There are 10 Horse mastery challenges in Crimson Desert, grouped under the Harmonious Hooves series. These challenges cover taming, mounted combat, horseback hunting, long-distance riding, and riding specific horse breeds. Completing all ten unlocks the Tamer of Legends trophy (Silver tier), described as: "Even the wildest horses yield to your steady guidance."
Horse challenges are among the most varied in the mastery category. Some can be completed early in the game, while others require access to specific horse breeds or later regions. Every challenge must be activated by picking up a Sealed Abyss Artifact before any progress counts. These artifacts appear as small stone memorials along roads and at intersections. They show up as purple icons on the minimap when you get close, and you can use the Guiding Light ability (L1+R1 on PlayStation, LB+RB on Xbox, Ctrl+Left Click on PC) to spot a blue glimmer when one is nearby.
Challenge progress only counts after you pick up the corresponding Sealed Abyss Artifact. Nothing counts retroactively. For this reason, it is worth seeking out artifacts early so progress accumulates naturally while you play through the story.
The table below lists every horse challenge in the game. Challenges 1 through 4, 7, and 9 have been fully verified through multiple sources. Challenges 5, 6, 8, and 10 have limited documentation; their entries reflect all currently known information.

Horse challenges are not available from the start. Each one must be unlocked by finding a Sealed Abyss Artifact at a specific location in the world. These artifacts sit on small stone memorials, typically found at road intersections or alongside main paths. When you approach one, a purple icon appears on your minimap. Interact with it to activate the associated challenge.
Once activated, the challenge appears in your Challenges menu under the Mastery category, filed under Horse. The objective and progress tracker become visible at that point. It is important to note that progress does not count retroactively. If a challenge requires you to tame horses, only horses tamed after picking up the artifact count toward completion.
Artifacts in the Demeniss region tend to unlock earlier challenges (1 through 6), while Hernand and the eastern regions contain artifacts for the later ones. You can pick them up in any order, though some challenges require access to regions that open later in the story.
This is the simplest horse challenge and often the first one players complete. Wild horses roam in open fields across Demeniss. Chase a wild horse on foot or while riding another mount, get close enough to see the interact prompt, then hold the interact button to leap onto its back. Once mounted, direct the left stick toward the horse's tail direction to match its movements and tire it out. After a few seconds of successful calming, you can choose to keep the horse or send it to your stable. Repeat with any second horse to complete this challenge.
Hunting from horseback works best with a bow. Ride through areas populated with deer, boar, or wolves and shoot them without dismounting. The Demeniss fields have plenty of wildlife. Five kills in five minutes is generous, so focus on areas where animals cluster rather than chasing isolated targets across the map. Keep moving between groups of animals rather than waiting for them to respawn in one spot.
This challenge requires you to defeat 20 enemies within 5 minutes while on horseback, and you cannot fully stop at any point. Ride through large bandit strongholds or enemy-dense camps using mounted melee attacks (sword swings or lance charges) or ranged attacks from horseback. The key word is 'without stopping,' so keep your horse moving at all times, even if you circle back through the same group. Fortresses and large encampments along roads in Demeniss provide enough enemies to reach 20 kills comfortably.
This is one of the longest horse challenges. You must ride from Sunset Valley all the way to Varnia without dismounting. The Fextralife description reads: "Cut through the crimson sunset and let the sound of your hooves echo from Sunset Valley to the threshold of Varnia." Make sure your horse is at a high level (ideally level 5) so it has maximum speed and stamina. Bring feed items to restore stamina during the ride if needed. Stick to the main roads for the most direct route and avoid combat encounters that could dismount you. The time limit is generous at 40 minutes, but poor pathing or getting knocked off your horse could cost you the attempt.
This challenge requires riding four specific horse breeds: Priden, Brianto, Numont, and Elantrima. Each must be ridden for at least 100 meters. If you do not own all four breeds, look for them in the wild or check stable merchants in towns. This challenge cannot be completed until you have encountered or tamed all four, which may not be possible until you have explored enough of the map. The simplest approach is to tame one of each breed from the wild and ride each in a straight line for about 100 meters. You do not need to keep them permanently; riding them for the required distance is enough.
For details on where each breed spawns, consult the Mounts article or the Horse Taming guide.
This challenge requires you to leave Delesyia at night and arrive at Pailune before sunrise, all on horseback. The timing window is tight, so preparation matters. Wait until nightfall in Delesyia before starting. Use a fast horse with high stamina; a level 5 mount is strongly recommended. The route heads northeast, so plan your path along the main roads to avoid getting lost in the dark. Bring stamina-restoring feed in case your horse tires on the way. Avoid combat encounters, as getting dismounted can waste valuable time.
Several challenges require taming wild horses. The process works as follows: chase a wild horse on foot or from another mount, get close enough to interact, then hold the interact button to leap onto its back. Once mounted, direct the left stick toward the horse's tail direction to match its movements and exhaust it. After a few seconds of successful calming, you can choose to keep the horse or send it to your stable.
Wild horses appear in open fields across Demeniss and Hernand. Higher-rarity horses are faster and harder to tame, but they also have better stats for mounted combat and long-distance riding. When taming legendary horses, make sure you have at least 6 or more stamina before the attempt, because legendary horses buck harder and drain stamina much faster than regular wild mounts.
The Harmonious Hooves series awards Abyss Artifacts and several mounted-combat passives. The confirmed passive bonuses from verified challenges include:
Companionship I (Harmonious Hooves 1): Increased horse stamina
Bond I (Harmonious Hooves 2): Improved horse-rider synergy stats
Headstart II (Harmonious Hooves 3): Bonus damage on the first mounted attack
Companionship II (Harmonious Hooves 4): Further increased horse stamina
Bond II (Harmonious Hooves 7): Further improved horse-rider synergy stats
Haste II (Harmonious Hooves 9): Increased mounted movement speed
Completing all ten challenges earns the Tamer of Legends trophy (Silver), which counts toward 100% completion. Slotting Abyss Artifacts from horse challenges into your Abyss Core grants permanent stat boosts. The Faded Abyss Artifact from Harmonious Hooves 4 functions the same way as standard Abyss Artifacts for this purpose.
Unlock artifacts early. Seek out Sealed Abyss Artifacts as soon as you enter a new region. Since progress only counts after activation, early unlocks let you accumulate progress naturally while exploring.
Use the Guiding Light. Press L1+R1 (PS), LB+RB (Xbox), or Ctrl+Left Click (PC) to activate Guiding Light, which reveals a blue shimmer near any undiscovered artifact.
Keep your horse fed. Stamina management is critical for challenges 4 and 9. Carry feed items such as apples or hay bundles and use them when your horse's stamina runs low during long rides.
Level up your horse. A level 5 horse has significantly more speed and stamina than a freshly tamed one. Riding your horse, completing tasks, and feeding it consistently raises its level over time.
Check the Mastery menu. Open the Challenges menu and navigate to the Mastery tab to see which horse challenges you have activated and your progress toward each one.
Avoid dismounting during timed challenges. Getting knocked off your horse by enemies or terrain can reset progress on challenges that require continuous riding. Stay on main roads and steer clear of hazards.
