Winter Oilseed is a farming crop in Starsand Island, classified as a Vegetable and unlocked at the Apprentice Farmer tier. It grows on standard Farmland or in a Planting Box during Autumn and Winter, takes just 1 day to mature, and produces 4 Winter Oilseeds per harvest. Its in-game description reads: "After braving an entire winter, this oilseed variety grows tougher and hardier than spring rapeseed!"
With a base sell price of only 22 Coins per unit, Winter Oilseed is not a high-value crop. Its primary appeal is its extremely fast 1-day growth cycle and low seed cost of 60 Coins, making it one of the earliest and most accessible crops in the game. Winter Oilseed is particularly useful for new players who need to fill their fields during the colder months before higher-tier crops become available. It also is a consistent source of Vegetable Juice through the Grinder and can be pickled at the Pickling Jar for a better return.
Some guides and community wikis refer to this crop as "Winter Canola." Both names describe the same plant. This article uses "Winter Oilseed" since it is the more common name across major English-language farming guides.

Winter Oilseed Seeds are purchased from Graminova at the Happiness Seed Shop for 60 Coins per bag. The shop is open daily from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Graminova stocks these seeds year-round, but the crop itself only grows during Autumn and Winter. Planting outside those two seasons will cause the seeds to wither and die.
As an Apprentice Farmer crop, Winter Oilseed Seeds are available from the very start of your farming journey. You do not need to complete any additional trials or certifications to unlock them. This makes Winter Oilseed one of the first crops new players can grow.
At the Senior Farmer tier, the Separator can process 2 harvested Winter Oilseeds into Winter Oilseed Seeds. This removes the need to buy seeds from the shop, turning each harvest into a self-sustaining cycle. Since 4 Winter Oilseeds are produced per harvest, you can convert 2 back into seeds and sell or process the remaining 2, maintaining continuous planting at zero seed cost.
Winter Oilseeds grow on standard Farmland or in a Planting Box. They do not require a Trellis or Paddy Field. The growing process follows the same steps as any farmland crop.
Till the soil: Use your Hoe on a patch of Farmland to create a planting spot.
Plant the seed: Select Winter Oilseed Seeds from your inventory and place them in the tilled soil.
Water daily: Water the crop using your Watering Can, or set up Sprinklers to automate the process.
Wait 1 day: Winter Oilseed takes just 1 full day to reach maturity. Growth time starts from the moment you plant, not at the start of a new day. This is the fastest growth cycle of any standard crop in the game.
Harvest: Walk up to the mature plant and interact with it to collect 4 Winter Oilseeds. The crop does not regrow after harvesting; you will need to replant seeds for each new cycle.
Because Winter Oilseed matures in just 1 day, it pairs exceptionally well with Yield Fertilizer. Yield Fertilizer I boosts harvest quantity by 50% (6 instead of 4), and Yield Fertilizer II by 150% (10 instead of 4). The rapid turnaround means you can apply fertilizer frequently without wasting growing days. Ripening Fertilizer is less useful here since the base growth time is already so short.
Winter Oilseeds sell for 22 Coins each at the General Store. A standard harvest of 4 Winter Oilseeds brings in 88 Coins. After subtracting the 60 Coin seed cost, that leaves a net profit of 28 Coins per harvest, or 28.0 Coins per day over the 1-day growth period.
This profit margin is relatively low compared to higher-tier crops. For comparison, Winter Melon (Junior Farmer) earns 81.0 Coins/day, and Strawberry (Senior Farmer) earns even more. However, Winter Oilseed is available at the very first farming tier and its 1-day cycle means you never lose time to a failed season transition. See the Crop Profitability Rankings for a full comparison across all tiers.
There are several ways to get more value out of your Winter Oilseed harvest beyond selling raw.
Method | Details | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Merchant Ship | Sell to the Merchant Ship when it docks at Starsand Port. It pays 200% of the normal sell price. | 44 Coins per Winter Oilseed |
Pickling Jar | Process into Pickled Winter Oilseed at the Pickling Jar (2 Winter Oilseed + 2 Salt Brick). | Pickled goods sell for significantly more than raw crops |
Merchant Ship + Pickling | Pickle your Winter Oilseeds first, then sell the pickled version during Merchant Ship visits for the highest possible return. | Best overall profit per crop |
Winter Oilseed can be processed at three different stations. Each serves a different purpose in the farming and cooking pipeline.
