Applied Title Case to body headings
Reaching the mid and late game in Crimson Desert opens up several progression systems that are not immediately obvious. This guide covers the most impactful ways to increase your character's power, from raising stat caps through research to crafting Greater Abyss Gear through synthesis. Whether you are pushing through endgame bosses or preparing for the hardest content, the strategies below will make a significant difference.
Once your HP, Spirit, and Stamina reach level 10 or 11, you will notice that further upgrades require completing specific research projects at three distinct locations. Each stat has its own dedicated research institute, and the quest chains at each one follow a similar structure: meet the researcher, complete a short introductory task, then assign them to a series of timed research projects that progressively raise your stat cap.
Stat | Research Location | Researcher NPC | Cap Raised To |
|---|---|---|---|
HP | Grunvar | Level 18 | |
Village researcher | Level 18 | ||
Great Gate of Urdavah | Gate researcher | Level 18 |
To raise the HP cap, travel to the Scholastone Institute, located in the Scholastone region. Meet the researcher Grunvar just south of the fast travel waypoint. He initially asks you to purchase tea for him. Complete this simple errand and return to unlock his first research assignment.
The first research tier takes roughly two hours of in-game time. Once it finishes, new objectives appear around the institute that require you to interact with specific structures and speak to nearby NPCs. These take only a minute or two to complete, and then you can assign the second research tier.
The second research tier runs for approximately 8 to 16 hours. After that, the final tier becomes available. You may need to complete an objective labeled "Ancient Abyss Research" by interacting with an NPC before assigning the third project. The final research takes around 20 hours to complete. If progress halts at around 50%, check the Institute mission section in your quest log; an NPC nearby will need a quick conversation to unblock the research.
Spirit's cap is raised at the Pororin Research Institute, the hidden children's village south of Hernand. Getting access to Pororin requires a specific quest chain.
Start in Hernand where an NPC asks for help retrieving a mushroom. This quest leads you south near the children's village. When you arrive, the village children will shoot you with sleeping arrows and turn you away. You must insist on entering three separate times. After the third attempt, you wake up at your camp and find a child near a tree who gives you a new quest slightly east of the village. This quest involves climbing onto a walking giant's tree. Once you complete it and deliver the item, you earn permanent access to Pororin.
The researcher is found just south of the village near a river at a question mark on the map. Complete the short introductory quest and the research system unlocks. The research tiers follow the same structure as Scholastone, with progressively longer wait times. The Mysterious Energy of Wild Ginseng Research is one of the key projects at this institute.
Stamina's cap is raised at the Great Gate of Urdavah, located in the Crimson Desert region on the eastern side of the map. The researcher there has the simplest initial quest of the three. He asks for three Bloodstones, which are common materials. After delivering them, you can begin the tiered research process just like the other two institutes.
Like the others, you must complete all three tiers of research, each with increasing time requirements, to fully unlock the stamina cap.
Research Tier | Approximate Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Tier 1 | ~2 hours | Quick introductory research |
Tier 2 | 8-16 hours | May require completing nearby objectives |
Tier 3 | ~20 hours | Progress may stall at 50%; check quest log for NPC interaction |
The time listed is in-game time. You can continue adventuring while research runs in the background, though you should check back periodically to make sure progress has not stalled due to an NPC interaction requirement.
After unlocking the stat cap research, you will need Abyss Cells as a crafting material to continue upgrading HP, Spirit, and Stamina past the research thresholds. Abyss Cells are also used for crafting Abyss Gear, making them one of the most important late-game resources.
The best early farming spot for Abyss Cells is located above the Witchwoods, southwest of Hernand. In this area, you will find a cluster of plant-like Abyss enemies (also called Abyss creatures) that carry odd organic structures on their bodies. Use Force Palm against them, as it immediately takes them down and lets you retrieve the Abyss Cell from their body.
To make these enemies respawn, leave at least one alive (preferably one of the larger ones), then let yourself get defeated. You will respawn nearby, and all the enemies will have fully respawned. This lets you farm the same group repeatedly without waiting for a natural respawn timer.
Another reliable source is Bismuth Oreback Crabs, which cluster around Abyss Fast Travel Points. These enemies also drop Bismuth Ore alongside Abyss Cells, making them efficient to farm in a loop.
