Buccaneer-in-Training is a Bonfire combat challenge that rewards the Boar Trophy decoration. It is the most forgiving of the launch-build hunts because every boar variant counts toward the kill total, including Boar, Sow, Charging Boar, and Savage Boar. Players passing through the Coastal Jungle and Foothills during normal questing typically clear the challenge through ambient combat without needing to grind for it.

Where Boars Spawn
Boars are widespread across the launch biomes, which makes the challenge broadly compatible with whatever progression path a character is on:
Variant | Primary Biome | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Most common variant; appears in jungle clearings and along beach treelines. | ||
Larger, slower variant. Often spawns near boar groups. | ||
Aggressive variant with a tracking lunge attack. Counts toward the same total. | ||
Highest drop rate for the actual Boar Head trophy item. Many players who hit 40 kills before getting the head specifically farm Savage Boars to close out the trophy crafting requirement. |
Recommended Loadout
Boars die quickly to most weapons, so loadout is more about resource efficiency than raw damage. The Saber or any Halberd clears them in two to three hits. Avoid using firearms; the gunpowder cost outweighs the trophy reward, and bows are not present in the launch build. A Boar Whistle can summon Truffle to draw aggro during the larger Foothills boar groups, which is useful when a Charging Boar joins the fight.
Why It Is the First Trophy Most Players Earn
Two design choices make this the first trophy most characters complete. First, the kill total is generous relative to how often boars spawn during normal play; a player simply moving from the starting island into the Foothills naturally accumulates around 30 boar kills before reaching Israel Hands. Second, the trophy material drop (Boar Head) is consistent enough on Savage Boars that the final crafting requirement closes out within an hour of hitting the kill total. The combined effect is that the Boar Trophy frequently becomes the first comfort decoration that pushes a base past comfort 12 toward the 30-minute Rested-buff threshold described on the Comfort System page.
