Silly Melon
Silly Melon is a quest in Starsand Island given by Graminova, the Farmer profession mentor. The quest serves as the Intermediate Farmer certification trial and has two parts: growing a Gmax (giant) crop to harvest a Crop Fragment, then crafting a set of Fruity Furniture from the fragments and tokens you collect. The quest name is a playful nod to growing oversized melons, fitting the game's lighthearted tone. Completing this trial unlocks Sprinklers, which automatically water nearby crops and dramatically reduce daily farm maintenance.

Intermediate Farmer | Silly Melon quest: grow a Gmax crop, harvest fragments, craft Fruity Furniture, deliver to Graminova. |
Step-by-Step Walkthrough
The Intermediate Farmer trial has two parts: growing a Gmax crop (Part 1) and crafting Fruity Furniture from its fragments (Part 2). Both must be completed before turning the quest in.
Part 1: Grow a Gmax Crop
Step 1: Talk to Graminova
After completing the Junior Farmer certification, speak to Graminova at or near the Happiness Seed Shop in Starsand Town. He assigns the Silly Melon quest, asking you to grow a giant crop and craft furniture from the harvested fragments.
Step 2: Buy Seeds
Purchase 9 seeds of a Gmax-eligible crop from the Happiness Seed Shop. Each seed costs 200 coins, so a full set of 9 costs 1,800 coins. The crop you need depends on the current season:
Season | Gmax Crop | Seed Cost (each) | Growth Time | Seeds Needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Spring | 200 coins | 4 days | 9 | |
Summer | 200 coins | 4 days | 9 | |
Autumn | 200 coins | 4 days | 9 | |
Winter | 200 coins | 4 days | 9 |
Players typically encounter this quest during Summer since early-game progression takes about one season, making Watermelon the most common choice. However, you can buy seeds for any season's crop year-round and stockpile them. If you miss the current season, you can wait for the next one or use Season Tokens to force the correct season.
Step 3: Plant in a 3x3 Grid
Till a 3x3 grid of farmland plots on your farm using your Hoe. Plant exactly 9 seeds of the same crop type in this grid formation. All 9 plots must contain the same crop for the Gmax mutation to have a chance of occurring.
Step 4: Water, Fertilize, and Wait
Water all 9 plots thoroughly. For the best chance of triggering a Gmax mutation, apply Gmax Fertilizer III to the center plot of your 3x3 grid. Only one plot needs the fertilizer for the bonus to apply to the entire grid. Gmax Fertilizer III is available at the Happiness Seed Shop for 320 coins per 5 bags and increases the mutation probability by 15%. Note that Gmax Fertilizer III cannot be stacked with other fertilizer types on the same plot.
All 9 plants must reach full maturity at approximately the same time for the mutation chance to activate. Growth takes about 4 in-game days. Keep all 9 plants synchronized by watering them on the same schedule and removing any weeds promptly. Weeds can delay individual plants and break synchronization, preventing the mutation.
Step 5: Harvest the Gmax Crop with an Axe
When the Gmax mutation succeeds, the 3x3 grid merges into a single giant crop covering the entire area instead of 9 individual plants. Giant crops cannot be harvested by hand. Equip your Axe or Hatchet and chop the giant crop. It takes multiple swings, but once you break it, you receive a bounty of items:
Seed | Details |
|---|---|
Crop Fragments | (e.g., Watermelon Fragment if you grew Watermelons). These are the key items needed for the quest. |
Regular produce | (more than the 9 individual crops would have yielded) |
Seeds | for replanting |
Gmax Tokens | (used alongside fragments to craft Fruity Furniture) |
Important: Gmax growth is not guaranteed on every attempt. The base mutation chance without fertilizer is estimated at roughly 40%. With Gmax Fertilizer III applied to the center tile, this increases by 15%. Some players report needing up to four attempts before their first successful Gmax crop. If the mutation does not occur, harvest the normal crops, collect your produce, and try again with a new batch of 9 seeds.
Part 2: Craft Fruity Furniture
After harvesting your Gmax crop, you need to craft a matching Fruity Furniture set from the crop fragments and Gmax Tokens you collected. This is the second part of the Intermediate Farmer trial.
Step 6: Buy Blueprints from Lex Woodworks
Visit Alex's Lex Woodworks shop. Switch to the Fruity Furniture tab in the shop menu. Purchase blueprints for a matching fruit Sofa and a matching Low Table (Tea Table). The furniture set must match the type of crop you grew. For example, if you grew Watermelons, buy the Watermelon Sofa and Watermelon Tea Table blueprints.
Season | Crop Grown | Furniture Set |
|---|---|---|
Spring | Pineapple Sofa + Pineapple Tea Table | |
Summer | Watermelon Sofa + Watermelon Tea Table | |
Autumn | Pumpkin Sofa + Pumpkin Tea Table | |
Winter | Winter Melon Sofa + Winter Melon Tea Table |
Step 7: Craft the Furniture
Go to your Worktable and craft both furniture pieces using the crop fragments and Gmax Tokens from your harvest. You may need to grow multiple Gmax crops if a single harvest does not yield enough fragments. Each Sofa requires approximately 5 crop fragments.
