Stamina states describe the two functional states of the stamina bar in Windrose. Normal stamina regenerates quickly between actions, while the Winded debuff, triggered by fully depleting the bar, temporarily removes access to dodging and sprinting.
Normal Stamina
Stamina drains with every action that costs it: attacks (light and heavy), dodges, sprints, jumps, and holding block under sustained pressure. When the bar is not empty, stamina regenerates automatically as long as you are not actively spending it. The only continuous action that prevents regeneration is holding block; releasing block immediately resumes regen.
The Winded State
Fully depleting stamina triggers the Winded debuff. While Winded:
You cannot sprint
You cannot dodge
You can still walk, attack with light strikes, and block (at a heavy cost)
Stamina regenerates more slowly than from a partial empty, because the bar has to cross a short recovery threshold before it is usable again
Winded typically lasts a short, fixed period (precise duration numbers are not published by the developer; community reports put it in the 1 to 3 second range before the bar starts refilling at a normal rate). Players describe it as the single most dangerous state in any serious fight, because committed enemy attacks cannot be dodged while it is active.
Avoiding Winded
Never empty the bar. The Soulslite combat loop is built around leaving at least one small segment of stamina in reserve at all times. Community advice: keep an eye on the bar and use dashes rather than sprints to reposition when the gauge drops below one-third
Drop the block between absorbed hits. Holding block while stamina is empty is a silent trap: no stamina regenerates while block is held, so panic-holding block locks you in the vulnerable state longer. Tap block, do not hold it
Endurance matters. Each point of Endurance raises the maximum stamina pool by a fixed amount (5 points per Endurance invested). Endurance-heavy builds empty the bar later, which widens the safety margin in extended fights
Stamina food buffs. Foods that raise Endurance stack on top of attribute points. Spicy chicken and similar bonuses can add 10 to 20 effective Endurance during a boss fight, enough to shift a "Winded by mistake" fight into a manageable one
The Marathon Runner talent. This Toughguy branch Tier 0 talent reduces stamina drain while moving. It is one of the single most impactful first-talent-picks in the game for any build
Perfect Block and Stamina
A successful Perfect Block returns a small amount of stamina immediately on the parry, making parry-focused builds much more stamina-efficient than raw-block builds. Missed timing windows still cost stamina as if a normal block had been held. Against Drowners and similar slow-windup enemies, a handful of Perfect Blocks per fight can extend your effective stamina pool by 20 to 30 percent.
