Rapiers are a category of one-handed melee weapons in Crimson Desert. They are the signature weapon type of Damiane, one of the three playable characters, and emphasize speed, precision, and mobility over raw damage output. Rapiers are the fastest melee weapon type in the game, featuring rapid thrust-based attacks that reward accurate positioning and well-timed inputs.
Every rapier is wielded in the main hand and paired with a small buckler shield in the off-hand. This combination gives Damiane access to quick-step parries that create openings for devastating ripostes and extended combo strings. The rapier and buckler pairing defines a high-skill, high-reward playstyle that is distinct from the heavier, more defensive weapon options available to Kliff and Oongka.
There are 16 rapiers available in the game. They range from the starting White Wind Rapier that Damiane begins with, to rare finds like the Fallen Kingdom's Rapier hidden in the Icemoor Castle Ruins. All rapiers can be refined from +0 to +10 at a Blacksmith, and each supports three Abyss Core slots for further customization.
The rapier's defining trait is its attack speed. Damiane's light attack chain consists of a 5-hit thrust combo that executes faster than any other melee combo in the game. Each strike is a quick forward lunge, and the recovery between swings is minimal. This allows Damiane to apply sustained pressure on enemies and exploit openings that would close before a slower weapon could connect.
Heavy attacks with the rapier deliver a ranged AoE burst called Smiting Bolt, which blasts enemies with blinding light. This ability gives the rapier unexpected range for a melee weapon and lets Damiane deal damage from a safe distance when stamina allows.
The buckler paired with every rapier provides minimal passive blocking capability. Holding block with the buckler drains stamina rapidly and is not a sustainable defensive strategy. Instead, the buckler enables a quick-step parry with a tighter timing window than Kliff's standard block-and-parry system.
Successfully timing a buckler parry staggers the enemy briefly, opening them to a riposte or a full combo string. The riposte converts a successful parry into an instant counterattack that deals massive damage. A successful parry followed by a full 5-hit rapier combo delivers more total damage in a shorter window than most other weapon combinations in the game. The higher risk of the tight parry timing is balanced by this exceptional follow-up potential.
Rapiers have a natural advantage when targeting enemy weak points. Thrusting attacks aimed at glowing weak spots on enemies (typically the head, joints, or exposed areas) deal 30 to 40% bonus damage. This makes rapiers particularly effective against bosses with visible weak points, where precise aim and careful positioning are rewarded with significantly higher damage output.
Damiane's combat style blends rapier strikes with her ranged weapons. She carries a flintlock pistol for mid-range shots and a musket for longer engagements. What makes this integration distinctive is that Damiane can fire her pistol between rapier swings without breaking her combo rhythm. This creates a fluid fighting style where melee thrusts are punctuated by gunshots, keeping pressure on enemies at varying distances.
The buckler is not just a defensive tool. Damiane can throw it at enemies using the Shield Toss ability, bouncing it between 3 to 7 targets depending on the skill's upgrade level. At max rank, the shield returns to Damiane automatically, allowing seamless transitions back into rapier combos. Shield Toss is tested in the fifth Rapier and Shield Challenge, which requires hitting 9 enemies within 15 seconds with the ability.
Damiane has several skills in her skill tree that directly enhance rapier combat. These skills improve her melee burst damage, gap-closing ability, and combo potential.
Skill | Type | Effect |
|---|---|---|
Melee Burst | Chains rapid rapier strikes after a dodge, allowing Damiane to attack while simultaneously evading. At Level 2, Sword Flurry can be used one additional time. | |
Gap Closer | A forward thrust that closes distance quickly. Keeps Damiane in melee range for fast follow-up strikes. Upgrades into Uppercut, Skewer, and Rend Armor branches. | |
Crowd Control | Unlocked at Piercing Light Level 2. Launches enemies into the air after a successful charged Piercing Light hit. Useful for crowd control and setting up aerial follow-ups. | |
Damage | A Piercing Light branch skill that impales the target for high single-target damage. | |
Rend Armor | Debuff | A Piercing Light branch skill that shreds enemy armor, reducing their defense and increasing the damage they take from all sources. |
Ranged AoE | Damiane's heavy attack. Blasts enemies with a burst of blinding light at range. Useful for dealing damage from a distance when closing the gap is too risky. | |
Ranged / Utility | Throws the buckler at enemies. Bounces between 3 to 7 targets depending on upgrade level. At max rank, the shield returns automatically. |
The table below summarizes the core stats shared by all rapiers as a weapon class, compared against other melee weapon types.
