Tainted Bile is an endgame Cursed Swamps resource in Windrose, dropped exclusively from Plague Crocodiles. It is a required ingredient for Ingot Arborum at the Enchanting Table (1 Mire Metal Ingot + 2 Essence Arborum + 1 Tainted Bile) and for several other endgame alchemical and crafting recipes. Plan farming runs around the deep Cursed Swamps where Plague Crocodiles spawn most densely.

Travel to the deep Cursed Swamps where Plague Crocodile density is highest
Drop a Fast Travel Bell at a safe entry point so you can warp out for resupply between fights
Bring Pierce or Crude damage weapons; Plague Crocodiles resist Slash damage
Stockpile Healing Potion (Great) and Pain Relief Elixir; the plague DoT compounds quickly
Co-op makes farming significantly faster and safer
Stockpile alongside Essence Arborum since both are required for the Ingot Arborum recipe
Tainted Bile is the corrupted digestive fluid of plague-affected crocodiles. Its alchemical properties are directly tied to the supernatural plague spreading through the Cursed Swamps. The fact that Tainted Bile is required for the Enchanting Table's endgame recipes implies that the player must literally weaponize the plague against itself: refining the corruption into an alchemical reagent powerful enough to enchant weapons against the supernatural threats of the late game.
Whether the plague originated with the High Priestess, with some older corruption tied to Columbus's Book of Prophecies, or with some other source, is part of the Cursed Swamps' unfolding mystery. The fact that the bile is usable as a constructive ingredient (rather than purely as a hazard) reflects the game's broader theme: in Windrose, the line between natural and supernatural, healthy and corrupted, is something the player negotiates rather than rejects outright.
Hotfix 0.10.0.4.268 on April 30, 2026 improved Tainted Bile drop rates from late-game enemies. Plague Crocodiles, the primary Cursed Swamps source, return more reliably and more consistently to the listed 2 per kill baseline rather than rolling occasional empty drops. The site-clear math in the farming sections above now holds more predictably across visits.
No recipe consumption rate changed. The change affects how many bile each farming lap delivers, not how many bile each Ingot Arborum costs.
Plague Crocodile - the source enemy
Ingot Arborum - the primary recipe consumer
Essence Arborum - the paired Cursed Swamps endgame resource
Enchanting Table - the crafting station that uses Tainted Bile
Cursed Swamps - the source biome
Inside the Cursed Swamps, Plague Crocodile spawns cluster around specific points of interest on the south side of the map. Each marked POI typically hosts two Plague Crocodiles at once, so a single site-clear yields two rolls at the 1 to 2 bile drop range without requiring the player to chase individual spawns across the wider biome.
These POIs are also frequently home to other swamp creatures that patrol the surrounding approach, so survival during the actual Crocodile fight depends on clearing or kiting the ambient adds first rather than engaging the Crocodile directly. Dropping a Fast Travel Bell at the POI entrance gives a safe reset point for repeat runs.
Plague crocodiles cluster at a handful of fixed points of interest that reliably host one or more spawns per reset, which makes them the practical endpoints of any dedicated bile run rather than the wandering swamp patrols. Each site listed here has been confirmed in current community data as a persistent plague-crocodile spawn location.
Sacrificial altars around the High Priestess chamber (first foothills island): three ritual altars ring the central priestess chamber and each altar typically holds one plague crocodile in its patrol pool, with a further plague crocodile waiting inside the chamber itself. A complete lap of the altars plus the interior clear can return up to six bile in a single visit. Regular crocodiles spawn alongside the plague variants for additional Crocodile Tail drops used in high-strength food recipes.
Tainted Ruins of an Ancient Temple (Cursed Swamps): the northern section of the ruin hosts at least one one-star plague crocodile plus a no-star plague crocodile, so the two-for-one clear fits neatly into the same run used to sweep the ruin's respawning containers for Tumbaga Ingot.
The Crypt island (Cursed Swamps): a wide circular sweep of the crypt perimeter surfaces one to two plague crocodiles without pulling the witch boss that patrols the central chamber. Looping the outer ring rather than pushing into the middle is the reliable pattern.
Chaining these three sites on the six-hour respawn cycle provides roughly ten to twelve bile per lap, which is enough to keep a steady pipeline of Ingot Arborum production going at the Enchanting Table without waiting on rare random swamp patrols.
