Overview
Chops? Chops. Chop-chop.
Stone Axe is the starter chopping tool in Windrose. The recipe asks only for Stone and Wood at a fresh Workbench, so it is the first tool most players craft after setting up a base. Per its own in-game description, the axe chops regular Wood but cannot bite into Hardwood, which keeps it firmly in the early-game soft-wood tier.

Crafting
The Stone Axe has no station level requirement. A placed Workbench is enough to craft the tool on day one of a new island.
Station | Ingredients | Output | Duration |

1x Stone Axe | 1s |
Loot Sources
The Stone Axe is a craft-only tool. It is not a guaranteed drop from any chest, named mob, or POI encounter currently surfaced by the in-game loot tables; the recipe is the practical source. Because the ingredients are free in every biome, there is no meaningful reason to loot for one in the first place.
Vendor Availability
The Stone Axe is not bought or sold by any vendor. The tool is exclusively crafted at a Workbench.
Uses
Chop regular Wood from trees across the Coastal Jungle and starter islands. Soft-wood output only, per the item description.
Break wooden crates, barricades, and plank structures at Points of Interest in low-tier zones.
Emergency melee fallback with 240 Crude ATK. A dedicated Saber or Club will always out-damage it, so treat the axe as a backup weapon only.
When to Craft One
Craft a Stone Axe the moment a Workbench is placed, paired with a Stone Pickaxe using the same 3 Stone and 3 Wood ingredient pattern. Both tools are essentially free and together unlock the entire starter-biome gathering loop.
Replace the Stone Axe with a Copper Axe once the copper chain is online (a single Copper Ingot costs 1 Copper Ore at a Smelting Furnace running on Charcoal). Until Hardwood becomes a goal, however, the Stone Axe remains a perfectly valid tool for stocking Wood.
Durability and Repair
The Stone Axe has 100 durability, the lowest of any axe tier. Every swing against a tree or wooden structure consumes a point, so a single axe is spent before a large grove is fully cleared. There is no field repair for the starter tool: when it breaks you simply craft another from 3 Stone and 3 Wood at any Workbench. Higher tiers such as the Copper Axe and Iron Axe carry more durability per craft, which is a large part of why players move off the Stone Axe once metal is available.
Tier Progression
Axes in Windrose stack into four tiers. Each rung lifts durability, but ATK stays almost flat on axes, so the real reason to climb is biome access, not damage per swing.
Tier | Axe | Station | Recipe | Key Unlock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Soft Wood only | |||
2 | Workbench Lvl 1 | 5 Copper Ingot + 5 Wood | Faster Wood chopping | |
2 | Workbench Lvl 2 | 5 Foothills Iron Ingot + 5 Wood | Unlocks Hardwood | |
3 | Weaponsmith Workshop Lvl 3 | 5 Ingot Arborum + 10 Hardwood | Cursed Arborum trees |
Tips
A Stone Axe breaks well before you finish the first full-size tree grove, so keep two or three stacked in a chest near the grove you are working.
The recipe does not require a Workbench upgrade, so if a base move strands you without a tool you can place a fresh Workbench and craft another Stone Axe in under a minute.
Swamp Wood does not drop from the Stone Axe on cursed trees; bring an Iron Axe or Swamp Axe for anything past the Foothills border.
