Hidden Memories are a core exploration and narrative mechanic in Crimson Desert that allows players to witness events from the past by discovering and replaying stored Memory Fragments. The system revolves around two key items: the Visione Helm, an ancient helmet that acts as a gateway to archived memories, and the Lantern, which detects nearby fragments hidden throughout the world. Together, these tools form part of a broader technology known as the Physiome, a device designed to capture real-world experiences and replay them vividly. Memory Fragments are scattered across the continent of Pywel, often found in locations that witnessed strong emotions or significant historical events, such as grave sites, burned buildings, ancient ruins, and places of healing.
Obtaining the Visione Helm
The Visione Helm is acquired during Chapter 2 of the main story, in the sub-chapter titled Unexpected Gift. The quest Where the Light Leads sends players to the Lioncrest Watchtower in the Hernand region, where the helm waits on the top floor among a cache of treasure.
Lioncrest Watchtower Walkthrough
Defeat the bandits in the watchtower courtyard. Roughly six to seven kills are needed before the remaining enemies flee. Prioritize archers first.
Burn the vine-covered door. Equip your bow, hold an arrow near a lit torch to ignite it, and fire the flaming arrow at the vines blocking the entrance to burn them away.
Climb the tower carefully. As you ascend the staircase, watch for visible trap mechanisms along the path. Equip your bow and shoot each trap from a safe distance to disable it before proceeding.
Collect the Visione Helm from the corner of the top floor. Walk up to the golden helmet and hold the interact button to pick it up. A phantom figure will materialize, refer to the helmet as a "visione," offer a cryptic explanation, and then vanish.
Picking up the Visione automatically triggers the next main quest, Memory Fragment (the 15th main mission), which serves as a tutorial for reading your first stored memory.
The Memory Fragment Quest
The Memory Fragment quest is the introductory tutorial for the Hidden Memories system. After collecting the Visione at the top of the Lioncrest Watchtower, the game walks you through accessing and viewing your first memory. The quest has two objectives:
Check the suspicious helm among the treasure at the top of the watchtower.
Read the memory contained in the helm. Open the Visione's interface, navigate to the Delysia section, scroll down, and select the memory titled "Visione" to view it.
After this quest, the Visione Helm becomes a permanent part of your inventory and can be used throughout the rest of the game.
How to Discover Memory Fragments
Memory Fragments are hidden throughout Pywel and must be detected before they can be viewed. Your Lantern is the primary tool for finding them. When you are near a Memory Fragment, the lantern begins pulsing with a distinctive blue glow. This serves as the signal to start searching the area.
Discovery Process
Watch for the blue glow. While exploring, keep an eye on your lantern. When it starts pulsing with a blue light, a Memory Fragment is somewhere nearby.
Equip and raise your lantern. Open the equipment wheel (hold Left on the D-Pad, or press F2 on keyboard), select the lantern, and hold it up with LB/L1/CTRL.
Scan for blue ghosts. Move slowly around the area while holding the lantern aloft. Look for ghostly blue shapes (memory echoes) that appear in the environment.
Fill the Learning in Progress bar. When you are facing the correct spot, a "Learning in Progress" bar appears on the left side of the screen. Hold your lantern steady and aim at the blue ghosts until the bar fills completely.
Confirm the prompt. Once learning is complete, a prompt appears on the right side of the screen allowing you to read the fragment. Confirming this plays the memory, showing what happened in that location, including the people present and the conversations they were having.
Where to Find Memory Fragments
Memory Fragments can appear just about anywhere in the world of Pywel. However, they are especially common in locations that experienced strong emotions or historically significant events. Keep your lantern at the ready when exploring the following types of areas:
Ruins and ancient structures (watchtowers, collapsed buildings, old fortifications)
Grave sites and memorials
Burned or destroyed buildings
Places of healing (such as the St. Halssius House of Healing)
Bandit camps and battlefields (locations tied to quests like Trial After Trial)
Caves and underground areas (locations like the cave in Secrets Hidden in the Dark)
Towns and settlements with historical significance
As a general rule, if an area feels like it has a story to tell, hold up your lantern and check. Many fragments are found off the beaten path and reward thorough exploration.
How to View and Replay Memories
Once you have discovered a Memory Fragment, it is permanently stored and can be replayed at any time from anywhere in the game world. There are three methods to access your collected memories.
Method 1: Equipment Wheel (Fastest)
Open the equipment wheel by holding Left on the D-Pad.
Switch to the Armor panel using L1/R1 (or the keyboard equivalent).
Highlight the Visione headwear.
Press the interact button (A/X/Spacebar) and select "Play" from the action menu.
Browse your memory list, select the desired memory, and confirm.
