inZOI is a life simulation game developed by inZOI Studio and published by KRAFTON, Inc., the South Korean gaming company best known for PUBG: Battlegrounds. The game launched in Early Access on Steam on March 28, 2025, at a price of $39.99 USD, which includes all expansions and updates until the full version 1.0 release. Built on Unreal Engine 5, inZOI features a photorealistic visual style that sets it apart from other games in the life simulation genre.
In inZOI, the player takes on the role of an intern at AR COMPANY, a virtual reality firm tasked with managing a neighborhood of virtual people called "Zois." These Zois live their lives with their own free will, performing actions and building relationships based on their personalities and life experiences. The game offers deep customization, open-ended gameplay, and an AI-driven character system called Smart Zoi that produces emergent storytelling.
inZOI Studio is an internal development team within KRAFTON, Inc., headquartered in South Korea. KRAFTON is a major global gaming company that also publishes PUBG: Battlegrounds, The Callisto Protocol, and other titles. The studio was formed to develop inZOI as a next-generation life simulation game.
The game's development was led by Hyungjun "Kjun" Kim, who serves as Producer, Director, and CEO of inZOI Studio. Kim brings over 15 years of game development experience, including key roles at NCSOFT (where he served as Producer for AION and Executive Director) and KRAFTON (where he was Associate Director for PUBG: Battlegrounds). The idea for inZOI came from Kim's love for life simulation games, which he often played with his son. Kim has acknowledged that developing a life simulation of this scale was an "entirely new frontier" and a significant challenge, drawing on his background in MMORPGs to build the game's expansive open world.
inZOI is one of the first life simulation games built on Unreal Engine 5. This engine choice is responsible for the game's standout visual fidelity -- character models feature highly detailed skin, hair, and clothing, while environments use advanced lighting and materials. The game supports Hardware Lumen (UE5's global illumination and ray tracing system), which creates realistic lighting conditions.
The engine also enables the game's robust character creation system, Build Mode for constructing and furnishing homes, and the dynamic weather and seasonal systems. Upscaling technologies including NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR 3, and Intel XeSS are all supported, helping maintain playable framerates on a wide range of hardware. See System Requirements for detailed specifications.

inZOI features three distinct open-world cities, each inspired by real-world locations and offering unique environments, career paths, and seasonal patterns:
Dowon is a dense urban metropolis inspired by Seoul, South Korea. It features towering skyscrapers, bustling commercial districts, residential neighborhoods, and a fully functional underground train system for fast travel between stations. Dowon experiences four distinct seasons that mimic real-world Korean weather cycles.
Notable locations in Dowon include the Narim Art Gallery (an entertainment community lot for art appreciation), Cafe Gaon (connected to the gallery), the Harang River district, Clover Park, and various entertainment venues. Dowon offers unique career paths including pro gaming and Idol careers, reflecting Korean pop culture.
Bliss Bay is a sun-soaked coastal city inspired by Santa Monica, California. Unlike Dowon's four seasons, Bliss Bay has warm weather year-round, with sparkling blue waters and picturesque beaches. The city features an iconic amusement park (the Bliss Bay Amusement Park) with attractions for all ages that transforms into a fireworks display at night.
Bliss Bay offers a laid-back California lifestyle with surfing at the beach (requires Fitness Level 3 to use a surfboard) and American-inspired dining. Unique careers include Amusement Park jobs, Furniture Store, Football Player, Surf Shop, and others not available in Dowon.
Cahaya (originally called Kucingku during development) is a tropical resort setting inspired by Southeast Asia. It was released on August 20, 2025 as the game's first free DLC, titled "Island Getaway". Cahaya is comprised of three islands: the main island (where Zois can earn a living through farming, gathering, or fishing), the resort island (offering recreation and relaxation), and a deserted island nestled between them.
Activities in Cahaya include spa visits with massage services, Turtlebot races, treasure hunts, lucky draws, snorkeling among coral reefs and sea turtles, and farming. Zois can travel between cities using a smartphone or computer to book flights. The Farm Store in Cahaya sells pickaxes needed for gem mining across all cities.
inZOI features nine life stages that Zois progress through over their lifetime:
Newborn (1 year / 1 in-game day) -- only available through pregnancy, not selectable at character creation
Toddler (ages 1-3 / 2 days) -- only available through pregnancy
Child (ages 3-10 / 7 days)
Adolescent (ages 10-16 / 6 days)
Teenager (ages 16-20.5 / 4.5 days)
Young Adult (ages 20.5-29.5 / 9 days)
Adult (ages 29.5-49.5 / 20 days)
Middle-Aged (ages 49.5-65.5 / 16 days)
Senior (ages 65.5+ / open-ended)
When creating a Zoi, you can select from seven of the nine life stages (Newborn and Toddler are birth-only). The default in-game day length is 96 real-world minutes, but players can adjust this to speed up or slow down the aging process. The Adolescent stage is a notable addition that differentiates inZOI from competitors.
inZOI's gameplay revolves around creating and managing the lives of Zois. The core loop consists of:
Character Creation: Over 250 customization options across the selectable life stages. Players can adjust hair, skin, physique, outfits, accessories, and nail art. Gender options include Male, Female, and Non-binary, with separate settings for romantic attraction preferences.
Life Simulation: Zois autonomously eat, sleep, socialize, work, and pursue hobbies based on their personalities. The trait system is partly based on the Enneagram personality-typing system with 18 traits across 6 categories. Traits affect needs, urges, skill gain rates, and relationship dynamics.
Skills: 27 skills ranging from creative pursuits like Art and Cooking to practical abilities like Housework, Handiwork, and Programming. Skills progress through 10 levels, unlocking new interactions, improving job performance, and enabling income generation.
