The Short-Haired Kitten is a tameable cat companion in Crimson Desert. Found roaming settlements throughout the Pywel region, this small feline can be registered as a pet once the player builds enough trust with it. Short-Haired Kittens are one of several cat breeds available in the game and are recognized by their compact size and sleek, close-cropped fur.
Like all cats in Crimson Desert, the Short-Haired Kitten must be picked up and carried before the player can pet it. Its favorite food is the Small Gudgeon, a small freshwater fish that grants +35 trust per feeding. Once registered, the kitten follows the player during exploration and automatically collects loot from defeated enemies and harvested resources.

The Short-Haired Kitten comes in six different coat color variations. Each time the player visits a settlement, the game can spawn a kitten with a different appearance. Taming a Short-Haired Kitten follows the standard pet taming process used for all cats in Crimson Desert. The player must raise the kitten's trust from 0 to 100 through a combination of petting and feeding. Because of the daily cap on trust-building actions, the process takes a minimum of two in-game days.
Locate the kitten. Short-Haired Kittens can be found roaming settlements across Pywel. Look near residential areas, market squares, and along streets in towns and cities. Kittens may appear at different times of day, so check back if one is not visible on your first pass.
Pick up the kitten. Approach the kitten and hold the interaction button to pick it up. Unlike dogs, cats must be carried before you can pet them.
Pet it five times. While holding the kitten, press the pet button five times. Each pet grants +5 trust, bringing the total to 25. This is the daily petting cap.
Feed the kitten. You can feed the kitten up to three times per in-game day. Small Gudgeon, the kitten's favorite food, grants +35 trust per feed. However, the daily feeding cap of +30 total means you can only feed the kitten three standard items at +10 each for Day 1 (after reaching the petting cap), or use one Small Gudgeon feed for +35 followed by lesser foods. The most efficient approach is to feed three items worth +10 trust each (such as Dried Fish, regular Fish, Bird Meat, Fruit, or Milk), bringing the total from 25 to 55.
Wait for the daily reset. At 55 trust, the daily cap has been reached. Wait until midnight (the start of a new in-game day) before continuing. Keep the kitten indoors or hold it to prevent it from wandering off.
Pet it five more times. After midnight, the daily counters reset. Pet the kitten five times for +25 trust, bringing the total from 55 to 80.
Feed two more items. Feed the kitten two items at +10 trust each, bringing the total from 80 to 100. Alternatively, feeding one Small Gudgeon (+35) will push the trust well past 100.
Register the kitten. At 100 trust, a new interaction prompt appears. Put the kitten down and hold Square (PlayStation) or E (PC) to select "Take In." The Short-Haired Kitten is now permanently registered as your pet.
Action | Trust Gained | Running Total | Day |
|---|---|---|---|
Pet x5 | +25 | 25 | Day 1 |
Feed x3 (standard items) | +30 | 55 | Day 1 |
(Daily cap reached) | 55 | Day 1 | |
Pet x5 (after midnight) | +25 | 80 | Day 2 |
Feed x2 (standard items) | +20 | 100 | Day 2 |
Take In | 100 (Registered) | Day 2 |
The Short-Haired Kitten accepts a wide range of food items to build trust. Its favorite food, Small Gudgeon, provides the highest trust gain among standard items at +35 per feeding. Legendary Fish provide +100 trust, enough to instantly max out the trust meter when combined with petting. Cooked dishes from the Field Iron Griddle and Field Cooking Pot each grant +20 trust, while raw ingredients like fish, bird meat, fruit, and dairy products all grant +10 trust per feeding.
Item Category | Trust Value | Examples |
|---|---|---|
Small Gudgeon (Favorite) | +35 | Small Gudgeon |
Legendary Fish | +100 | Golden Tench, Coelacanth, Golden Carp, Clockwork Fish, Golden Coelacanth, Hexe Earthen Fish |
Field Iron Griddle Dishes | +20 | Grilled Meat, Grilled Fish, Grilled Vegetables, Grilled Fruit, Toasted Grains, Smoked Eggs, Meat Skewers, Fish Skewers, and their Hearty/Satisfying/Filling variants |
+20 | Clear Soup, Longhorn Soup, Fish Porridge, Vegetable Porridge, Fruit Punch, Meat Soup, Braised Ribs, Steamed Eggs, Seafood Soup, and their variants | |
+10 | Dried Fish | |
Fish | +10 | Salmon, Trout, Carp, Catfish, Mackerel, Bass, Perch, Sturgeon, and many more |
+10 | Lean Bird Meat, Bird Meat | |
Fruit | +10 | Apple, Grape, Orange, Peach, Tomato, Blueberry, Strawberry, Pear, and more |
Dairy Products | +10 |
For the most efficient taming, use Small Gudgeon when available. If you do not have Small Gudgeon, any common fish, fruit, or dairy product will work at +10 trust per feed. Cooked dishes from the Field Iron Griddle or Field Cooking Pot offer a good middle ground at +20 trust and can be prepared at campsites using gathered ingredients.
Short-Haired Kittens can be outfitted with pet armor to increase their defensive stats and change their appearance. Pet equipment is purchased from Pets - Tailor's Shops, which are typically run by the Shai in major settlements. Equipment is divided into two slots: a helm and an outfit.
Slot | Type | |
|---|---|---|
Helm | Pet Helm | |
Outfit | Pet Outfit | |
Helm | Pet Helm | |
Outfit | Pet Outfit | |
Helm | Pet Helm | |
Outfit | Pet Outfit |
To equip armor on your kitten, open the Inventory menu, navigate to the Pets section, select the Short-Haired Kitten, and then choose the piece of armor you want to equip. Pet armor provides defensive benefits that reduce the chance of your kitten being injured during combat encounters.
Once registered, the Short-Haired Kitten provides the same set of passive benefits as all other pet breeds in Crimson Desert. Pets do not have unique abilities per breed; their utility is shared across all cats and dogs.
Ability | Description |
|---|---|
Auto-Loot (Combat) | Automatically picks up loot dropped by defeated enemies, including equipment, materials, and consumables. |
Resource Pickup (Harvesting) | Collects dropped resources when the player mines ores, chops trees, or gathers herbs. |
Destructible Object Pickup | Gathers items from breakable objects and environmental containers. |
Exploration Companion | Follows the player across all regions of Pywel while summoned. |
Pets are invulnerable during combat and cannot be targeted by enemies. However, they can sustain injuries over time. An injured pet moves slowly and cannot run until healed. Use Healing Force Palm to restore your pet's health when this happens.
Craft Companionship enchants on Abyss gear to increase the rate at which you gain trust with pets. This reduces the number of days needed to tame a kitten.
The Solidarity enchant increases trust gain with all NPCs and animals, not just pets. If you plan to tame multiple companions, Solidarity is the better long-term investment.
Small Gudgeon can be caught while fishing in freshwater rivers and ponds across Pywel. Keep a few in your inventory whenever you plan to visit settlements.
If the kitten is not present at a settlement, leave the area and return to trigger a respawn. Different variants may appear each time, so repeat this process if you want a specific coat color.
Carry the kitten indoors or hold it while waiting for the daily reset. Putting it down in an open area risks the kitten wandering away or despawning.
You can register up to 30 pets total, but only one can be actively summoned at a time. Manage your pets through the Inventory menu.