You can convert Abyss Cells into Abyssal Seeds by opening your inventory and selecting "Use" on an Abyss Cell. Plant the seeds at your camp's farmland once you have unlocked the farming plots through the camp expansion quest line.
Each seed grows into an Abyss tree in roughly three to four in-game days.
A fully grown tree yields four to five Abyss Cells per harvest.
The trees do not despawn like some other farmland options, making them a reliable passive source.
Applying fertilizer (rewarded from the Queen of Spiders and Restore Factory quests in Hernand) increases the yield to a full five cells per tree.
Set up a full row of trees to maximize output.
Between combat farming and Abyss Seed planting, you should have a steady supply of cells to keep your stats climbing.
One of the most common mistakes players make is placing attack-type Abyss Cores (attack speed, critical rate, or raw damage) on gloves or boots. This is a waste for any build that uses weapons, because attack cores on these armor pieces only apply to unarmed combat attacks performed with that specific limb.
Attack stats on gloves only take effect when you switch to barehanded combat and throw punches or grapples. They do not apply to any weapon swings. Attack stats on boots are even more restrictive, applying only to kick attacks. For example, if you socket two Critical Rate +3 cores into your gloves, your weapon's critical rate will not change at all. You will only see the bonus reflected when you physically switch to bare hands from the weapon wheel.
Core Type | Best Placement | Avoid Placement |
|---|---|---|
Weapon | Gloves, Boots | |
Weapon | Gloves, Boots | |
Attack Power / Destruction | Weapon | Gloves, Boots |
Damage Reduction | Gloves, Boots, Chest | N/A (works universally) |
Boots | N/A (works universally) | |
Elemental Resistance | Any armor piece | N/A (works universally) |
Ability Triggers | Any armor piece | N/A (works universally) |
Gathering Bonus | Any armor piece | N/A (works universally) |
The exception to this rule is if you are running a dedicated melee brawler build. In that case, place attack cores on gloves since that is where the majority of your unarmed damage comes from. Boots are still less efficient even for brawler builds, since kicks represent a smaller portion of unarmed attacks.
Players using two-handed weapons can still benefit from a shield's defensive stats without ever pulling it out in combat. As long as the shield is equipped in your loadout's shield slot, its full defense value applies passively even while you are wielding a two-handed weapon.
Here is how it works in practice: equip a shield in your shield slot and a two-handed weapon in the appropriate slot. When you draw the two-handed weapon, your character stows the shield on their back. Despite not being held, the shield's defense rating is fully active. In one example, removing the shield drops defense from 71 to 56, meaning the shield alone provides 15 points of defense.
This does not work if you remove the shield from the slot entirely, such as when switching to a dual-wield configuration. The shield must remain in the equipped shield slot to provide its passive bonus.
Keep a strong shield equipped even if you never plan to block with it.
Socket defensive or utility cores into the shield for even more passive value.
This is one of the best free defense boosts for any two-handed build.
Since placing attack cores on gloves and boots is inefficient, accessories become the primary way to boost critical rate, attack speed, and attack power across your entire build. Unlike armor-slotted cores, jewelry bonuses apply universally to all attacks regardless of weapon type.
Accessory Type | Typical Stat Bonus | Max Bonus at Full Upgrade |
|---|---|---|
Level 2-3 | ||
Level 2-3 | ||
Level 2-3 |
Focus your ring choices on whichever stat complements your build. If you want faster swings, seek out rings with attack speed. If you want more consistent critical hits, look for rings with critical rate. Necklaces often drop with critical rate as well, so pairing the right necklace with the right rings can push your secondary stats significantly higher without touching your weapon sockets.
The Lunar Judgment quest line in Demeniss is an excellent source of high-quality accessories. Each of the three mansions you clear contains a basement puzzle that rewards a powerful accessory, including necklaces with high critical rate bonuses.
Every weapon in the game falls into one of two categories: pure attack power weapons or combination weapons. Understanding the difference is important for optimizing your build.
Weapon Category | Attack Power at Max Level | Best For | |
|---|---|---|---|
Pure Attack Power | Higher by ~4 levels | None | Builds stacking attack from other sources |
Combination | Lower by ~4 levels | Critical Rate or Attack Speed Lv. 2-3 | Most builds (recommended) |
Pure weapons reach roughly four extra levels of attack power at maximum upgrade compared to their combination counterparts. Combination weapons sacrifice that attack power in exchange for two to three levels in a secondary stat like critical rate or attack speed.
