Overview
Tomato is a trellis crop in Starsand Island, described in-game as a fruit that "can be eaten raw or cooked, but tastes best as a sauce." It grows during Spring and Summer, making it a reliable two-season earner during the warmer months. Tomato matures in 2 days and 12 hours, yields 2 Tomatoes per harvest, and can be harvested twice from a single planting before the vine is spent.

Tomato Seeds unlock at the Junior Farmer tier of the Farming profession and are purchased from the Happiness Seed Shop for 150 Coins. Because Tomato is a trellis crop, it requires a Trellis structure rather than standard tilled farmland. The Trellis is unlocked during the Apprentice Farmer tier through the "Natural Delicacies" quest, so by the time you reach Junior Farmer, you will already have access to it.
Tomato is one of the most versatile crops on the island. It appears in four different cooking recipes, can be processed into Tomato Ketchup at the Jam Maker, broken down into Vegetable Juice at the Separator, or ground back into seeds using the Grinder. Several island residents love receiving Tomatoes as gifts, making this crop useful for both profit and friendship building.

How to Obtain Seeds
Tomato Seeds are sold by Graminova at the Happiness Seed Shop for 150 Coins per seed bag. The shop is located in Starsand Town and operates daily. You must reach the Junior Farmer tier before Tomato Seeds appear in the shop inventory.
To unlock Junior Farmer, complete the Apprentice Farmer trial quests given by Graminova. Once you earn the Junior Farmer certification, Tomato Seeds (along with other Junior-tier seeds like Pepper, Green Grape, and Red Grape) become permanently available for purchase.
Seeds are not locked by season at the point of purchase. You can buy Tomato Seeds during any season and stockpile them for the next Spring or Summer planting window. This is especially useful near the end of Winter when you want to prepare your inventory for the coming growing season.
An alternative way to obtain Tomato Seeds is through the Grinder. Loading 2 Tomatoes into the Grinder will produce Tomato Seeds, allowing you to recycle part of your harvest back into planting material. You can also occasionally find Tomato Seeds through general exploration by chopping trees and shrubs, foraging weeds, and opening Treasure Chests scattered across the island.
Growing Tomato
Tomato is a vine crop that requires a Trellis to grow. Unlike crops planted on standard farmland, you place a Trellis structure on the ground and then plant the seed into it. Trellises auto-till the soil beneath them when placed, so you do not need to use your hoe on the ground first. This saves stamina compared to standard Farmland crops where you must till each plot manually.
After planting, Tomato takes 2 days and 12 hours to reach its first harvest. Water the crop every day for it to grow on schedule. If you skip a day of watering, growth will stall until the next time you water it. Once the plant is ready, harvest it to collect 2 Tomatoes.
Tomato is a multi-harvest crop. After the first harvest, the vine does not disappear. Instead, it enters a regrowth phase lasting 5 days. Once regrowth is complete, you can harvest another 2 Tomatoes from the same plant. After the second harvest, the vine is spent and the Trellis becomes empty, requiring you to plant a new seed if you want to continue growing Tomatoes in that spot.
In total, one Tomato seed produces 4 Tomatoes across two harvests (2 per pick). The full cycle from planting to final harvest takes 7 days and 12 hours (2.5 days initial growth plus 5 days regrowth). This is more efficient than replanting single-harvest crops of similar value, since you save the cost of a second seed.
Trellis Mechanics
The Trellis is a permanent farming structure that does not break or disappear after crops are harvested. You can reuse the same Trellis for multiple planting cycles. Trellises also occupy a single tile, just like a standard farmland plot. Other trellis crops include Cucumber, Pepper, Green Grape, Red Grape, Cherry Tomato, Honeyvine, Star Plum, and Jadelume.
You can place sprinklers near Trellises to automate daily watering, which is recommended for larger Tomato fields. Since the vine stays alive through the regrowth period, sprinklers provide continuous value across both harvests.
