Overview
Chatting with Pokemon is a core interaction in Pokemon Pokopia. There are three primary ways to communicate with your Pokemon: approaching them and pressing A, responding when they approach you with a speech bubble, and witnessing unique conversations between related species. Most interactions with Pokemon increase their Comfort Level, regardless of the outcome.
Method 1: Press A to Talk
The simplest way to talk to a Pokemon is to walk up to it and press A. This opens the interaction menu where you can:
Check the Pokemon's current comfort level and mood.
Gift the Pokemon an item. See Cooking and Recipes and Food and Flavors for preferred gifts.
Ask the Pokemon to follow you to another location.
View the Pokemon's specialty information.
You can talk to any Pokemon at any time using this method, as long as it is not currently performing a task or sleeping.
Method 2: Respond to Speech Bubbles
Pokemon will occasionally approach you with a speech bubble above their heads. There are two types of speech bubble interactions, distinguished by whether a sound effect plays:
Speech Bubble Type | Indicator | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
Silent (no sound effect) | Speech bubble appears without audio cue | The Pokemon shows gratitude or shares a simple reaction. Comfort level increases. |
Excited (with sound effect and yellow text) | Speech bubble with audio cue and yellow highlighted text | The Pokemon is excited. It may gift you an item, or challenge you to a mini-game like Quiz or Look That Way. |
Mini-Games from Speech Bubbles
When a Pokemon with an excited speech bubble approaches, it may start one of two mini-games:
Mini-Game | How to Play |
|---|---|
Quiz | The Pokemon asks a question about itself or the game world. Answer correctly to earn a reward and a comfort boost. |
Look That Way | A quick-reaction game. The Pokemon points in a direction and you must look the opposite way to win. |
Both mini-games increase the Pokemon's comfort level regardless of whether you win or lose. Winning gives a bigger comfort boost and may yield an item reward.
Method 3: Unique Conversations
In some instances, you will find Pokemon interacting and conversing with each other. When this happens, the interaction prompt changes from the standard "Talk" to "What's this about?" instead. Selecting this option lets you observe the conversation between the two Pokemon.
Unique conversations usually occur between Pokemon in the same evolutionary line or Pokemon that are known to have interactions in the wild. For example, a Pikachu and Raichu living in the same area might have a unique conversation about their shared history.
Tip: Keep related Pokemon in the same area if you want to witness their unique conversations. Housing evolutionary families together or Pokemon from the same habitat increases the chances of these special interactions triggering.
Comfort Level and Chatting
Every chat interaction contributes to a Pokemon's Comfort Level. Higher comfort levels unlock new behaviors and bonuses:
Pokemon with high comfort are more likely to approach you with excited speech bubbles.
High-comfort Pokemon gift better items when they initiate conversations.
Maxing out comfort is required for certain requests and story progression.
Tips
Talk to every Pokemon with a speech bubble you see. Even silent interactions increase comfort level, and excited ones can yield free items.
Pay attention to the sound effect. A speech bubble with a sound effect and yellow text means the Pokemon is excited and may start a mini-game or give you a gift.
House related Pokemon together (same evolution line, same type, or known companions) to trigger unique conversations more often.
There is no downside to losing a Quiz or Look That Way game. You still gain comfort, so always participate when a Pokemon challenges you.
Keep visiting Pokemon regularly. Frequent interaction is the fastest way to raise comfort levels across your entire island.
