | Press LT + RT during Force Palm | Imbues Force Palm with the active element. Press the trigger combination during the Force Palm animation to add elemental damage and effects to this close-range skill. | |
4 | Press LT + RT during Meteor Kick | Imbues Meteor Kick with the active element. Note: As of early patches, Meteor Kick was temporarily removed from Kliff's skill tree. This is expected to be restored in a future update. When available, it adds elemental effects to this powerful aerial kick. |
While the guide above focuses on Kliff's progression, Damiane and Oongka each have their own Imbue Element variants at each level:

Tackle Lightning Surge first. The Spire of the Stars is encountered naturally during Chapter 4, making it the most accessible starting point. The puzzles here also serve as a good introduction to the Abyss puzzle mechanics.
Bring frost resistance to Pailune. Both Frost Mantle and Flame Strike are unlocked through the Spire of Ringing Truth in the frozen mountains. Without frost resistance gear or food, Stamina drains rapidly, and several platforming sections become extremely punishing.
Invest in Axiom Force upgrades early. An upgraded Axiom Force is useful in every single Spire challenge. The extended range opens shortcuts and simplifies many puzzle steps.
Unlock Focused Shot before visiting the Spire of the Stars. Two of the five puzzles (Vault of Vengeance and Courtyard of Precision) are impossible without this skill. Check the Skill Tree and invest in the Spirit branch.
Save Storm Veil for last. The Spire of Clockwork requires the key from Chapter 8, so there is no way to access it early. Focus on the other three elemental skills first and return to Storm Veil once you reach Blood Coronation in the main story.
Use elemental skills to complement Stamina-based combat. Elemental skills consume Spirit rather than Stamina. This means you can use them as offensive options even when Stamina is depleted from physical combos, maintaining pressure on enemies during prolonged fights.
Experiment with all four elements. Each element applies a different status effect. Lightning staggers groups, Frost freezes and can shatter low-health enemies, Flame deals the highest raw damage, and Wind provides tactical repositioning. Match your element to the situation.
Before heading to the Spire of Ringing Truth to unlock Frost and Flame, gather the following items and meet these requirements:
Requirement | Details | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
Found in a hidden cave southwest of the Scholastone Institute. Break the glowing rock wall with Focused Force Palm to reveal the cave. | Provides Ice Resistance Lv. 5, required to survive the long glides in freezing Abyss areas without your stamina draining too fast | |
Stamina (5+ levels) | Invest at least 5 points into Stamina through level-ups | Several sections require long glides across gaps. Without adequate stamina, you will fall short. |
Ranged Weapon | Bow with 50-60 poison arrows recommended | The Priscus the Ancient boss fight requires ranged attacks since the boss spends most of the fight airborne. |
Cuckoo Pot | Acquired during Chapter 4 as part of the story | Needed to seal and transport objects during puzzles. One Ether Rest puzzle requires storing a power core in the pot. |
Story Progress | Chapter 4 or later (Chapter 4-5 recommended) | The Spire area is designed for mid-game characters. You need access to the Cuckoo Pot and Nature abilities. |
Both Frost Mantle and Flame Strike are unlocked through a single chain of six Abyss sky islands, all accessed from the Spire of Ringing Truth in western Pailune. You must complete Frost first; the chain then continues to Flame. Both can be completed in one run.
Order | Island | Puzzle Type | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | Rotating cage, wind turbines, power core placement | ||
2 | Lightning cubes, batteries, laser redirection, conveyor belts | Abyss Artifact | |
3 | Extreme cold survival, torches, frozen chip defrosting in lava | Frost Mantle + Frost Lv. 1 | |
4 | Rotating laser spheres, chip socket placement | ||
5 | Ring activation with rotating chip sockets | ||
6 | Pillar rotation over lava, three-turn sequence | Flame Strike + Flame Lv. 1 |
After the Tree of Slumber, the island chain continues with additional sky islands that contain more puzzles and Abyss Artifact rewards, but no further elemental unlocks. These later islands lead to a story-related destination in the sky.
Elemental skills become accessible starting around the middle of Chapter 4. The first Spire you can reach is the Spire of Ringing Truth. Later elements require progressing further through the story, with some locked behind Chapter 8 and beyond.
Spire: Spire of Ringing Truth
Location: Western reaches of Pailune, between the Wayward Woods and the Upper Nas River.
Unlock path: After ascending the Spire of Ringing Truth, follow the Abyss pathway through Ether Rest and Frostbitten Paradise until you reach the Path of Trials. Completing the puzzle at the Path of Trials unlocks the Frost Mantle skill, which creates a protective frost barrier and can freeze enemies on contact.
Unlock path: Continue past the Path of Trials through the Sanctorum of Darkness and Loop of Life until you reach the Tree of Slumber. Solving the puzzle there unlocks Flame Strike for Kliff. Damiane learns Flame Rush and Oongka learns Flame Quake from the same unlock, so all three characters gain access to fire attacks.
Spire: Spire of the Stars
Unlock path: From the Spire of the Stars, progress through the Sanctorum of Insight, Secret Garden, and Vault of Vengeance until you reach the Courtyard of Precision. Completing the puzzle there unlocks Lightning Surge.
Unlock: Storm Veil is obtained through main story progression by learning Wind Level 1. This unlock comes naturally as you advance through the later chapters.
Additional Spire challenges become available after completing Chapter 8, when you receive a key to unlock the Spire of Clockwork in Demeniss. These later Spires contain advanced elemental unlocks and higher-tier puzzle challenges.
Several Abyss islands require long glides through freezing air. Without adequate ice resistance, the cold debuff drains your stamina rapidly and you will not reach the far side of these gaps. The Reindeer Cloak provides Ice Resistance Lv. 5, which is the minimum needed to complete all glide sections comfortably. The cloak is found in a hidden cave southwest of the Scholastone Institute. Use Focused Force Palm on the glowing rock wall to break it open, then open the chest inside.
If you prefer not to invest stamina points, bring stamina-restoring food as an alternative. However, 5 stamina levels is recommended since it makes the entire Abyss chain smoother and benefits general gameplay as well.
Visit the Spire of Ringing Truth in Pailune as soon as Chapter 4 begins. Frost Mantle is one of the strongest early elemental skills.
The puzzle challenges inside Spires often involve directing light beams, moving objects, and platforming. Bring patience and observe the environment carefully.
Elemental skills share the red section of the Skill Tree across all three characters. Unlocking an element makes it available for everyone.
Equip appropriate elemental resistance gear before entering Spire areas, since some are located in extreme temperature zones.