Careers: Multiple career paths available across different cities, from traditional jobs at restaurants and shops to specialized paths like pro gaming, Idol performance, and athletics. The v0.5.0 update added business ownership.
Build Mode: A comprehensive construction system for designing homes, placing furniture, and customizing lot layouts. Includes a Furniture Workbench for crafting custom furniture and a 3D Printer that uses AI to convert uploaded images into decorative objects.
City Edit Mode: Players can modify the city itself, changing weather patterns, editing properties, and reshaping the environment.
Crime System: Introduced in v0.5.0, Zois can become thieves or scammers through the Suspicious Job Agency. Crimes have escalating levels (0-5) with increasing rewards and risks, including arrest and trial. See Crime for details.
Smart Zoi is inZOI's AI-driven character system, developed in partnership with NVIDIA using their ACE (Avatar Cloud Engine) technology. Smart Zoi transforms standard NPCs into autonomous characters that develop their own personalities, make independent decisions, and evolve based on their experiences.
The system runs on a Mistral NeMo Minitron small language model (SLM) with 0.5 billion parameters that operates entirely on-device -- no cloud connection is required. NVIDIA's distillation methods provide high-quality outputs at low latency in a compact footprint. The model uses approximately 1 GB of VRAM. Smart Zois generate inner thoughts about their interactions that players can observe in real-time, analyze their experiences, and refine their behavior over time. Players can customize a Smart Zoi's personality by writing free-form text prompts to modify their actions and life goals.
Smart Zoi requires a GeForce RTX GPU (AMD is not supported). The minimum requirement is an RTX 3060 or RTX 4060 with 8 GB VRAM, though an RTX 5070 or RTX 4070 SUPER with 12 GB VRAM is recommended. When active, graphics settings automatically drop by one tier to free GPU resources for the AI model. The feature currently supports English only. See System Requirements for full GPU tier details.
inZOI supports community modding through the ModKit, an official tool that makes modding accessible. The ModKit is available for download via the Epic Games Store and allows players to create custom outfits, furniture, and modifications. Official plugins help modders import inZOI meshes into their 3D software, and custom assets can be turned into mods using the Unreal plugin format.
Canvas is inZOI's built-in user-generated content (UGC) platform where the community uploads creations, downloads those of others, and interacts through likes and comments. Players can browse by categories including Zoi designs, houses, faces, outfits, rooms, and furniture, or view popular creators and trending content. Mods can also be distributed through CurseForge.
A notable feature in Build Mode is the 3D Printer, which uses AI to transform uploaded images into decorative 3D objects. Open Build Mode, select the Craft tab, choose the 3D Printer, and upload an image. The AI generates the object in about 20 seconds, with the option to regenerate for a slightly different outcome.
For best results, use images with plain backgrounds. JPEGs work well for fully 3D objects, while PNGs with transparent backgrounds are better for flat items. The 3D Printer creates decorations only -- functional objects cannot be produced this way. 3D-printed objects can be uploaded to and downloaded from Canvas for sharing with other players.
inZOI distinguishes itself from other life simulation games in several key ways:
Visual Fidelity: The Unreal Engine 5 foundation produces photorealistic graphics representing a generational leap over existing life sims. Character models, environments, and lighting are all significantly more detailed than competitors.
AI-Driven Characters: The Smart Zoi system, powered by NVIDIA ACE's on-device small language model, creates genuinely unpredictable NPC behavior that goes beyond scripted routines to emergent personality development.
Korean Cultural Identity: While international in scope, inZOI's Korean roots give it a distinct aesthetic and cultural flavor, from Dowon's Seoul-inspired architecture to the K-pop Idol career path.
Free Content Updates: KRAFTON provides all updates and DLC for free during the Early Access period. The $39.99 purchase price covers everything until the 1.0 release. The Cahaya Island Getaway expansion, ModKit, and multiple content patches have all been released at no additional cost.
Mod Support: The ModKit and Canvas platform foster a robust creation ecosystem, allowing the community to create and share custom outfits, furniture, and modifications.
Nine Life Stages: With nine distinct life stages from Newborn to Senior, including the unique Adolescent stage, inZOI offers more granular life progression than most competitors.
inZOI's Early Access launch was a major commercial success:
The game ranked #1 on Steam's Global Top Wishlists the day before launch.
It rose to #1 on Steam's Global Top Sellers (by sales revenue) within 40 minutes of release.
Peak concurrent players reached 87,377 on launch day.
Steam reviews were 86% positive ("Very Positive") at launch based on approximately 2,700 reviews.
Over 1 million copies sold by April 4, 2025 (one week after launch), making it KRAFTON's fastest-selling title ever.
KRAFTON branded inZOI a "long-term franchise" following the strong sales performance.
The game has been widely covered as a serious competitor to Electronic Arts' The Sims franchise, the first to genuinely challenge that series' dominance of the life simulation genre.
As of early 2026, inZOI is available on:
Windows PC -- via Steam (Early Access since March 28, 2025)
macOS -- released August 20, 2025 (requires Apple Silicon M2 chip or newer with 16GB unified memory)
Upcoming platform releases:
PlayStation 5 -- planned for H1 2026 (first half of 2026)
Xbox Series X|S -- under consideration but not yet confirmed
KRAFTON has outlined a long-term development roadmap that includes continued content updates, new cities, expanded mod support, and potential multiplayer features in the future. While multiplayer is being considered -- including the ability to visit other players' worlds or invite them to your home -- there are no specific dates announced. The South Korean president reportedly encouraged the director to prioritize multiplayer during a meeting. All DLC and updates remain free through the Early Access period, with KRAFTON framing the game as a platform that will grow significantly before its full 1.0 release.
