Mistshard Cave

Correct source-positive location, skill, equipment and quest details while preserving older unverified route precision.
Mistshard Cave is a hidden waterfall cave located in the Smoking Lands area of the Demeniss region, north of Deadfire Mountain. A massive rock blocks the cave entrance behind a cascading waterfall, and through the hazy air, occasional glints of gold spark curiosity about what lies beyond. The cave is one of the most rewarding exploration targets in Demeniss because it holds the Frostcursed Plate Armor, a chest armor piece with recorded Ice Resistance Lv.7, distinct from the higher Lv.10 effect on Kuku Ice-Resistant Armor, along with plentiful Gold Ore deposits and a Refined Palmar Pill.
Reaching the treasure requires two specific combat skills. Players must use Stab to pierce through the waterfall and then Force Palm to shatter the rock wall blocking the inner chamber. The armor guide calls Stab default for all three playable characters. That does not establish Force Palm as a default skill for all three: Kliff's skill guide learns it by observing during Chapter 1 Traces, and exact character inputs should follow the current control preset.

Mistshard Cave sits in the northern reaches of Demeniss, within the Smoking Lands. The Smoking Lands are characterized by volcanic haze, reduced visibility, and jagged terrain. To find the cave, head north past Deadfire Mountain and look for a waterfall flowing down the rocky cliffside. The cave entrance is concealed directly behind this waterfall.
The area around the cave falls within the snow biome of Demeniss, where cold temperatures and ice-themed enemies are common. Having some level of Ice Resistance before venturing here is recommended, though the irony is that the cave itself contains one of the best Ice Resistance armor pieces in the game.
A fast travel point exists nearby and becomes available after reaching a certain point in the main story. This makes return trips to mine Gold Ore significantly more convenient.
Entering Mistshard Cave requires two steps, each using a specific combat skill. The guide establishes default Stab for Kliff, Damiane and Oongka, not a universal default Force Palm unlock.
Approach the waterfall and stand at the edge of the water. Use the Stab skill (hold the armed skill button and release) to lunge through the waterfall. This is the same technique used to enter other waterfall caves throughout Pywel. If you have not entered a waterfall cave before, the key is to face the waterfall directly and execute the Stab while standing close to the falling water.
After passing through the waterfall, you will find yourself in a narrow passage blocked by a large stone formation. Use Force Palm to shatter this rock. The rubble clears instantly, revealing the main chamber of the cave beyond.
For character scope, Kliff's Force Palm guide specifies observing the hologram during Traces in Chapter 1. The later patch gives Damiane's Shield Toss and Oongka's Scatter Shot the same effect as Kliff's Force Palm, but that is not a direct test of every character's action against this particular boulder. Use the equipped character's current bindings instead of treating the older R3 or R1-and-Triangle instructions as universal.
The inner chamber of Mistshard Cave contains a treasure chest and several mineable ore deposits scattered across the room.
The treasure chest holds the Frostcursed Plate Armor, a unique chest armor piece and one of the five components of the Frost Cursed Plate set. Its Ice Resistance Lv.7 is not a universal highest-single-piece value: the separate Kuku Ice-Resistant Armor record explicitly lists Lv.10.