Seasonal Availability
Tomato grows in Spring and Summer. Each season lasts 28 in-game days. With the initial 2.5-day growth and 5-day regrowth, one full Tomato cycle (two harvests) takes 7.5 days. You can fit roughly three full cycles within a single season if you plant on day 1. Planting early and keeping your Trellises occupied continuously through both Spring and Summer maximizes your total yield.
If you are nearing the end of Summer and cannot complete a full regrowth cycle before the season changes to Autumn, it may still be worth planting for the first harvest alone. The first harvest of 2 Tomatoes at 103 Coins each still returns 206 Coins on a 150-Coin investment, netting 56 Coins of profit even without the second pick.
Sell Price and Profit
Each Tomato sells for 103 Coins. Since one seed (150 Coins) produces 4 Tomatoes across two harvests, a single planting yields 412 Coins in revenue, for a net profit of 262 Coins per seed. Over the 7.5-day full growth cycle, that works out to roughly 35 Coins of profit per day per Trellis.
For higher returns, consider selling your harvest to the Merchant Ship when it docks at Starsand Town. The Merchant Ship pays roughly double the standard vendor price for select goods, which could push Tomato revenue to around 206 Coins per fruit. Timing your harvests to coincide with the ship's visits maximizes your earnings.
You can also increase profit by processing Tomatoes into cooked dishes or Tomato Ketchup. The most profitable cooking option is Ruby Borscht (620 Coins sell price), though it requires additional ingredients. For a full breakdown of crop earnings, see the Crop Profitability Rankings page.
Recipes Using Tomato
Tomato is used as a cooking ingredient in four recipes. The table below lists each recipe, its required ingredients, the cooking station, and the cooking time.
Recipe | Ingredients | Station | Time | Sell Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Dragon Fruit x3, Red Grape x1, Tomato x1 | 59s | 252 Coins | ||
Mint x1, Tomato x2, Meat Bites x3 | 146s | 620 Coins | ||
102s | 498 Coins | |||
Tomato x2, Egg x2 | 63s | 316 Coins |
Tomato Egg Bloom is the simplest recipe, requiring only 2 Tomatoes and 2 Eggs with no additional processed ingredients. It sells for 316 Coins and is a good way to add value to your Tomato harvest with minimal effort. Ruby Borscht offers the highest sell price at 620 Coins but requires Mint and Meat Bites in addition to 2 Tomatoes.
Red-Hot Medley is obtained from the Beach Festival event and calls for Dragon Fruit, Red Grape, and a single Tomato. Tomato Beef Stew is available from the Aureleaf Kitchen and requires Potatoes and Beef alongside your Tomatoes.
Processing Options
Beyond cooking, Tomato can be processed at three different stations to produce useful materials.
Station | Input | Output | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Tomato x2 + Sugar x3 | Used as a condiment in savory cooking recipes | ||
Tomato | Common cooking ingredient used in many recipes | ||
Tomato x2 | Tomato Seeds | Recycle harvested Tomatoes back into planting material |
Tomato Ketchup is produced at the Jam Maker and functions as a condiment in savory recipes rather than a sweet jam. Each batch requires 2 Tomatoes and 3 Sugar, with Sugar obtained by processing Sugarcane or Beetroot at the Separator. The Jam Maker processes the batch over roughly half an in-game day.
Processing Tomato at the Separator yields Vegetable Juice, one of the most commonly required cooking ingredients in the game. If you have a surplus of Tomatoes and need Vegetable Juice for recipes, this is a practical way to put extra harvests to use.
Gifting Preferences
Tomato is a popular gift item among island residents and animals. Giving a Tomato to a character who loves it provides a significant boost to your friendship level. Below are the known preferences.
Preference | |
|---|---|
Loved | Capybara, Graminova, Little Panda, Marston, Matilda, Parrot, Sagewood, Squirrel |
Liked | Most other characters |
Neutral | Dog, Panda |
Disliked | Cat, Ferret |
Since Graminova loves Tomatoes and she is the Farming profession mentor, gifting her Tomatoes is a convenient way to raise friendship while you are already visiting the Happiness Seed Shop to buy seeds. Marston and Sagewood are also easy to find in town, making them good gifting targets as you go about your daily routine.