Stat | Rating |
|---|---|
Damage per Hit | Low to moderate |
Very fast (fastest melee weapon) | |
Critical Hit Bonus | 30-40% on weak point hits |
Low | |
Range | Short to medium (thrust-focused) |
Combo Length | 5-hit light combo |
Rapiers occupy a specific niche in the weapon hierarchy. They excel at single-target precision damage but lack the stagger power and crowd control of heavier options.
Weapon | Speed | Damage | Best For | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Very fast | Low-moderate | Low | Precision damage, boss weak points | |
Fast | Moderate | Moderate | Balanced combat, versatile pairing | |
Slow | Very high | High | Heavy single-target damage | |
Moderate | Moderate-high | Moderate | Range advantage, group control | |
Very fast | Low | Very low | Status effects, dual-wield combos |

Rapiers roughly divide into two tiers based on their base attack and maximum refinement potential.
The Grace Rapier, Volono Rapier, Rapier of Amity, Gilliam Rapier, Leonne Rapier, and Royal Oath all share a base attack of 11 that scales to 31 at +10. These rapiers have Attack Speed Lv. 1, which is slightly slower than the Lv. 2 options but compensated by their higher raw damage. Among this group, Royal Oath stands out because it also carries a base Critical Rate of Lv. 1, giving it an edge in overall damage output.
The White Wind Rapier, Fallen Kingdom's Rapier, Lambert Rapier, Inquisitor's Rapier, and Liberre Rapier trade raw attack power for Attack Speed Lv. 2, which upgrades to Lv. 3 at +10 refinement. These rapiers swing noticeably faster, making them suited for players who prioritize combo speed and parry-riposte windows over per-hit damage.
The remaining rapiers (Brass Rose Rapier, Elenore Rapier, Elemore Rapier, Dueling Rapier, and Fallen Noble's Rapier) sit at base 9 ATK with Attack Speed Lv. 1 but come with a base Critical Rate of Lv. 1. This gives them a hybrid profile that balances speed with occasional bursts of higher damage from critical strikes. The Elemore Rapier is unique among all rapiers for its +4% damage bonus against earthen beings.
All rapiers can be refined from +0 to +10 at any Blacksmith. Refinement increases a rapier's base attack and, for some rapiers, improves their Attack Speed or Critical Rate at higher levels. The materials required escalate at each tier.
Refinement Level | Notes | |
|---|---|---|
+1 to +4 | Basic materials; attack increases by 1-2 per level | |
+5 to +7 | Bloodstone becomes required; Abyss Artifacts may also be needed | |
+8 to +10 | Scolecite Ore, Bloodstone, Abyss Artifacts | Rare materials required; cost escalates significantly |
The Fallen Kingdom's Rapier is a notable exception because it is found already at +5 refinement inside the Icemoor Castle Ruins. This saves a meaningful amount of materials and makes it immediately competitive with rapiers that players would otherwise need to refine from scratch.
Every rapier has 3 Abyss Core slots. These slots accept Abyss Gear augments that grant bonuses such as increased attack speed, higher critical hit chance, bonus elemental damage, or defensive stats. Because rapiers already benefit from high attack speed, popular augment choices for rapier users include Critical Rate bonuses (to capitalize on weak point targeting) and Stamina Recovery (to sustain longer combo chains and more frequent parries).