Method 2: Inventory
Open your inventory.
Locate the Visione Helm.
Hold the interact button (do not just press it) to open the secondary menu.
Select "Play" to open the memory list.
Choose a memory and confirm your selection.
Method 3: Quick Access
When a viewable memory is nearby, the icon on the right side of the screen changes to a mirror symbol.
Hold the Options button (or the equivalent on your platform).
Select the bottom icon on the right side to view the fragment directly.
This quick access method is the most convenient for quest-related memories and is the recommended approach during gameplay.
Access Methods Comparison
Method | How to Open | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Equipment Wheel | D-Pad Left > Armor > Visione > Play | Quick replay from anywhere | Fastest method for replaying old memories |
Inventory | Inventory > Visione > Hold interact > Play | Browsing full collection | New memories are marked for easy identification |
Quick Access | Hold Options > bottom-right icon | Viewing a newly discovered memory | Only available when a fragment is nearby or just learned |
Knowledge Menu | Menu > Others > Knowledge > Memory Fragments | Reviewing your collection | Reference list only; cannot replay memories from here |
Quest-Related Memory Fragments
Several main quests and side quests require you to discover and read specific Memory Fragments as part of their objectives. In these cases, the game guides you to the correct area, and the lantern's blue pulse indicates where to search. Below are notable quests that involve the Memory Fragment mechanic.
Quest | Chapter | Memory Fragment | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
Chapter 2 (Unexpected Gift) | Visione | Obtain the Visione Helm at Lioncrest Watchtower | |
Memory Fragment | Chapter 2 (Unexpected Gift) | Visione (Delysia) | Tutorial quest; read the first stored memory in the Delysia section |
Chapter 2 (Hernand in Chaos) | The Missing Cow | Find the fragment in a bandit camp after clearing enemies; help Bremer recover stolen cattle | |
Secrets Hidden in the Dark | Chapter 2 (Hernand in Chaos) | Lair of the Animal Thieves | Discover a memory fragment inside a cave holding stolen animals |
Late game | Varies | Investigate Duke Caliburn's old office; requires returning to the original location to trigger quest-specific prompts |
Important: For certain quest-related memories (such as Blood Coronation), you must return to the original location where the memory was first discovered in order to trigger the necessary quest-specific interaction prompts. Simply replaying the memory from your inventory will not advance the quest objective.
The Physiome
The Visione Helm is part of a broader ancient technology known as the Physiome. This system was designed to capture real-world experiences and replay them vividly, allowing the user to witness events as if they were physically present at the time they occurred. Rather than functioning as standard wearable gear, the Visione serves as a gateway to an archive of stored memories recorded by the Physiome.
The exact origins and creators of the Physiome remain shrouded in mystery, but the technology plays an important role in the deeper narrative of Crimson Desert. The game hints that prolonged use of the Physiome may blur the line between memory and reality, adding a layer of psychological depth to the story. As players collect more Memory Fragments throughout their journey, the Physiome's significance to the overall plot becomes increasingly clear.
Viewing Your Collection in the Knowledge Menu
All collected Memory Fragments are cataloged in the Knowledge section of your menu. To access this list, navigate to Menu > Others > Knowledge > Memory Fragments. This provides a reference list of every memory you have discovered so far. Note that this menu is for reference only; you cannot replay memories directly from the Knowledge screen. To replay a memory, use one of the three methods described above (Equipment Wheel, Inventory, or Quick Access).
Tips and Tricks
Keep your lantern out while exploring. The blue pulse is easy to miss if your lantern is stowed. Holding it up as you enter new areas ensures you catch nearby fragments.
Check emotionally significant locations. Memory Fragments tend to cluster in places tied to strong emotions or important events: battlefields, graveyards, ruins, shrines, and locations with historical significance.
The memory list can be very long. As you progress through the game, the list of stored memories grows to potentially hundreds of entries. Scroll carefully when looking for a specific memory, and take note that new entries are marked in the Inventory method.
Quest memories may require you to be at the location. If a quest asks you to "read" a memory fragment, replaying it from your inventory may not satisfy the objective. Return to the original discovery location where the interaction prompts appear at the bottom of the screen.
Use the quick access method during quests. When the right-side icon changes to a mirror symbol, hold the Options button and select the bottom-right icon for the fastest way to view a quest-required memory.
Bandits camps often contain fragments. After clearing an enemy camp, take a moment to check for blue lantern pulses before moving on. Quests like Trial After Trial demonstrate this pattern.
Use Axiom powers in caves. Some cave areas containing Memory Fragments also have environmental hazards like poison-filled burners. Axiom abilities can help you navigate these safely and reach the fragment.
