Divorce
Guide to divorce in inZOI covering how marriages end, the breakup interaction, household splitting, Meow division, emotional effects on spouses and children, custody mechanics, karma implications, the connection to the Trial and Justice system, and post-divorce life including remarriage.
Divorce in inZOI ends a marriage between two Zois, splitting the household and changing the relationship status from Spouse back to a lower level. Divorce has emotional consequences for both Zois and any children in the household. It can happen organically through gameplay or be deliberately triggered by the player through sustained negative interactions.
How Divorce Happens
A marriage can deteriorate through sustained negative interactions, arguments, neglect, or relationship-damaging actions like rumor spreading, crime, or romantic betrayal. When the romance meter between spouses drops low enough, the option to break up becomes available through social interactions. Either spouse can initiate the separation.
The breakup interaction appears in the social menu under negative or confrontational options once the relationship has deteriorated sufficiently. Selecting it triggers a conversation between the two Zois, after which the marriage is dissolved. There is no confirmation dialog or cooldown period; once the interaction completes, the divorce is final.
Certain actions accelerate the breakdown: sustained fighting, ignoring the spouse's needs, hostile text messages, and romantic involvement with other Zois. Traits affect how quickly a marriage deteriorates. Zois with the Authoritarian trait may push partners away faster, while Zois with the Charmer trait may recover from conflicts more easily.
The Separation Process
When the breakup interaction completes, the marriage ends. One spouse typically remains in the current home while the other needs to find new housing. The household splits: shared Meow is divided, and each Zoi retains their personal inventory and career status.

The departing spouse moves out of the property. If they have no other housing available, they relocate to a default lot or become a city NPC until the player assigns them to new housing through the Manage Zois menu. Furniture and property remain with the household that stays.
Emotional Effects
Divorce triggers strong emotional responses that last for multiple in-game days:
Affected Zoi | Effect |
|---|---|
Both spouses | Experience sadness and potentially depression. The emotional impact lasts for multiple in-game days, reducing productivity, social willingness, and overall mood. Skill leveling and work performance may suffer during this period. |
Children | Children in the household experience emotional distress. Their needs may decline more rapidly during the adjustment period, and they may resist social interactions or perform worse at school. |
Extended network | Close friends and family of both spouses may react depending on their relationships with each party. Mutual friends may take sides, affecting the broader social network. |
The duration and intensity of emotional effects varies by personality. Zois with resilient traits recover faster, while emotionally sensitive Zois may carry the impact for the rest of the current life stage.
Children and Custody
When a household with children splits, the children typically remain with the parent who stays in the home. The parent who leaves moves out without the children by default. Players can manually rearrange household members through the Manage Zois menu to adjust custody arrangements.
Children maintain relationships with both parents after divorce. The non-custodial parent can still visit and interact with the children, though the relationship may weaken without regular contact. If the non-custodial parent moves far away or the player does not actively maintain the relationship, the bond decays over time.
The 2026 roadmap includes planned improvements to custody mechanics, including formal divorce lawsuits and custody proceedings through an expanded Trial and Justice system.
Karma Implications
The act of divorce itself does not directly change karma scores. However, the behaviors that commonly lead to divorce (fighting, cruelty, betrayal, neglect) all carry karma penalties. A Zoi who destroyed their marriage through antisocial behavior will likely have lower karma from those accumulated actions, regardless of whether a formal divorce occurs.
Conversely, a Zoi who was the victim of their partner's bad behavior does not receive karma penalties from the divorce. The karma system tracks individual actions, not relationship outcomes.
Connection to the Trial and Justice System
The Trial and Justice System introduced in v0.5.0 established a legal framework in inZOI. While divorce lawsuits are not currently implemented as of v0.6.1, the 2026 roadmap lists them as a planned feature. When implemented, divorce proceedings would involve courtroom interactions, potential alimony, and formal custody decisions handled through the justice system rather than the current simplified breakup interaction.
Post-Divorce Life
After divorce, both Zois return to the dating pool. They can pursue new romantic relationships and eventually remarry. There is no cooldown period preventing a divorced Zoi from entering a new relationship immediately, though the emotional debuffs from the divorce may make early social interactions less successful.
Former spouses can develop any relationship level with each other after the divorce, from hostile to friendly, depending on subsequent interactions. There is no special "ex-spouse" relationship status. The relationship simply drops to whatever level their current interactions support.
Remarriage follows the same process as first marriage: building romance, progressing through relationship stages, and eventually proposing. A Zoi can marry and divorce multiple times throughout their lifespan with no hard limit on the number of marriages.
Tips
If you want to preserve a marriage, prioritize positive interactions and keep both spouses' needs high. Regular dates, gifts, and compliments all help maintain the romance meter.
Watch the romance meter in the relationship panel. Once it drops into the red zone, the breakup option becomes available, and accidental clicks can end the marriage instantly.
If you deliberately want to trigger a divorce for storytelling purposes, the fastest method is to have one spouse pursue a romantic relationship with another Zoi in view of their partner.
After divorce, manually check the children's needs and emotional state. They may need extra attention and positive interactions to stabilize.
Divorced Zois who share custody of children will need to coordinate visits. The non-custodial parent should visit regularly to prevent the parent-child relationship from decaying.