For one-handed weapons, the secondary stat bonus is level 2 instead of level 3, which accounts for the fact that dual wielding effectively doubles the benefit. For two-handed weapons, the secondary bonus is level 3.
In most cases, combination weapons are the better choice. Four extra points of raw attack power yields diminishing returns when you can already stack attack power from other sources, while an extra two or three levels of critical rate or attack speed can noticeably increase your overall damage output. Landing critical hits more often or swinging faster tends to produce a larger DPS increase in practice, especially in the endgame where fights are longer and consistency matters more.
The witches of Pywel are essential vendors who provide Abyss Gear creation, socket creation, extraction, and synthesis services. You must unlock all five to access every blueprint and synthesis recipe. Each witch starts as a disguised NPC. Help them once, and they reveal their true location where you can access their full workshop.
Witch | Title | Disguised Location | True Location | Specialty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
The Hermit | Shadow Whisperer's Cave (story unlock) | Shadow Whisperer's Cave | Basic Abyss Gear services | |
Witch of Wisdom | Twin Clover Cabin (Chapter 5 rescue) | Witchwoods, enter through gap in roof | Abyss Gear crafting and extraction | |
Witch of Kindness | Pailune, freezing by an unlit fire | Silver Wolf Mountain, house on lake | Attack Speed blueprints and synthesis | |
Witch of Humility | Pyoon, hanging by the bridge | Deonus region, inside a cave | Abyss Gear crafting and extraction | |
Witch of Strength | Near Tomaso crossroad, disguised as a beggar | Northwest of Urdavah, cliff camp | Critical Rate and Attack Power blueprints and synthesis |
Hermit Witch: Unlocked automatically during the early story when you visit the Shadow Whisperer's Cave. This is the first witch you encounter and provides basic Abyss Core services.
Elowen (Witch of Wisdom): During Chapter 5, you rescue her from the Twin Clover Cabin as part of the main story. After the rescue, her true form appears in her house at the Witchwoods. Enter through the gap in her roof near the waypoint.
Bari (Witch of Kindness): Find her in Pailune, a bit east of Wayward Woods, where she is freezing beside an unlit fire. Light the fire for her. She then moves to her true location at Silver Wolf Mountain in a house surrounded by a lake. This witch provides the attack speed blueprint, making her essential for builds that prioritize swing speed.
Lyselia (Witch of Humility): Found at Pyoon on your first visit. She is hanging by the bridge. Help her, and she relocates to a cave in the Deonus region on the eastern side of the map. Drop down from the mountain path to reach her cave entrance.
Areciel (Witch of Strength): Located near Tomaso at the crossroad. She appears as a beggar requesting one copper coin. After giving it to her, she moves northwest to Urdavah. Find her camp by the side of a cliff. This witch provides the critical rate and attack power blueprints, making her the most important witch for raw damage optimization.
Each witch sells unique blueprints that let you craft specific types of Abyss Cores and unlock synthesis recipes. Without all five, you cannot access every synthesis option. Once you have purchased all blueprints from every witch, synthesis can be performed at any witch's workshop, not just the one that sold the blueprint.
Prioritize Bari for attack speed builds and Areciel for critical rate or attack power builds. After obtaining all blueprints, you only need to visit whichever witch is most convenient.
Synthesis is the process of combining duplicate Abyss Cores to produce higher-tier versions. A Level 1 core can be combined with another Level 1 to create a Level 2, and two Level 2 cores produce a Level 3. Level 3 is the highest stable tier that does not degrade over time.
Input | Output | Notes |
|---|---|---|
2x Level 1 cores (same type) | 1x Level 2 core | Straightforward upgrade |
2x Level 2 cores (same type) | 1x Level 3 core | Highest permanent tier |
2x Level 3 cores (Special Synthesis) | Greater Abyss Gear (4% chance) | Unstable, has durability |
Visit any witch and use the extraction service to pull Abyss Cores out of equipment you no longer use. This is especially important for gear belonging to other playable characters in your party. Those characters may have powerful cores socketed into their equipment that you will never use, so extract and transfer them to your main character's gear.
