Death in inZOI is permanent and consequential. Zois can die from a wide range of causes, from old age and starvation to anger and embarrassment. Game Director Hyungjun "Kjun" Kim has stated that 16 different death types are planned for the game. As of the current Early Access build, 15 have been identified through gameplay and developer communications. Death triggers a karma evaluation that determines whether the Zoi passes to the afterlife or becomes a ghost.
The natural end of a Zoi's lifespan. Death from old age occurs approximately 17 in-game days after a Zoi enters the Senior life stage. The exact timing has some randomness. There is no way to prevent death from old age. The Zoi simply passes away peacefully.
Traffic collisions can be fatal. Manual driving with reckless steering is the most common trigger. Player-controlled Zois driving cars into other Zois on the street can cause death. NPC-driven accidents can also occur but are less frequent.
Being trapped in a burning building. Fires can start from cooking accidents, faulty electronics, or candles left unattended. If a Zoi cannot escape the flames or extinguish them in time, they burn to death. Multiple objects in a home catching fire simultaneously makes escape particularly difficult.
Accidental falls on wet surfaces. Bathrooms and kitchens are the most common locations. Wet floors from spills, mopping, or water leaks create slip hazards. A Zoi who falls at the wrong angle can die from the impact.
Prolonged critical hunger. If the Hunger need stays at zero for approximately 3 to 4 in-game days, the Zoi starves to death. The game provides multiple warnings as hunger reaches critical levels.
Extended sleeplessness. If a Zoi is prevented from sleeping for too long, their health collapses. The game warns the player as the Sleep need approaches lethal levels. Collapse precedes death.
Electrocution during appliance repairs. When objects break down and a Zoi attempts to fix them, there is a chance of electric shock. The probability increases with frequent breakdowns and lower Housework skill levels. Hiring a professional repairperson avoids this risk entirely.
Death from social neglect and despair. The Recognition need measures a Zoi's desire to be acknowledged. If this need reaches critically low levels through sustained isolation, rejection, or rumor campaigns, the Zoi can die from the psychological damage.
Untreated illness progressing to a fatal stage. Zois can contract diseases through various means, including exposure to bad weather while wearing inappropriate clothing. If the illness is not addressed, it worsens over time and can eventually kill.
Prolonged exposure to high environmental pollution. City settings with elevated pollution levels gradually damage a Zoi's health over time. Spending extended periods in heavily polluted areas without relief leads to death.
Sustained extreme anger. If a Zoi's emotional state stays at peak rage for an extended period, with repeated triggers piling on top of each other, they can die from the sheer intensity of their fury. This is a rare cause of death that requires very specific circumstances.
Repeated intense embarrassment. Similar to anger, this requires multiple embarrassing events hitting a Zoi in rapid succession. A single embarrassing moment is not fatal. A chain of them, one after another without recovery time, can be.
Consuming contaminated or spoiled food. Food left out too long spoils, and eating it causes food poisoning. Severe cases are fatal. See Cooking for food spoilage mechanics.
Excessive physical activity without rest. Pushing a Zoi through intense fitness routines, swimming, or labor-intensive tasks without breaks or adequate need management can cause death from physical exhaustion.
Swimming too long without rest. A Zoi who stays in water for approximately 3 in-game hours without getting out risks drowning. This applies to swimming pools and open water. Placing a pool tube in the water provides a resting option that prevents drowning.
The developers explicitly chose not to include a direct "kill" or "murder" interaction. There is no button that causes one Zoi to intentionally kill another. This was a deliberate design decision. However, players can cause death indirectly through environmental manipulation:
Autonomy manipulation: Turn off autonomy (press [T]) and prevent the Zoi from fulfilling any needs. Without food, sleep, or hygiene, they will eventually die.
Entrapment: Use Build Mode to construct walls around a Zoi, trapping them in a room without food, beds, or toilets.
Arson: Start a fire in a home while other Zois are inside and unable to escape.
Vehicular: Drive a car into another Zoi on the street. Manual driving mode gives the player direct steering control.
When a Zoi dies, the game follows a sequence:
Death event: The Zoi collapses. A notification announces the death and cause.
Go Back In Time: The player is offered a "Go Back In Time" option to reload a previous save state. This effectively undoes the death. Choosing not to reload means accepting the death as permanent.
Karma evaluation: The Zoi's karma score is assessed. High karma leads to peaceful passing. Low karma leads to ghost creation.
Survivor impact: Surviving family members and close friends experience sadness and depression. Their emotions and needs are affected for a period. Notification messages are sent to connected Zois.
Death is generally permanent. There is no resurrection mechanic in the current build. The only reversal is the Go Back In Time save reload.
Children cannot die from neglect or accidents. If a child Zoi's needs become critically low, the Child Protection Agency intervenes and removes the child from the household instead. The child is taken away and no longer appears in the family. This protection applies only to children. Teenagers, despite still being minors, can die from the same causes as adults and do not receive Child Protection Agency intervention.
Two cheat codes relate to death:
immortalZoi true -- Makes the active Zoi immortal. They cannot die from any cause. Use immortalZoi false to remove the protection.
removeZoi -- Instantly removes the active Zoi from the game. This is not a death in the traditional sense. The Zoi simply ceases to exist. No karma evaluation occurs, no ghost is created, and no survivor impact triggers.