There are 5 Rapier and Shield Challenges in the game, known as the Dancing Blade, Shining Shield series. These mastery trials test specific aspects of rapier combat, from defeating enemies quickly to performing counterattacks and using Shield Toss effectively. Completing all five unlocks the Master of Rapiers trophy and achievement. Each challenge requires picking up its associated Sealed Abyss Artifact before it can be attempted.
Challenge | Objective | Location |
|---|---|---|
Dancing Blade, Shining Shield 1 | Defeat 5 enemies with a rapier within 60 seconds | Hernand, south of Meshley Trapsmith |
Dancing Blade, Shining Shield 2 | Perform 10 rapier counterattacks within 30 seconds | Hernand region |
Dancing Blade, Shining Shield 3 | Hit prone enemies 5 times with a rapier | Demeniss, south of Ironwood Farmhouse |
Dancing Blade, Shining Shield 4 | Take down 3 enemies at once from over 10 metres away | Delesyia, northwest of Fort Windridge |
Dancing Blade, Shining Shield 5 | Hit 9 enemies within 15 seconds with Shield Toss | Demeniss, southwest of Spire of Clockwork |
The rapiers in Crimson Desert are closely tied to the culture and noble houses of Demeniss. Many rapiers bear the names of prominent families and reflect the political rivalries that define Demenissian society. The Gilliam Rapier and Lambert Rapier reference the deep-seated feud between House Gilliam and House Lambert, a conflict so old that few remember its origins. The Elemore Rapier represents the wealthiest and most influential noble house in Demeniss, while the Elenore Rapier is described as a cheap imitation of Elemore's weapons, purchased by impoverished nobles to keep up appearances.
The Rapier of Amity carries a cross-cultural story: it is a Demenissian weapon crafted in Pailunese style, once gifted as a diplomatic gesture between Pailune and the Kingdom of Demeniss. The Pailunese reportedly scoffed at the gift, claiming it looked more suited for sewing than for war. The Volono Rapier has a more somber origin as one half of a matched pair of twin blades, crafted as a token of love in the custom of Pywel lovers. The lone rapier hints at the tragic fate of its owners.
The Royal Oath was used in the coronation ceremonies of the Thorel royalty and once symbolized Demeniss's prosperity and royal legitimacy. It is now described as a faded relic that serves only as a reminder of past glory. The White Wind Rapier takes its name from the nickname of Demeniss's former guard captain, who first wielded it.
Learn the buckler parry timing. The parry window is tighter than Kliff's shield block, but a successful parry into a full 5-hit riposte combo delivers exceptional damage. Practice against predictable enemies before taking on bosses.
Target weak points. The 30-40% critical hit bonus on weak point strikes is the rapier's biggest damage advantage. Look for glowing spots on enemies and aim your thrusts carefully.
Weave in pistol shots. Damiane can fire her flintlock pistol between rapier swings without breaking the combo chain. Use this to maintain damage output while repositioning between thrusts.
Do not hold block with the buckler. It drains stamina too quickly to be sustainable. Rely on parries and Damiane's natural agility (dodges and Sword Flurry evasion) for defense.
Use Sword Flurry to close gaps and dodge simultaneously. This skill lets Damiane strike while evading sideways, making it excellent for repositioning during boss fights while keeping up damage.
Consider the Fallen Kingdom's Rapier early. Finding it at +5 refinement inside Icemoor Castle Ruins saves significant upgrade materials. Its Atk Speed Lv. 2 also makes it well suited for players learning the rapier's parry-riposte rhythm.
Choose between speed and damage. Rapiers with Atk Speed Lv. 2 (White Wind, Fallen Kingdom's, Lambert, Inquisitor's, Liberre) swing faster, while those with base ATK 11 (Grace, Volono, Gilliam, Leonne, Rapier of Amity, Royal Oath) hit harder. Pick based on whether you value combo speed or per-hit damage.
Rapiers struggle against large groups. The short range and low stagger make rapiers less effective against crowds. For group encounters, consider switching to a spear or using Shield Toss and Smiting Bolt to thin out enemies before engaging in melee.
