Does Crimson Desert Have Character Creation?
No. Crimson Desert does not include a character creation system. Despite being developed by Pearl Abyss, the studio behind Black Desert Online (which features one of the most detailed character creators in gaming), Crimson Desert takes a different approach. You play as pre-written protagonists with fixed identities, facial structures, body types, and voice acting.
The game follows the narrative-driven model of titles like The Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2. The three playable characters are Kliff (sword-and-shield mercenary leader), Damiane (ranged-melee hybrid with pistols and rapier), and Oongka (orc bruiser wielding an axe). Each has their own personality, backstory, and combat identity that is central to the story.
What Customization Is Available?
While full character creation is absent, Crimson Desert offers a generous set of appearance customization options through two facilities in the Greymane Camp: the Barber Shop and the Dyehouse.
Barber Shop (Eric's Tent)
The Barber Shop is located in a tent near the general store in the Greymane Camp, east of the ranch and farm area. Eric, the camp's barber, offers the following customization for all three playable characters:
Customization Option | Details |
|---|---|
Hairstyles | At least 6 styles available for Kliff. Each character has a unique set of hairstyle options. |
Hair Color | An extensive color palette ranging from natural tones (white, gray, brown, amber, red) to vivid colors (green, blue, purple, pink, crimson). |
Beard and Facial Hair | Available for Kliff and Oongka. You can adjust mustache thickness, beard length, and overall style. Damiane cannot modify facial hair. |
Eyebrows | Style and color adjustable for all three characters. |
Face Tattoos | At least 13 face tattoo designs confirmed for Oongka. Kliff and Damiane have their own sets of face tattoo options. |
Body Tattoos | Available for all characters. Visibility depends on how much skin your equipped armor exposes. Oongka's exposed torso makes body tattoos particularly visible. |
All barber services cost in-game currency. There are no microtransactions for cosmetic changes.
Dyehouse (Theoric's Workshop)
The Dyehouse is run by Theoric and is also located in the Greymane Camp area. It allows you to recolor equipment with granular, per-section control:
Personal Armor and Weapons: Individual armor pieces and weapons can be dyed. Each piece has multiple sections that accept separate colors.
Horse Gear: Your horse's caparisons and armor can be recolored to match your character's look.
War Robot Armor: The mechanical construct's armor plates can also be customized with dyes.
Color Palette: The dye palette mirrors the hair color palette for visual cohesion. All dye materials come from exploration and crafting, not microtransactions.
What Cannot Be Changed
The following elements are permanently fixed and cannot be modified:
Facial structure, bone structure, and facial features
Body proportions, height, and build
Voice acting and speech patterns
Species (human for Kliff and Damiane, orc for Oongka)
Gender
Character name and identity
Comparison to Black Desert Online
Players familiar with Pearl Abyss's previous title, Black Desert Online, might expect a similarly deep character creator. Black Desert Online is renowned for its granular sliders that let players sculpt nearly every aspect of a character's face and body. Crimson Desert intentionally forgoes this in favor of fixed, story-driven protagonists. The customization that does exist (hair, tattoos, dye) is still more extensive than many RPGs with preset characters offer.
