The Abyss

Correct recorded Flight and skill-learning routes, distinguish character Links and the Sanctum quest groups.
The Abyss is a mysterious realm of floating sky islands high above the continent of Pywel. Described by Pearl Abyss as "the cradle of providence," it is central to Crimson Desert's story, quests, and progression systems. The Abyss is not inherently evil, but its growing imbalance sends fragments crashing into Pywel, and those who exploit its power for chaos corrupt its influence over the broader world.

The explorable sky islands, sometimes called the Aerial Abyss, feature unique puzzles inspired by mechanics from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This puts emphasis on environmental interaction and creative problem-solving over combat. Players reach the Abyss through mystical gates and return by free-falling back to the surface with Flight. Older preview notes used the name Crow's Wing for the gliding ability; the skill guide records Kliff learning Flight during Chapter 1: Traces.
The Abyss is at the heart of Crimson Desert's central conflict. A "mysterious realm's growing imbalance sends fragments crashing into Pywel," warping the land and attracting those hungry for power. Fragments of the Abyss have been scattered throughout the world, "often falling into the hands of those seeking wealth or power, or those intent on spreading malice."

The Black Bears are among those who exploit the Abyss's power for destructive ends. However, the Abyss itself is a neutral force: the corruption comes from how people choose to use its fragments and energy.
Restoring balance to the Abyss and confronting those who exploit its power become key elements of the narrative. This mission was originally entrusted to Gian, the former leader of the Greymanes, suggesting Gian "was far more than just a regional leader and may have been chosen to protect the world itself." After Gian's death, this mission passes to Kliff, who must collect the scattered fragments and restore balance to Pywel.
At the center of the Abyss lies the Library of Providence, a location described as being "at the centre of all worlds" where "every book is a world." The Library is guarded by Alustin, an enigmatic alchemist figure who is its keeper. Alustin explains that chaos has been introduced into the Library and must be stopped, or "all of the worlds will face annihilation."
There are beings who plan to bring "everything to nothingness," representing an existential threat that extends beyond the political conflicts on Pywel's surface. The Library of Providence adds a meta-narrative layer to Crimson Desert's story, suggesting the stakes extend beyond a single continent.
Players access the Abyss through mystical gates. The Steam store page describes how players can "go through mystical gates to find yourself in the mysterious realm known as the Abyss." The narrative trigger occurs in the city of Hernand, where Kliff is first guided to the Abyss early in the story.
Additional Abyss islands can be reached through special portals that open after discovering rare artifacts scattered across Pywel. This means that exploration of the surface world directly unlocks more Abyss content.
During a hands-on preview of Crimson Desert, the Abyss segments were highlighted as some of the best moments of the experience. Kliff's visits to the Abyss involve navigating a series of floating ruins far above the surface of Pywel. These visually striking environments provide a jaw-dropping view of the vast landscape below and serve as both story-driven locations and gameplay arenas.
The Abyss sections introduce puzzle platforming challenges that test the player's mastery of the new Abyss powers. These powers include Force-style telekinetic abilities that allow Kliff to manipulate objects in the environment, as well as a Force Jump ability that propels him off the ground to reach otherwise inaccessible platforms. The puzzle design emphasizes creative use of these powers to progress through the floating ruins.
Earlier preview notes called progression resources Abyss Catalysts; that terminology remains unverified as the current resource name. The preview described them as skill points that can be spent to upgrade stats and unlock new abilities, including improved jumping height, a suplex wrestling move, and more advanced sword strikes. These upgrades expand Kliff's combat and traversal toolkit as the game progresses.
Two important characters are associated with the Abyss:
Character | Role | Description |
|---|---|---|
Keeper of the Library of Providence | An enigmatic alchemist who guards the Library and explains the cosmic threat to Kliff. Ally in the fight to restore balance. | |
Guardian of the Abyss | A figure clad in white who is allied with Alustin. Earlier notes say this figure granted Kliff a Crow's Wing gliding ability in Chapter 5 (Guest Unbidden). The documented skill unlock is Flight during Chapter 1: Traces, after speaking to the Woman in White; the older chapter attribution is not the current unlock route. |
The Abyss is "a separate dimension filled with puzzles inspired by mechanics from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, heavily emphasizing environmental interaction and creative problem-solving." The emphasis is on "peaceful discovery and puzzle-solving" rather than heavy combat.
Players explore floating islands, "scouring these floating islands and using an Ultrahand-like tool to align fragments, with impressive length and breadth and a fair amount of puzzle-solving." The Abyss islands function as structured puzzle environments where solutions use the player's equipment and abilities as a "language" for solving challenges.
Mechanic | Description |
|---|---|
Fragment Alignment | Using an Ultrahand-like tool to align Abyss fragments on floating platforms |
Pathfinding Grids | Navigating grid-based puzzles that require finding the correct path |
Reactive Tiles | Tiles that change state when stepped on or interacted with |
Equipment-Based Solutions | Puzzles that require specific loadout configurations to solve |
Progressive Difficulty | Later islands add more layers to the rules, making problems harder to solve without blocking progress |

