Greymane Camp at Howling Hill serves as the player's home base in Crimson Desert. After the ambush by the Black Bears, Kliff and the remaining Greymanes regroup here to rebuild their mercenary company. The camp starts small but expands significantly as you recruit scattered Greymane members and invest resources into construction. Eventually, the camp becomes a comprehensive hub with crafting stations, merchants, a farm, a ranch, a personal house, and a full trading operation.
Camp expansion is unlocked after completing the "A Gentle Touch" main quest in Chapter 3. Once this quest is finished, the full construction system becomes available and you can begin building new facilities and upgrading existing ones.
The following facilities can be built or unlocked at Greymane Camp. Each facility serves a specific purpose and is managed by a dedicated NPC.
Facility | NPC | Function | Unlock Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
Cook dishes using gathered ingredients. Purchase ingredients and limited-stock prepared meals (refreshed daily). Learn and repeat recipes. | Complete "A Rumor at Glenbright Farm" quest | ||
Buy and sell gear (limited stock). Sells ammunition and refinement items. Enables weapon and armor upgrades. | Camp expansion through main story progression | ||
N/A (crafting station) | Brew elixirs, potions, and combat consumables at a cauldron. Requires recipes and gathered ingredients. | Build using wood (Logging) and ore (Mining); main story quest "Restore the Greymane Camp" | |
Dye Station | Craft and apply dyes for armor customization. Oliver sells regional dye colors. | Unlocked through the Greymane faction questline (life skills quest chain) | |
Wagon Shop | Brice (Wagonmaster) | Build wagons for trade goods transport. Manage wagon loadouts and cargo. | Complete "Rumor in Glenbright Farm" to recruit Brice |
Carl (Provisioner) | Convert provisions into packaged trade goods. Manage lost item retrieval and camp donations. Supply Chest holds up to 230 slots. | Recruit Carl through camp expansion | |
Farm | N/A | Grow crops for cooking ingredients. Farm expansion increases crop variety and yield per harvest cycle. | Camp upgrades through Greymane questline |
Ranch | N/A | Raise animals and livestock for ingredients and income. Ranch expansion allows more animal types and increased production. | Camp upgrades through Greymane questline |
Freesword Dispatch | Deploy comrades on missions across regions for resources, currency, and trade goods. Also reduces enemy encounters in blockaded regions. | Recruit Ross through camp expansion | |
Rest Area (Bed) | N/A | Rest at camp to pass the time. Consecutive resting is not allowed. | Available from Chapter 3 onward |
Personal House | N/A | Build and furnish a personal home within the camp. Serves as a resting place and showcase of progress. |
Building and upgrading camp facilities requires both raw materials and currency. Resources flow into the camp through three main channels:
Direct gathering: Chop trees for wood, mine ore deposits, and collect materials from the world through life skills.
Liberation missions: Free territories from enemy control to unlock new resource access points.
Freesword Dispatch: Send comrades on passive resource-collection missions through Ross. This provides a steady supply of timber, ore, currency, and trade goods over time.
Always maintain active dispatch missions for continuous resource accumulation. The Freesword Dispatch system is one of the best ways to keep your resource stockpile healthy without dedicating time to manual gathering.
Each camp facility is tied to a specific NPC who must be recruited before their service becomes available. The following NPCs play critical roles at Greymane Camp:
NPC | Role | How to Recruit |
|---|---|---|
Blacksmith | Recruited through main story progression and camp expansion | |
Wagonmaster | Complete "Rumor in Glenbright Farm" quest | |
Camp Provisioner / Trading | Recruited through camp expansion quests | |
Dispatch Commander | Recruited through camp expansion; manages Freesword missions | |
Engineer | Complete "A Rumor in St. Halssius" quest; provides Engineering skill for wagon building | |
Dye Merchant | Joins after progressing the Greymane faction questline at Howling Hill |
While you can prioritize construction in any order, the following build order offers the best return on investment:
1. Alchemy Lab: Provides access to a cauldron for brewing Palmar Pills (revival items) and combat elixirs. This is the highest-priority facility because Palmar Pills are essential for surviving boss fights.
2. Cooking Station: Unlocked through the Glenbright Farm quest. Cooking produces food that restores health, spirit, and stamina during combat.
3. Blacksmith: Enables gear purchasing, selling, and refinement. Critical for upgrading weapons and armor.
4. Farm and Ranch: Once operational, the farm and ranch provide a self-sustaining supply of cooking ingredients and trade goods.
5. Wagon Shop: Requires recruiting Brice and an Engineering worker. Once built, the wagon opens up highly profitable trading routes.
6. Dye Station: Cosmetic-only facility for coloring armor and equipment. Lower priority but adds customization options. See the All Dyes List for available colors.
7. Personal House: Build once other facilities are complete. Provides a rest point and cosmetic furnishing options.
Beyond the facilities unlocked through comrade recruitment, Greymane Camp hides two sets of crafting conveniences that many players miss for dozens of hours.
A grindstone and an anvil sit tucked behind the camp's main tent, and they appear to be present from the moment your camp first unlocks in Chapter 3. Because they are placed out of the natural walking path, a large portion of the community misses them entirely and spends the early chapters traveling back to town just to reinforce gear before boss fights. Walk around the back of the main tent and you will find both stations side by side, ready to use with no silver or material cost.
Make a habit of visiting this hidden corner before any faction quest boss or stronghold liberation run. Both stations give a temporary reinforcement buff to your currently equipped weapon (grindstone) and armor (anvil), and they are completely free.
The camp's personal home doubles as a build-mode workshop. Step inside the home to enter the placement UI, then you can drop a Cauldron as a functional piece of furniture. Once placed, you can craft every potion and pill recipe at camp without ever traveling back to a witch cauldron in town.
Purchase the cauldron from the vendor at the Furniture Shop in Hernand. After you own the item, fast travel to your camp, walk into your home to trigger build mode, then select the cauldron from the installable list and place it. This is arguably the most useful single piece of home furniture in the game, because it collapses the crafting loop for refined Palmer Pills and other consumables into a single camp visit. The pink flowers growing wild right outside your camp also feed back into endless regular Palmer Pill production.
A Cooking Grill can be placed inside your camp home using the exact same build mode flow as the cauldron. It is less essential than the cauldron because the existing camp cook handles most basic meals, but the grill unlocks access to a few more advanced recipes that the camp kitchen does not cover. Combining both stations turns the home into a fully self-contained crafting hub.
Tip: most witches in the open world sit next to a convenient fast travel point, so the time savings from the home cauldron are modest for players who fast travel freely. The real value is for players who prefer to stay at camp between expeditions, and the pink flowers directly outside camp make it a zero-travel farming loop for standard Palmer Pills.
Always keep Freesword Dispatch missions active through Ross for passive resource accumulation.
Recruit new Greymanes as soon as possible. Each new member expands your available workforce and may unlock new camp features.
Complete the Timberturner Wainwright missions to unlock and upgrade the wagon for trading.
The Cook and Quartermaster facilities unlock simultaneously after completing "A Rumor at Glenbright Farm."
Camp construction follows the same physical building mechanics as other structures. You gather materials and physically construct the building.
Donate unwanted items to Carl for camp growth rather than selling them at a loss.
The Supply Chest at camp holds up to 230 slots of uncollected loot, so check it regularly.
Building up the camp is tied to one of the best quest lines in the game. Do not skip the Greymane side quests.
