Overview
Awakened Ludvig is the second mandatory boss encounter against Ludvig in Crimson Desert. This fight triggers immediately after depleting Ludvig's health in the first encounter, with no break or resupply opportunity. It takes place at Pailune Castle during the "Lonely Jackals" main quest in Chapter 7: Homecoming. Players continue controlling Kliff.
After his defeat in the initial fight, Ludvig refuses to go down. He draws on forbidden magic and consumes an imprisoned human, absorbing their life force to transform into a much larger, more powerful form. His body grows significantly, his lightning abilities intensify, and his fighting style shifts from the defensive blade work of the first phase to relentless, aggressive assault.
This is widely considered one of the harder fights in the main story. The combination of no resupply break from the first fight, Ludvig's aggressive new moveset, and the inability to knock him down makes this encounter a test of patience, dodge timing, and resource management. If you die here, you restart from the beginning of the first Ludvig fight and must beat both forms in a single run.

Attack Patterns
Awakened Ludvig abandons the twin-blade style of his first form in favor of massive fist attacks and large-scale lightning abilities. He is significantly larger and more aggressive, often chaining multiple attacks together. The only safe windows for counterattacks are during his recovery animations after completing an offensive sequence.
Attack | Description | How to Counter |
|---|---|---|
Lightning Punch | A single empowered fist strike with heavy forward momentum. Cannot be blocked and deals heavy damage on contact. | Dodge roll to the side. Do not attempt to block this; it will break through your guard. |
Lightning Bash | A heavy overhead slam using both fists. Creates a small shockwave on impact. Slower than Lightning Punch but covers more area. | Dodge sideways and circle behind him. The recovery after this slam is one of the best counterattack windows in the fight. |
Lightning Strike | Summons a linear bolt of lightning from the sky that strikes along the ground in a straight line toward the player. | Dodge perpendicular to the strike line. Moving sideways makes this trivial to avoid. |
Invoke Lightning Sword | Forms a massive sword out of concentrated electricity and performs two wide slashes. Each slash covers a huge arc and deals massive damage. | Maintain distance and circle away from the slash arcs. Rolling backward twice puts you safely out of range. |
Lightning Dash | Ludvig transforms into a bolt of lightning and teleports to the player's position, striking on arrival. Very fast with minimal telegraph. | Wait for the flash indicating his landing point, backstep, then immediately dash forward to attack him during recovery. |
Lightning Rays | Spawns three persistent beams of lightning that sweep across the arena. Contact with any ray deals continuous damage. | Dodge roll away from the beams and wait for them to dissipate. Do not try to attack during this move. |
Lightning Storm | A massive area-of-effect attack. Ludvig slams the ground, sending shockwaves outward while lightning bolts rain down across the arena. His most dangerous ability. | Run to the edge of the arena until the storm subsides. After it ends, Ludvig has a long recovery period where you can deal substantial damage. |
Electric Web Snare | Creates a crackling web of electricity on the ground. If the player steps into it, they become trapped and take continuous electrocution damage for several seconds. | Watch the ground for the web indicator and avoid stepping on it. If caught, mash the dodge button to break free faster. |
Combat Phases
Phase 1: Aggressive Assault
After the transformation cutscene, Awakened Ludvig opens with aggressive Lightning Punches and Lightning Bashes. He closes distance quickly with Lightning Dash and follows up with melee combos. His movement speed is high, but his individual attacks are slower and more telegraphed than his original form. The core pattern is to dodge his melee sequences, then attack during the brief recovery windows after each combo ends.
Despite his size, Ludvig actually moves somewhat slowly during his attacking animations in this first health bar. There are generous opportunities to use Blinding Flash to stun him. Chain Blinding Flash into Force Palm Push to lock him in a stun loop: Blinding Flash, attack, attack, Force Palm, attack, attack, then back off before his next sequence begins.
Phase 2: Lightning Onslaught
When his first health bar is depleted, Ludvig begins using his full ability set, including Lightning Storm, Lightning Rays, and Invoke Lightning Sword. He teleports more frequently with Lightning Dash and chains his abilities together with shorter gaps between them.
The biggest threats in this phase are Lightning Storm and Invoke Lightning Sword. Lightning Storm requires you to disengage completely and retreat to the arena's edge until the lightning stops falling. Invoke Lightning Sword has a deceptively wide hitbox; two backward rolls are the minimum safe distance. After either of these abilities, Ludvig stands still for roughly two to three seconds, long enough for a full Blinding Flash into Force Palm combo.
His Lightning Dash becomes much more frequent here. He will teleport, strike, then teleport again before you can land more than one or two hits. Patience is everything. Wait for the bigger recovery windows after Lightning Storm or Invoke Lightning Sword rather than chasing him between teleports.
Strategy
Damage Windows
Your only reliable openings for damage come after Ludvig finishes an offensive sequence. The best windows, ranked by safety, are: after Lightning Storm (longest recovery), after Lightning Bash (medium recovery, safe from behind), and after Invoke Lightning Sword (medium recovery, requires closing distance). Do not try to attack during Lightning Rays or while he is mid-teleport.
Stun Chaining
Blinding Flash and Force Palm are the two most valuable skills in this fight. Awakened Ludvig cannot be knocked down by grapple moves, so the stun effects from these abilities are your only way to create extended damage windows. The ideal chain is: Blinding Flash (stuns briefly), two light attacks, Force Palm Push (stuns again), two more light attacks, then disengage. This cycle can be repeated whenever Ludvig is in recovery.
Focus Mode
Activate Focus mode during Ludvig's recovery windows to slow down the action and regenerate Spirit. This gives you more precise control over your stun-chain timing and lets you build Spirit for additional skill uses. Focus is especially useful when Ludvig begins his Lightning Storm, since you can activate it as you retreat and then have full Spirit when the storm ends.
Healing
Eat food during Lightning Storm and Lightning Rays, both of which force you to disengage anyway. Do not try to heal during shorter windows. Your food supply may be partially depleted from the first Ludvig fight, so be conservative. Aim to eat only when below half health.
Rewards
Completing the Awakened Ludvig encounter grants the following rewards:
Reward | Details |
|---|---|
Hungering Fang Leather Cloak | Armor piece dropped upon defeating Awakened Ludvig. |
Hungering Fang Leather Boots | Armor piece dropped upon defeating Awakened Ludvig. |
Pailunese Contribution EXP | +2,000 contribution experience toward the Pailune region. |
After the fight, a cutscene plays where Duane arrives. Ludvig manages to escape despite his injuries, losing an arm in the process. He flees to the Kingshield Mountains in Demeniss, setting up the third and final encounter: One Armed Ludvig.
Tips
Treat this as a marathon, not a sprint. Reckless attacking leads to trading damage, and you cannot afford that with limited food and no resupply. Wait for confirmed openings.
Lightning Storm is your friend. It sounds counterintuitive, but Lightning Storm is the safest part of the fight. Retreat to the edge, eat food if needed, and prepare your next stun chain for when it ends.
Do not try to block. Most of Awakened Ludvig's attacks break through guards. Dodge rolling is the only reliable defensive option.
The stun chain is your primary damage tool. Blinding Flash into Force Palm into light attacks will account for the majority of your damage. Practice the timing on his first health bar where he is less aggressive.
Backstep, then dash forward after Lightning Dash. When Ludvig teleports to your position, backstep to avoid the impact, then immediately dash forward to hit him during landing recovery.
Death sends you back to the first Ludvig fight. Manage your resources carefully. If you arrive at this phase with fewer than 15 food items, you may want to intentionally reset and try the first fight more conservatively.
