Overview
If you have been exploring Pywel and noticed that your Lantern suddenly starts pulsing with a soft blue light, you are not imagining things. The blue glow is a built-in detection mechanic that tells you a Memory Fragment is somewhere nearby. Memory Fragments are ghostly recordings of past events scattered around the world, and the lantern is your primary tool for finding them.
What Causes the Blue Glow?
The lantern reacts whenever you are within range of a hidden Memory Fragment. The closer you get to the fragment, the more intense the pulsing becomes. Think of it like a proximity detector: a faint flicker means the fragment is in the general area, while a strong, steady glow means you are standing right on top of it.
This mechanic is separate from normal illumination. Your lantern works as a standard light source in caves and at night, but the blue pulse only appears when a Memory Fragment is present.
How to Equip and Activate the Lantern
Open the equipment radial menu by holding Left on the D-Pad (controller) or the corresponding key on keyboard.
Select the Lantern from the radial wheel and press the confirm button (A on Xbox, X on PlayStation).
Toggle it On by choosing "Turn On" in the outer menu that appears. This ensures the lantern is active while you hold it.
Hold the Lantern out by pressing and holding LB (Xbox), L1 (PlayStation), or Ctrl (keyboard). The lantern stays raised as long as you hold the button.
You receive your first lantern during the Unknown Space quest in the Dead of Night prologue. Additional lanterns can be purchased from any Provisioner's Shop for 10 Copper each. They are marked by bottle icons on the map.
Reading Memory Fragments with the Visione
Once the blue glow tells you a fragment is nearby, keep the lantern raised and slowly scan the environment. You are looking for blueish-white blobs floating in the air. Point the lantern directly at them and hold your aim. A progress bar labeled "Leaning in Progress" will appear in the top-left corner of the screen.
When the bar fills completely, the game automatically equips the Visione (the gold helmet). The screen turns blue and a short memory scene plays out, showing you a recording of past events tied to that location. These memories often provide quest clues, lore details, and hints about hidden treasures.
Rewatching Collected Memories
You can revisit any memory you have already collected. Open your inventory, equip the Visione, and activate it. This opens a list of every Memory Fragment you have gathered. You can replay any of them from anywhere in the world, though the initial discovery must happen at the fragment's specific location.
Tips for Finding Memory Fragments
Keep your lantern on while exploring. The blue glow is easy to miss if the lantern is stowed. Get into the habit of holding it out when entering new areas, especially ruins, caves, and old battlefields.
Check near quest markers. Many main story and side quest locations have Memory Fragments hidden just off the beaten path.
Use Blinding Flash for a wider sweep. Activate Blinding Flash (Lantern button + Light Attack) to emit a burst of light. Nearby points of interest, including fragments, will briefly flash blue.
Look up and around corners. Fragments can spawn at varying heights. If the glow is strong but you cannot see anything at eye level, look higher or check behind obstacles.
Blue Glow vs. Orange Glow
The lantern can also produce an orange glow when pointed at general points of interest, such as trails, clues, and puzzle elements. The orange glow helps solve environmental puzzles, while the blue glow is exclusively for Memory Fragments. If you see orange, you are near a clue or interactive object. If you see blue, a Memory Fragment is waiting to be read.
