Initial version
inZOI is a life simulation game developed by inZOI Studio and published by KRAFTON, the South Korean company best known for PUBG: Battlegrounds. The game launched in Early Access on Steam on March 28, 2025, and is built on Unreal Engine 5, giving it a distinctly photorealistic visual style that sets it apart from other games in the life simulation genre.
In inZOI, the player takes on the role of an intern at AR COMPANY, a virtual reality firm tasked with managing a neighborhood of virtual people called "Zois." These Zois live their lives with their own free will, performing actions and building relationships based on their personalities and life experiences. The game offers deep customization, open-ended gameplay, and an AI-driven character system that produces emergent storytelling.
inZOI Studio is an internal development team within KRAFTON, Inc., headquartered in South Korea. KRAFTON is a major global gaming company that also publishes PUBG: Battlegrounds, The Callisto Protocol, and other titles. The studio was formed specifically to develop inZOI as a next-generation life simulation, leveraging KRAFTON's resources and technical expertise.
The game's development was led by Hyungjun Kim, who served as the project director. The team drew inspiration from Korean urban culture and aesthetics, which is reflected in the game's art direction, city designs, and the cultural elements woven into daily Zoi life.
inZOI is one of the first life simulation games built on Unreal Engine 5. This engine choice is responsible for the game's standout visual fidelity — character models feature highly detailed skin, hair, and clothing, while environments use advanced lighting and materials. The game supports Hardware Lumen (UE5's global illumination and ray tracing system), which creates realistic lighting with surprisingly modest performance overhead.
The engine also enables the game's robust character creation system, Build Mode for constructing and furnishing homes, and the dynamic weather and seasonal systems. Upscaling technologies including NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR 3, and Intel XeSS are all supported, helping maintain playable framerates on a wide range of hardware. See System Requirements for detailed specifications.

inZOI features three distinct open-world cities, each inspired by real-world locations and offering unique environments, career paths, and seasonal patterns:
Dowon is a dense urban metropolis inspired by Seoul, South Korea. It features towering skyscrapers, bustling commercial districts, residential neighborhoods, and a fully functional underground train system for fast travel between stations. Dowon experiences four distinct seasons with a wet-summer, dry-winter rainfall pattern mirroring real-world Korean weather cycles.
Notable locations in Dowon include the Narim Art Gallery (a community lot for art appreciation), the Harang River district, Clover Park, and various entertainment venues. Dowon offers unique career paths including pro gaming and Idol careers, reflecting Korean pop culture.
Bliss Bay is a sun-soaked coastal city inspired by Santa Monica, California. Unlike Dowon's four seasons, Bliss Bay has warm weather year-round, with sparkling blue waters and picturesque beaches. The city features an iconic amusement park with attractions for all ages that transforms into a fireworks display at night.
Bliss Bay offers a laid-back California lifestyle with surfing, skateboarding at the skate park, and American-inspired dining. Career-wise, Bliss Bay provides a pro-athlete route and other beach-culture career paths not available in Dowon.
Cahaya (originally called Kucingku) is a tropical resort city inspired by Bali, Indonesia. It was released as a free DLC in August 2025 and is the game's first post-launch city. Cahaya offers three resort accommodations: the Garden Villa, Premier Ocean View Villa, and Private Water Villa.
Activities in Cahaya include spa visits with massage services, lucky draws, turtle races, and relaxation at saunas. Zois can travel between cities using a smartphone or computer to book flights, or by taking the airport shuttle or seaplane.
inZOI's gameplay revolves around creating and managing the lives of Zois. The core loop consists of:
Character Creation: Over 250 customization options across six age groups (Child through Senior). Players can adjust hair, skin, physique, outfits, accessories, nail art, and more. Gender options include male, female, and non-binary.
Life Simulation: Zois autonomously eat, sleep, socialize, work, and pursue hobbies based on their personalities. Over 400 mental elements influence their behavior, creating emergent situations like rumors, trends, and social dynamics.
Skills: 27 skills ranging from creative pursuits like Art and Cooking to practical abilities like Housework and Programming. Skills unlock new interactions, improve job performance, and enable income generation.
Careers: Multiple career paths available across different cities, from traditional jobs at restaurants and shops to specialized paths like pro gaming, idol performance, and athletics.
Build Mode: A comprehensive construction system for designing homes, placing furniture, and customizing lot layouts. Recent updates have added over 175 new items across different room types.
City Edit Mode: Players can modify the city itself, changing weather patterns, editing properties, and reshaping streets to create a personalized world.
Smart Zoi is inZOI's AI-driven character system, developed in partnership with NVIDIA using their ACE (Avatar Cloud Engine) and CPC (Co-Playable Character) technologies. Smart Zoi transforms standard NPCs into autonomous characters that develop their own personalities, make independent decisions, and evolve based on their experiences.
The system runs on a Small Language Model (SLM) that operates entirely on-device — no cloud connection is required. Smart Zois generate inner thoughts about their interactions, analyze their experiences at the end of each day, and refine their behavior for the following day. Players can customize a Smart Zoi's personality by writing prompts (for example, instructing a Zoi to always be kind and friendly, or the opposite).
Smart Zoi requires an NVIDIA RTX GPU (AMD is not supported) and can be applied to up to 300 Zois in a single city. The feature currently supports English only. When active, graphics settings automatically drop by one tier to free GPU resources for the AI model. See System Requirements for GPU tier details.
inZOI distinguishes itself from other life simulation games in several key ways:
Visual Fidelity: The Unreal Engine 5 foundation produces photorealistic graphics that represent a generational leap over existing life sims. Character models, environments, and lighting are all significantly more detailed than competitors.
AI-Driven Characters: The Smart Zoi system creates genuinely unpredictable NPC behavior, moving beyond scripted routines to emergent personality development. Zois remember interactions and adapt over time.
Korean Cultural Identity: While international in scope, inZOI's Korean roots give it a distinct aesthetic and cultural flavor, from Dowon's Seoul-inspired architecture to the K-pop Idol career path.
Free Content Updates: KRAFTON has committed to providing all updates and DLC for free during the Early Access period. The Cahaya city expansion, mod support, and multiple content patches have all been released at no additional cost.
Mod Support: The ModKit allows community creators to design custom outfits, furniture, and modifications, fostering a robust creation ecosystem through the Canvas sharing platform.
inZOI's Early Access launch was a major commercial success:
The game ranked #1 on Steam's Global Top Wishlists the day before launch.
It rose to #1 on Steam's Global Top Sellers within 40 minutes of release.
Over 1 million copies sold in the first week (by April 4, 2025), making it KRAFTON's fastest-selling title ever.
KRAFTON branded inZOI a "long-term franchise" following the strong sales performance.
The game has been widely covered as a serious competitor to Electronic Arts' The Sims franchise, the first to genuinely challenge that series' dominance of the life simulation genre.
As of early 2026, inZOI is available on:
Windows PC — via Steam (Early Access since March 28, 2025)
macOS — announced at Apple WWDC 2025 in June 2025

KRAFTON has outlined a long-term development roadmap that includes continued content updates, new cities, expanded mod support, and the eventual multiplayer component called inZOI Online. All DLC and updates remain free through the Early Access period, with KRAFTON framing the game as a platform that will grow significantly before its full 1.0 release.