Special Synthesis is the only way to create Greater Abyss Gear, which far exceeds the power of standard Level 3 cores. The catch is a roughly 4% success rate. When the synthesis fails, you still get a regular Level 3 result, but the second input core is consumed either way.
Greater Abyss Gear has dramatically stronger bonuses compared to standard cores. A Greater Critical Rate core provides Level 10 instead of the usual Level 3 maximum. A Greater Destruction core can grant up to +40% extra damage against certain enemy types, compared to roughly +8% at standard Level 3. Greater Attack Speed reaches Level 10 as well.
Stat | Standard Level 3 Maximum | |
|---|---|---|
Level 3 | Level 10 | |
Level 3 | Level 10 | |
Damage vs. Enemy Type | ~8% | Up to 40% |
The downside is durability. Greater Abyss Gear starts with 100 durability and degrades with use. Once it breaks, the gear is lost. However, degradation is slow enough that you can use Greater cores for many boss fights before they expire.
Save scumming strategy: Before attempting Special Synthesis, create a manual save using the save system. Attempt the synthesis. If you get a standard Level 3 instead of a Greater result, reload your save and try again. At a 4% success rate, expect around 25 attempts on average. The key advantage is that reloading preserves your second input core, which would otherwise be consumed on a failed attempt.
Some players prefer to use surplus Level 1 cores for Special Synthesis attempts rather than investing two Level 3 cores, since the success probability does not change based on input tier. This approach is more resource-efficient, though the Greater Abyss Gear produced from Level 1 inputs is identical in power to one made from Level 3 inputs.
Through the Lunar Judgment quest line for House Elmore in Demeniss, you can acquire three elemental spears that let you apply fire, ice, and electricity to any weapon. This is one of the strongest power upgrades available in the mid to late game.
The quest involves three separate missions against the Eastern, Western, and Southern Courts, all located around the Demeniss city area. Each court is guarded by a Full Moon Reaper boss themed around one element: fire, ice, or electricity.
Defeat each Full Moon Reaper boss.
After each fight, pick up the elemental spear the boss drops.
Enter the mansion behind each boss and clear the basement puzzle for a powerful accessory.
After collecting all three spears, visit any witch's workshop.
Extract the elemental powers from each spear.
Socket all three elemental abilities onto your main weapon or weapons.
If you are running a dual wield build, you can place all three elemental abilities on a single weapon. They trigger on light attacks, especially those following heavy attacks. A double heavy attack followed by a regular attack will proc the elemental effects two times in quick succession.
Having all three elements on one weapon means you no longer need to worry about enemy elemental resistances. Fire, ice, and electricity cover every vulnerability in the game, making this setup effective against every enemy type from mid game through the post-game content.
Unlock all five witches and purchase every available blueprint from them.
Fix your core placements. Extract any attack cores from gloves and boots. Re-socket them into your weapons.
Equip a shield for passive defense, even if you use two-handed weapons.
Upgrade your jewelry. Focus on rings and necklaces that provide critical rate or attack speed.
Start stat cap research at all three institutes. Begin with HP at Scholastone, as health has the most immediate impact on survivability.
Farm Abyss Cells above the Witchwoods and set up Abyss Seed farms at your camp.
Synthesize your cores to Level 3. Prioritize attack speed, critical rate, and destruction cores for your weapons.
Complete the Lunar Judgment quest in Demeniss for elemental spear powers.
Attempt Special Synthesis for Greater Abyss Gear when you have surplus cores. Use manual saves.
Choose combination weapons over pure attack power weapons in most cases. The secondary stats provide more overall DPS than the small attack power difference.
Do not forget to extract cores from other playable characters' equipment. Powerful cores sitting unused in a party member's inventory are wasted potential.
Check the Institute mission section in your quest log if research progress stalls. A nearby NPC usually needs a brief conversation to resume.
Leave one Abyss creature alive when farming above the Witchwoods so all enemies respawn after you fall.
Fertilizer from the Queen of Spiders quest is reusable and permanent. Apply it to your Abyss Seed farm for maximum yield.
Greater Abyss Gear degrades slowly. Use it for important boss fights rather than general exploration.
Synthesis can be done at any witch once you own the blueprint, so visit whichever witch is closest.
