Abyss Cores are equipment accessories in Crimson Desert that grant bonus stats when installed into weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has a set number of Abyss Core slots (typically three for one-handed weapons and five for two-handed weapons). Filling these slots with cores is the primary way to customize your combat stats beyond raw weapon damage and armor defense values.
The Abyss Core system becomes available during Chapter 5 of the main story, when Kliff is introduced to the first Witch NPC. Once unlocked, core management remains a central part of gear optimization through the end of the game.
Abyss Cores cannot be installed or removed by the player directly. Instead, you must visit a Witch, a specialized NPC who handles all core-related services. The first Witch, Elowen, is located in The Witchwoods, west of the Hernand Highlands. There are five known Witches across Pywel: Elowen (Witchwoods), Sylvia (north of Hernand), Lyselia (Serpent Marsh), Bari (Pailune), and Areciel (north of Tashkalp). Additional Witches are found in regions including the Serpent Marsh area south of Demeniss.

This list includes cores confirmed through Game8 and Fextralife community databases. Additional cores and higher tiers (II, III, and beyond) exist for many categories. The Fextralife wiki documents over 50 distinct core entries including all tiered variants. New cores may be added in future updates and DLC.
The "I" suffix indicates the base tier. Higher tiers (II, III, etc.) provide stronger versions of the same effect. Unique cores are rarer drops that provide distinct combat abilities rather than flat stat increases.
Different types of gear accept different core categories:
Weapons accept offensive cores (Destruction, Gale, Insight) and unique combat cores (Howling of Chaos, Piercing Bloom, etc.).
Body Armor accepts defensive cores (Aegis, Wall of Steel) and recovery cores (Breath of Life, Vitality).
Gloves and Boots accept utility cores (Haste, Composure) and lower-tier defensive cores.
Cloaks generally do not have Abyss Core slots. Their bonuses come from elemental resistances and special effects built into the cloak itself.
Cores can be obtained through several means:
Abyss Dungeons: The most consistent source. Abyss Dungeons contain core drops as both chest loot and boss rewards.
Boss Drops: Certain overworld bosses and mini-bosses drop unique cores on defeat.
Witch Vendors: Each Witch sells a selection of basic core recipes. Craft them using gathered materials.
Exploration: Some cores are hidden in loot caches scattered across the world, particularly in hard-to-reach locations.
Quest Rewards: Specific side quests reward Abyss Cores upon completion.
Equipping Abyss Cores is a multi-step process that requires visiting Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom NPC introduced during the Chapter 5 questline ("Exposed Plot"). The process works as follows:
Create sockets: Speak to Elowen and select the "Create Socket" option. Choose the piece of equipment you want to modify. Adding a socket costs silver, and the price increases each time you add another socket to the same item.
Embed cores: Once your gear has at least one open socket, select the "Embed" option from Elowen's menu. Choose the Abyss Core you want to insert and the target socket. The core's bonus stat applies immediately.
Extract cores (optional): If you want to remove an embedded core to transfer it to different equipment, use the "Extract" option. Extraction is free, so you can swap cores between gear sets without penalty.
Cloaks and accessories cannot be fitted with Abyss Core sockets. Only weapons, armor pieces (head, body, gloves, boots), and off-hand items (shields) support socketing.
Each equipment type has a maximum number of Abyss Core sockets. Weapons generally allow more sockets than armor, letting you stack offensive cores on your main weapon for maximum damage output.

Two-handed and ranged weapons can hold up to 5 cores each, making them the best candidates for stacking a single stat like Destruction or Gale. Armor pieces have fewer slots, so prioritize defensive cores (Wall of Steel, Aegis) in those positions.
Stack Destruction and Gale cores on your weapon to maximize damage output and attack speed. Pair with a two-handed weapon that already has a high base Attack stat. Fill armor slots with Breath of Life for passive health recovery to sustain through longer fights.
Focus on Wall of Steel and Aegis cores in every armor slot. Use a one-handed weapon with a shield for blocking, and slot the weapon with Vitality or Composure cores for regeneration between blocks. Plate armor amplifies this approach since its higher base defense stacks with the damage reduction from cores.
Use Insight cores on your weapon alongside a weapon that already grants Critical Hit Chance (such as the Ceremonial Warhammer or Lambert Axe). Fill remaining weapon slots with Destruction cores to ensure crits deal high total damage.
Equip Haste cores in boot and glove slots, wear cloth armor for lighter stamina consumption, and slot Gale cores on your weapon for faster attacks. This setup suits players who prefer hit-and-run tactics and rely on dodging rather than trading hits.
Adding sockets through the Witch increases the cost each time. A weapon that starts with three slots will cost progressively more to reach four, five, or higher. Plan your socket additions around your most-used equipment rather than spreading the investment across multiple weapons.
Removing cores is free, so feel free to swap cores between gear sets as needed. Keep a stock of basic offensive and defensive cores so you can reconfigure your loadout before difficult encounters.

Remember that cores require open sockets on your equipment. Visit a Witch NPC and select "Create Socket" to add slots before attempting to install cores. Socket creation costs scale with the number of existing slots on each piece.
Visit the Witch as soon as she becomes available in Chapter 5. Even basic cores like Destruction I and Aegis I make a noticeable difference.
Do not sell Abyss Cores. They are far more valuable installed in equipment than the silver you get from vendors.