Everlasting Tomato Seeds
Like all crops in Starsand Island, Tomato has an Everlasting variant. Everlasting Tomato Seeds produce a vine that does not become spent after the second harvest. Instead, the crop continues regrowing and producing Tomatoes indefinitely, eliminating the need to buy new seeds and replant.
There are several ways to obtain Everlasting Tomato Seeds:
Islandpedia Rewards: Completing certain entries in the Plants section of the Islandpedia may reward you with Everlasting Seeds for specific crops.
Eternal Blessings Skill: The Senior Farmer tier unlocks the Eternal Blessings skill, which gives a chance of receiving an Everlasting Seed when harvesting any regular crop. The higher your farming proficiency, the better the odds.
Random Harvest Drops: Occasionally, harvesting a normal Tomato vine will yield an Everlasting Tomato Seed alongside the regular Tomatoes.
Everlasting Seeds are safe to relocate. If you remove an Everlasting crop from a Trellis, the seed returns to your inventory so you can replant it elsewhere without losing your investment. Over time, building up a collection of Everlasting Tomato Seeds lets you maintain a permanent Tomato field that produces fruit every 5 days without any ongoing seed costs.
Comparison with Similar Trellis Crops
Tomato is one of several trellis crops available at the Junior Farmer tier and above. The table below compares it with other vine crops to help you decide which to prioritize.
Crop | Tier | Growth Time | Harvests | Regrowth | Seed Cost | Sell Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Tomato | Junior | 2d 12h | 2 | 5 days | 150g | 103g |
Apprentice | 2 days | 2 | 2 days | 95g | 66g | |
Junior | 2d 6h | 2 | 2d 6h | 160g | 101g | |
Intermediate | 3d 6h | 3 | 9d 18h | 240g | 139g |
Tomato and Pepper are close competitors at the Junior tier. Pepper costs 10 Coins more per seed (160g vs 150g) and sells for slightly less per fruit (101g vs 103g), but Pepper regrows faster (2 days 6 hours vs 5 days). This means Pepper produces more total harvests in the same time window if you keep it planted through its full multi-harvest cycle. However, Tomato has a lower entry cost and a slightly higher sell price per unit, making it a better pick for players who want simple, low-investment returns.
Cherry Tomato is the Intermediate-tier upgrade. It takes longer to grow and costs more per seed, but offers 3 harvests instead of 2 and sells at a higher price per fruit. If you have reached Intermediate Farmer and want to maximize Trellis income, Cherry Tomato is generally more profitable over a full season.
Tips
Plant on day 1 of Spring: Starting early gives you the most harvest cycles across two consecutive growing seasons. A Tomato vine planted on the first day of Spring can complete its two-harvest cycle in 7.5 days, leaving plenty of time for additional plantings.
Use sprinklers on your Trellises: Since Tomato requires daily watering and the vine persists through regrowth, sprinklers save significant time on larger farms. Place sprinklers to cover your Trellis rows and focus your energy on other tasks.
Gift Tomatoes to Graminova: She loves them, and you are already visiting her shop for seeds. Raising her friendship level unlocks additional rewards and dialogue.
Cook Tomato Egg Bloom for easy profit: If you have chickens producing Eggs, combining 2 Tomatoes and 2 Eggs into Tomato Egg Bloom (316 Coins) is a straightforward way to boost your revenue with minimal extra ingredients.
Process surplus into Vegetable Juice: If you have more Tomatoes than you can sell or cook, run them through the Separator to make Vegetable Juice. It is one of the most frequently required cooking ingredients and having a stockpile saves time later.
Work toward Everlasting Seeds: Once you reach Senior Farmer and unlock the Eternal Blessings skill, every Tomato harvest has a chance of dropping an Everlasting Seed. Over time, this eliminates seed costs entirely and turns Tomato farming into pure profit.