Players use several abilities for puzzle-solving within the Abyss and related environments:
Ethereal appendages: Manifesting powers to open heavy doors and interact with Abyss mechanisms
Psychic lifting: Artifact-granted telekinesis for moving objects and clearing obstacles
Axiom Bracelet: Elemental abilities (fire, ice, lightning) that serve as puzzle tools
Players return from the Abyss by free-falling from the floating islands back down to the surface of Pywel. During the 50-minute gameplay preview, Kliff was shown "freefalling through the sky before summoning some sort of crow glider." The Crow's Wing name and a Chapter 5 attribution were associated in earlier notes with White Crow the Witch. That chapter attribution is superseded by the skill guide: Kliff learns Flight during Chapter 1: Traces. The earlier description of a transformation into "a beaked creature with a cool cape" remains preview wording, not an additional Chapter 5 prerequisite. Flight is used for descending from the Abyss and traversing the open world.
The Abyss is the primary source of Abyss Artifacts (also called Abyss Fragments), which are the core progression currency in Crimson Desert. Instead of a traditional XP-based leveling system, character growth comes from collecting these fragments and investing them in the Abyss Tree (accessed via the Start menu under Progression).
The Abyss Tree is a web-like skill tree with two types of nodes:
Node Type | Function |
|---|---|
Core Nodes | Provide stat increases: Health, Stamina, and other base attributes (similar to Breath of the Wild's spirit orb system) |
Branch Nodes | Unlock actual combat techniques and abilities |
An earlier generic account required the player to observe a technique and then spend an Abyss Artifact to lock it in. That is not a universal sequence: the documented Evasive Roll route lets Kliff observe Kailok in Chapter 2 or use a separate one-Artifact shortcut; Damiane and Oongka have it by default. The older approximately two-second hold remains an unverified timing report; follow the actual observation prompt. Version 1.00.03 reduced skill observation to once, which concerns the observation count rather than a universal hold duration. Version 1.04.00 also allows Artifacts to be earned when observing a skill already acquired with Artifacts, so paid-first and observation-first routes must not be conflated.
Earlier hands-on coverage described reclaiming Artifacts for a small cost after unlocking a hub option and estimated roughly 8-10 techniques in the first 45 minutes. These remain preview-era cost and pace reports, not guaranteed current reset terms or a timed progression target. The older respec guide describes Reset All with one Faded Abyss Artifact; later character-specific Link refunds and the separate Version 2.00.00 migration are explained below.
Version 2.00.00 retains Abyss Artifacts: when one character uses them to learn a skill, equivalent Abyss Links are granted to the other playable characters. Each character spends their own Links, and resetting that individual progression refunds the Links they used. Separately, the first launch after the update resets prior progression and refunds resources previously spent, including Artifacts. That one-time migration is not proof that every ordinary reset refunds every historical resource or that Artifacts have been removed.

Hazardous Areas | Found in dangerous locations like poison mist zones |
Earlier exploration notes described locating fallen Abyss Fragments by reflecting light off Kliff's sword. The same older account associated Traces of the Abyss with fast travel points; the claim that every Trace is a portal is not independently established. The fast-travel guide distinguishes stepping on a Nexus from completing a Cresset puzzle.
The Abyss's growing imbalance causes fragments to rain down on Pywel in a manner compared to Tears of the Kingdom's sky island debris. These fragments "warp the land and attract those hungry for power," creating localized areas of Abyss influence across the continent. The scattered fragments serve as both exploration objectives and the primary fuel for character progression.
It falls to Kliff, the Greymanes, and their allies to collect these fragments and restore balance to the world of Pywel. This cosmic mission adds a layer of urgency beyond the political and factional conflicts on the surface.
The Abyss exists "high in the clouds" and contains floating islands and elevated ruins. From the Abyss, players can look down across Pywel and see "miles of detailed, playable space visible in every direction with no pop-in." The realm has an ethereal, otherworldly quality distinct from the grounded medieval fantasy of Pywel's surface.
The Abyss contains several distinct floating islands and structures, each with its own puzzles, lore connections, and Abyss Artifacts to collect. Players unlock additional locations as they progress through the main story and discover portals across Pywel. Once an island's puzzle is solved, a spire or totem activates and spawns an Abyss Artifact. The following are key locations within the Abyss realm.