Station | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
2 Winter Oilseed + 2 Salt Brick | 1 Pickled Winter Oilseed | |
1 Winter Oilseed | ||
2 Winter Oilseed | Winter Oilseed Seeds |
The Pickling Jar is the most profitable processing option. It takes 2 Winter Oilseeds and 2 Salt Brick to produce one jar of Pickled Winter Oilseed, which sells for considerably more than the raw crop. The Pickling Jar blueprint becomes available at the Intermediate Farmer rank, so this option is not immediately accessible to Apprentice Farmers.
The Grinder converts each Winter Oilseed into 2 Vegetable Juice. Vegetable Juice is a useful cooking ingredient and also functions as livestock feed. If you keep animals on your farm, dedicating part of your Winter Oilseed harvest to Vegetable Juice production can help maintain a steady feed supply.
The Separator converts 2 Winter Oilseeds back into Winter Oilseed Seeds. This is the seed recycling path: harvest 4 oilseeds, convert 2 into seeds for the next planting, and sell or process the other 2. Once you reach the Senior Farmer tier, this cycle eliminates seed costs entirely.
Note that despite being an "oilseed" crop, Winter Oilseed is not used to produce Cooking Oil. The Brewing Barrel creates Cooking Oil from Peanut instead.
Winter Oilseed is not used as a direct ingredient in any cooking recipes. Its value in the cooking pipeline comes indirectly through processing: the Vegetable Juice produced by the Grinder can be used as an ingredient in various dishes, and the Pickled Winter Oilseed from the Pickling Jar can be sold for profit to fund other cooking activities.
Winter Oilseeds can be given as gifts to characters on the island. Knowing who appreciates this crop helps you build friendship efficiently.

While Winter Oilseed is not a high-value gift, it is appreciated by Matilda and Sagewood. Given the crop's fast growth and low cost, it can serve as an inexpensive way to maintain friendship with these two characters during Autumn and Winter. Avoid giving Winter Oilseeds to Alex, Delphin, Loren, or Neona, as they actively dislike receiving them.
At the Senior Farmer tier, you unlock the Eternal Blessings skill from the Farming profession tree. When this skill is active, every regular harvest has a chance to produce an Everlasting Seed instead of a normal crop. Everlasting Winter Oilseed Seeds work like permanent plants: after each harvest, the crop regrows automatically without needing to be replanted or re-seeded.
Once you have an Everlasting Winter Oilseed planted, the seed cost effectively drops to zero for every subsequent harvest. This raises your daily profit from 28.0 Coins/day to 88.0 Coins/day (since you no longer spend 60 Coins on seeds each day). Everlasting Seeds also ignore season restrictions entirely, so an Everlasting Winter Oilseed will continue producing year-round, not just in Autumn and Winter.
Tips for obtaining Everlasting Winter Oilseed Seeds faster:
Upgrade the Eternal Blessings skill as soon as you reach Senior Farmer. Higher blessing levels increase the conversion chance.
Plant large batches of regular Winter Oilseeds. The 1-day growth cycle means you get more harvest attempts per season than almost any other crop, giving you more chances to trigger an Everlasting Seed drop.
Eating Mirthshroom Soup grants a temporary buff that increases the chance of dropping Everlasting Seeds when harvesting.
Everlasting Seeds can also drop from Islandpedia entries and lucky chests found while tilling soil.
If you remove an Everlasting Winter Oilseed from its tile, the Everlasting Seed returns to your inventory. You can replant it wherever you like without losing it.
Winter Oilseed's 1-day growth cycle makes it ideal for quickly leveling up your Farming profession. Every harvest grants Farming experience, and no other standard crop lets you harvest as frequently.
Use Winter Oilseed to fill empty farmland tiles during Autumn and Winter while waiting for longer-cycle crops like Winter Melon or Carrot to mature. The quick turnaround ensures your fields are never sitting idle.
Set up Sprinklers to automate watering. With daily harvests and replants, manually watering every tile becomes tedious fast.
If you are purely farming for money at the Apprentice tier, Winter Oilseed is one of your few options during Autumn and Winter. As soon as you unlock Junior Farmer crops like Winter Melon, consider transitioning your main fields to higher-value crops.
Do not sell Winter Oilseeds raw if you can avoid it. Processing them through the Pickling Jar yields a much better return per crop.
Save your pickled Winter Oilseed for the Merchant Ship visit. The 200% buy price stacks with the pickling value increase for the highest possible return.
Despite the name, Winter Oilseed does not produce Cooking Oil. If you need Cooking Oil for recipes, grow Peanut instead and process it in the Brewing Barrel.
The 1-day cycle also makes Winter Oilseed the best crop for farming Everlasting Seeds once you unlock Eternal Blessings. More harvests per season means more rolls on the Everlasting Seed drop chance.
Winter Oilseed can grow in a Planting Box, making it an option for indoor or greenhouse farming setups where space is limited.