The base Frostcursed Plate Armor record gives fixed Defense 14, Movement Speed Lv.2 and Ice Resistance Lv.7; the guide lists no installed Abyss Gear. The blacksmith route is item-specific. A Unique label is not by itself proof of an exact slot capacity or a universal rule that every Unique item cannot be refined. Keep this base armor separate from its crafted Kuku Ice-Resistant Armor variant and compare cold-protection effects without assuming automatic set stacking.
The base armor also has a documented Witch crafting alternative. The guide directs players to finish Areciel's Witch of Strength questline, raise her Trust to 100, buy the Blueprint: Frostcursed Plate Armor at a quoted 500 Silver, Examine it, then use Craft Abyss Gear → Special Equipment at a Witch. That is the guide's price and unlock route, not a guarantee of every current shop state. The item record lists three Frostward III, three Abyss Cells, two Platinum, ten Epidote and any two eligible sealed Power Cores total: Gate of Collapse, Ore of Resipiscence, Casket of Illusions, Crown of Shadows or Spire of Defiance. The guide lists Kliff while the record lists all characters; keep that wearer discrepancy separate rather than silently select one.
The separate Kuku recipe uses one Enhanced Kuku Pot, one Frostcursed Plate Armor, one Power Core - Crown of Shadows and one Core of Exaltation after Kuku Gear Special Blueprint. Its recorded refinement starts at Defense 4/Movement Speed Lv.2 and reaches Defense 38/Movement Speed Lv.3 at +10; Ice Resistance Lv.10 is explicit. Crafting the variant is not a promise of an immediately refined +10 item or an established socket count. The charged state lasts ten seconds and responds to attacks received, so it is not a permanent bonus-trigger assumption.
The cave interior is lined with Gold Ore nodes. Multiple deposits are spread across the chamber walls and floor, making Mistshard Cave one of the best single locations in the game for collecting Gold Ore. Gold Ore can be smelted into Gold Bars at a crafting station, which are used in various high-value recipes and can be sold for a significant amount of currency.
Because a fast travel point is accessible nearby, players can return to Mistshard Cave repeatedly to farm Gold Ore. The deposits respawn over time, making this a reliable long-term source of gold for crafting and trading.
In addition to the armor and ore, the cave contains a Refined Palmar Pill. The Refined Palmar Pill formula describes full health restored through revival on the spot. This is a manual revival item, not a passive or automatic heal during ordinary exploration; the older rarity and crafting-difficulty ranking are not independently established by the formula.
For the Refined Palmar Pill recipe, learn Alchemy Formula: Refined Palmar Pill and combine one Palmar Leaf, one Palmar Beetle, one Water and any one listed medicinal ingredient: Ginseng, Bear's Gallbladder or Long Horn. That formula's full-Health revival differs from the base Palmar Pill's separate recipe and 30%-Health revival; it does not establish a passive automatic recovery effect or verify every earlier cave-pickup coordinate.
The Frostcursed Plate Armor found here is one of five pieces in the complete Frost Cursed Plate set. All five pieces are scattered across the Demeniss region in similar hidden locations. Collecting the full set provides substantial Ice Resistance and makes exploring the frozen northern territories far more manageable.
Piece | Location |
|---|---|
Plate Helm | |
Plate Armor (Chest) | Mistshard Cave (this location) |
Plate Cloak | Well of Tragedy Grotto |
Chattering Rocks | |
Plate Boots | Lunar Spirit Grotto |
Each piece requires interacting with the environment to access, whether through breaking walls, burning vines, or passing through waterfalls. None of the pieces require defeating a boss, making the full set one of the most accessible high-tier armor collections in the game.
Bring a pickaxe or mining tool to harvest the Gold Ore deposits. There are enough nodes in the cave to fill a large portion of your inventory.
The Stab skill works on all waterfall entrances throughout Pywel. If you have trouble entering, make sure you are facing the waterfall directly and standing close to the falling water before executing the skill.
Force Palm is also used to break destructible walls in other locations. Look for cracks or unusual stone formations as visual cues.
If you are building for Ice Resistance, prioritize picking up the Frostcursed Plate Armor early. Its listed Ice Resistance Lv.7 can help in cold regions, but the separate Kuku variant explicitly records Lv.10; do not treat seven as the global maximum.
The base Frostcursed Plate Armor has a fixed recorded stat card and no installed Abyss Gear in the guide. The exact capacity is unverified; plan a separate Kuku craft and subsequent refinement rather than assume the base pickup immediately has the Kuku +10 stats.
Consider collecting all five Frost Cursed Plate pieces in one trip through Demeniss. The locations are spread across the region but can be visited in a loop without too much backtracking.
The Smoking Lands have reduced visibility from volcanic haze. Listen for the sound of the waterfall to locate the cave entrance when visual navigation is difficult.
The hidden chest tucked inside Mist Shard Cave is the open-world source of the chest piece in the Frost Cursed Plate set. The cave entrance is behind a waterfall on the far side of a wide body of water adjacent to the Spire of Frost, and a fake rock just inside the entry needs to be broken with Force Palm (R3) before the path to the chest opens.
Frostcursed Plate Armor with Ice Resistance Lv.7 and a fixed recorded stat card. Earlier notes called its crafted variant Kuku Armor. The separate Kuku Ice-Resistant Armor record documents its own refinement curve; exact slot capacity is not established by an empty installed-gear list.
The earlier loose Refined Palmar Pill pickup near the chest and the gloves and boots grottos remain route reports. Its formula describes full-Health revival, not a passive consumable effect or automatic revival.
Several gold ore mining nodes scattered around the cave walls. Worth a quick mining detour after looting the chest.
Look for the small stone stack on the riverbank to confirm the waterfall is enterable. Stab through with R1 and Triangle, then break the fake rock just inside with Force Palm. The chest is around the next corner and lights up the chamber.