Location | Description | |
|---|---|---|
A large domed building at the end of a walkway surrounded by garden hedges, located above the Hernand region. This is one of the first Abyss islands the player encounters. | Connected to Alustin, who oversees the archive and introduces Axiom Force. Players use Axiom Force to spin floor plates and align circuits to gain entry. Contains the Polar Opposites quest puzzles. | |
A transitional passageway between Abyss islands. The corridor is the starting location for the Realm of Uncertainty quest during the Prologue chapter (Dead of Night). | Features environmental puzzles involving reactive tiles and pathfinding grids. Connects multiple Abyss islands and is a navigation hub between them. | |
A large open area with a central pit surrounded by trees growing in a circular pattern. This is the location where White Crow first reveals herself to Kliff. | Contains an Abyss Nexus fast travel point. White Crow descends onto the pathway as a talking bird before transforming into a woman in white and granting the Crow's Wing gliding ability. | |
A remote island reached by crossing a bridge and teleporter from the Ethereal Pathway. Features crumbling platforms, waterfalls, and floating terrain that players must navigate carefully. | Accessed via the Path of Providence. Players ride floating platforms and hop across collapsing bridges to reach the main island. Contains challenging traversal puzzles that test gliding and jumping abilities. | |
A contemplative Abyss location connected to the Spire of Insight, located directly south of Pororin Village in Hernand. | Contains the Gold Bar alchemical formula as a reward. Puzzle completion activates a spire and spawns an Abyss Artifact. One of the more lore-rich locations in the Abyss. |
Additional Abyss islands become accessible as Kliff progresses through the main quest and explores the surface. The older account called each Trace of the Abyss both a fast-travel point and a gateway; it is not a verified rule that every surface Trace opens another island.
Sixteen recorded Sanctums comprise fifteen in the four Witch faction quest groups and one story Sanctum, Mortification in Chapter 9. Earlier notes link their corruption and cleansing to the Abyss's imbalance. The earlier account that White Crow assigns all sixteen after Chapter 5 is unverified. The examples below are a partial directory; earlier notes describe each site as a challenge dungeon combining combat with environmental puzzles. Rewards depend on the specific quest record rather than a universal promise of a weapon and Artifact from every Sanctum.
The four recorded Witch groups cover four Sanctums for Wisdom, four for Kindness, four for Humility and three for Strength: fifteen in total. The separate Chapter 9 Veiled Witch sequence includes Fragments of Darkness with the objective to restore power at the Sanctum of Mortification, then Pursuit Beyond the Veil and Black Witch. Mortification is a story restoration objective, not merely an item to collect or another entry assigned by the same faction witch.
Sanctum | Region | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Pywel (varies) | An earlier unverified account promised a two-handed weapon and associated the quest with White Crow. The Witch of Wisdom record instead lists Blueprint I: Enhanced Kuku Pot and Blueprint I: Kuku Spear for this cleansing objective; it does not independently establish that older weapon reward. | |
Pywel (varies) | Features multi-stage combat trials where enemies grow stronger with each wave. | |
An older unverified bearing places this southeast of Hernand. The regional guide instead records it far west of the City of Hernand, so those bearing reports conflict. Earlier local notes also describe a Sealed Abyss Artifact near its entrance. | ||
Pywel (varies) | Puzzle-heavy Sanctum requiring use of Axiom Force abilities to progress through locked chambers. | |
Pywel (varies) | One of the more combat-focused Sanctums with tougher enemy encounters and environmental hazards. | |
Pywel (varies) | An earlier unverified account called this the first Sanctum after unlocking White Crow. The documented Witch of Wisdom route includes Temperance among four Sanctums. The local puzzle involves defeating enemies, finding power cubes, and solving pillar puzzles to cleanse it. |
Sanctum objectives vary by quest. The Witch of Wisdom walkthrough allows its four cleansings in any order; that does not remove main-story gates from the separate Chapter 9 Mortification objective or establish one universal order rule for all sixteen. Earlier notes describe combat, energy sources and mechanism alignment as common elements. See Abyss Dungeons for the full list of Abyss-related challenge content.
Scattered across the world map of Pywel, Mysterious Energies appear as question mark (?) icons on the map. Each one marks a potential location of an Abyss Nexus or Abyss Cresset, both of which serve as fast travel points.
Open the map and look for question mark icons scattered across regions you have explored.
Aim your crosshair over the question mark symbol on the map to track the location.
When you are near the energy source, your mini-map shows whether it is above or below your current position, which helps when navigating vertical terrain.
Not every Mysterious Energy leads to a fast travel point, but checking them is always worth the detour. Possible discoveries include:
Abyss Nexus: A full fast travel node that appears on your world map once discovered. These are the primary method of quick travel across Pywel.
Abyss Cresset: A secondary fast travel point. Cressets function similarly to Nexus points but tend to be placed in more remote areas.
Once you arrive at a Mysterious Energy location and discover what it contains, the question mark icon disappears from the map permanently. Systematically exploring these markers is one of the most efficient ways to build out your fast travel network early in the game.
Patch 1.13.00, whose notes are dated July 3, 2026 UTC, lets Oongka and Damiane enter the Abyss, which was previously undertaken with Kliff. The Memory Fragment locations for several rematchable bosses (Corrupted Caliburn, Goyen, Draven the Crowcaller, and Clockwork White Horn) were changed to accommodate the additional characters. See Boss Rematches.
