Save system overview
Crimson Desert uses a dual save system that combines automatic saving with a Save Anytime manual option. This approach suits the open-world structure, letting players explore freely without worrying about losing progress while also giving full control to save before risky encounters. "Save Anytime" is listed as an accessibility feature on the official Steam store page.
Autosave
The autosave system runs continuously in the background and triggers at key moments throughout gameplay:
Trigger | Description |
|---|---|
Entering combat | The game saves when you engage enemies, preserving your state before the fight |
Exiting combat | A fresh save is created after combat ends, locking in loot and XP gains |
Collecting key items | Picking up gear, resources, or quest items triggers an autosave |
Reaching new areas | Entering a new zone, settlement, or dungeon creates a checkpoint |
Periodic interval | The game saves at regular intervals during open-world exploration |
Quest milestones | Completing objectives or reaching story beats triggers a save |
Based on preview coverage, the autosave system is described as "extremely robust." It is rare to lose more than a few minutes of progress from an unexpected death, even without manual saves.
Manual Save (Save Anytime)
Players can create a manual save at any point during gameplay through the pause menu. This feature is especially useful before:
Boss fights: Save before entering a boss arena so you can retry without replaying approach content
Branching decisions: Some quests have choices with lasting consequences. A manual save lets you explore different paths
Risky exploration: Before jumping into an unfamiliar Abyss Dungeon or hostile territory
Experimenting with builds: Save before investing Abyss Fragments into the perk tree to test different configurations
Save management
The game maintains multiple save slots. Players can keep several manual saves alongside the rolling autosave file. This lets you maintain checkpoints at different points in the story without overwriting earlier progress.
Multiple manual slots: Create named saves at different story points
Autosave slot: A dedicated slot that updates automatically and does not overwrite manual saves
Overwrite protection: The game warns before overwriting an existing manual save file
Tips for managing saves
Create a manual save before every boss. Autosave is reliable, but manual saves give you a precise restart point
Keep a "clean" save at major story milestones (e.g., before entering a new region of Pywel) in case you want to revisit choices
The autosave covers most situations well. If you die to a regular enemy, the autosave usually puts you back just moments before the fight
On console, the system-level rest mode preserves your session, but always create a manual save before turning off the console to be safe
There is no cloud save syncing between different platforms. PC, PS5, and Xbox save files are platform-specific