Step 8: Deliver to Graminova
Bring the completed Sofa and Tea Table to Graminova at the Happiness Seed Shop. Delivering the furniture set completes the Silly Melon quest and earns you the Intermediate Farmer Certification.
Rewards
Completing the Silly Melon quest grants significant upgrades to your farming capabilities:
Reward | Description |
|---|---|
Intermediate Farmer Certification | Advances your Farmer profession to the Intermediate tier, opening the path to Senior Farmer. |
Sprinkler Blueprints | Sprinklers automatically water surrounding crop plots around the clock. Place them between tiles (not on them) for optimal coverage. Higher-tier Sprinklers with larger ranges unlock at later Farmer tiers. |
Intermediate-Tier Seeds Unlocked | Fruit tree saplings (Apple, Banana, Orange, Lychee) plus Corn, Blueberry, Strawberry, and Cherry Tomato become available at the Seed Shop. |
Gmax Fertilizer III Purchasable | 320 coins per 5 bags. Increases Gmax mutation probability by 15%. Available from the Happiness Seed Shop after certification. |
Ripening Fertilizer III Purchasable | 180 coins per 5 bags. Instantly advances crop growth by 25 hours. Available from the Happiness Seed Shop after certification. |
Gmax Crop Mechanics
Gmax crops (short for Gigantamax) are a special farming mechanic in Starsand Island. Understanding how they work is key to completing this quest efficiently.
Mechanic | Details |
|---|---|
3x3 Grid Required | Exactly 9 seeds of the same Gmax-eligible crop must be planted in a contiguous 3x3 formation on tilled farmland. |
Synchronized Growth | All 9 plants must reach full maturity at approximately the same time for the mutation chance to activate. Weeds and uneven watering can desynchronize growth. |
Base Mutation Chance | Approximately 40% per attempt without fertilizer, according to community testing. Some players report needing up to 4 attempts before their first success. |
Gmax Fertilizer III Boost | Applying Gmax Fertilizer III to the center plot of the 3x3 grid adds +15% to the mutation chance. Only one plot needs the fertilizer. Cannot be stacked with other fertilizer types. |
Axe Required for Harvest | Giant crops cannot be picked by hand. You must use an Axe or Hatchet and chop multiple times. The harvest yields more items than 9 individual crops would. |
Seasonal Lock | Each Gmax crop type is locked to a specific season. You can buy seeds year-round, but the crop must be planted and grown during its designated season. |
Harvest Yields | Crop fragments, regular produce (bonus yield), seeds for replanting, and Gmax Tokens. |
Tips and Strategies
Tip | Details |
|---|---|
Always use Gmax Fertilizer III | The +15% mutation boost is well worth the 320-coin investment. Apply it to the center tile of your 3x3 grid before the crops mature. |
Plant multiple 3x3 grids at once | If you have the space and coins, planting two or three 3x3 grids in the same season gives you more chances at a successful mutation. Each grid operates independently. |
Use the reroll trick | If your crops reach maturity without mutating, try harvesting a single crop from the 3x3 grid and replanting that spot. When the replacement matures and catches up to the others, it provides another chance for the mutation to trigger. |
Keep crops synchronized | Water all 9 plants on the same schedule and remove weeds as soon as they appear. If some plants grow faster than others, the mutation window may close. Apply fertilizer evenly if using Ripening Fertilizer (but remember you cannot stack it with Gmax Fertilizer). |
Use Ripening Fertilizer to speed attempts | If you are not using Gmax Fertilizer III, you can apply Ripening Fertilizer III (180 coins/5 bags) to shorten the 4-day growth period and cycle through attempts faster. However, you cannot use both Gmax and Ripening fertilizers on the same plot simultaneously. |
Buy extra seeds | Purchase more than 9 seeds in case your first attempt fails. Having 18 or 27 seeds (for 2 or 3 attempts) prevents trips back to the shop mid-season. |
Planting and watering cost zero stamina | Only initial land clearing consumes stamina, so you can maintain large farming operations without draining your energy bar. |
Troubleshooting
Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
Quest completion bug (fixed) | Prior to update 0.2.1185, the quest could get stuck when handing in melons to Graminova, with the quest status never advancing. This was patched in the February 19, 2026 update. |
Gmax crop not forming | Ensure all 9 plants are the same crop, planted in a contiguous 3x3 grid with no gaps, and that weeds are not disrupting synchronization. Apply Gmax Fertilizer III to the center plot. Try again if the first attempt fails; the mutation is RNG-based. |
Wrong season | If the current season does not match any Gmax crop you have seeds for, wait for the next season or use Season Tokens to change the season. Seeds can be purchased year-round regardless of the current season. |
Not enough fragments | A single Gmax harvest may not provide enough crop fragments to craft both furniture pieces. Grow additional Gmax crops in the same or following season to collect more fragments and Gmax Tokens. |
Cannot find Fruity Furniture blueprints | The blueprints are sold at Alex's Lex Woodworks shop, not the Happiness Seed Shop. Look for the Fruity Furniture tab in Alex's shop menu. |
Gmax Fertilizer not stacking | Gmax Fertilizer III cannot be combined with other fertilizer types on the same plot. If you previously applied Ripening or Yield Fertilizer, plant a new batch and apply only Gmax Fertilizer III. |
