Boss Fight: Fontaine, the Cursed Knight
The fight takes place in the courtyard at the top of the castle. Fontaine wields a cursed shield that periodically summons a spectral (ghost) knight, creating a dual-threat encounter. Despite the two opponents, there is only one health bar.
Dual-Threat Mechanic
Fontaine's cursed shield contains a spectral knight bound to it by dark magic. The ghost acts independently, executing its own attack patterns even while Fontaine continues his own combos. This means you must track two sets of attack animations simultaneously. The spectral knight does not have a separate health bar; depleting the main health bar defeats both.
Threats
Threat | Attacks | Priority |
|---|---|---|
Fontaine | Heavy melee strikes with a supernatural sword, devastating combo chains | Primary target |
Spectral Knight | Ground slams, ranged arrow shots, operates independently | Dodge and avoid; cannot be killed separately |
Strategy
Weapon: The Tauria Curved Sword with heavy attacks works well here. If you equipped the Nature's Echo green skill, it duplicates your heavy strikes, effectively doubling damage output during openings.
Combo pattern: Land heavy attack combos followed by light attacks to break Fontaine's defenses. This staggers him briefly, allowing further damage.
When the ghost appears: Dodge away immediately and create distance. Wait for a gap in the combined attack patterns before re-engaging. Trying to power through while both enemies attack is suicidal.
Dodge, do not block: Fontaine's strikes hit hard enough to drain guard stamina quickly. Dodging preserves your ability to counterattack.
Healing: Use whatever Grilled Meat or cooked food you saved from the siege. If you brought 200+ originally, you should have enough. Heal whenever you drop below half health.
Openings
Fontaine leaves himself open at the end of his combo chains, similar to most humanoid bosses. The windows are short because the ghost knight may still be mid-attack. Learn to recognize when both enemies are in recovery simultaneously and commit to two or three heavy hits before dodging out.
Rewards
Reward | Type |
|---|---|
Shackle of Might | Weapon (Sword) |
Abyss Artifact (x1) | Skill Point |
Notes
If you are struggling, upgrade your cooked food quality. Higher-tier recipes restore more health per use, extending your survivability.
The spectral knight's arrows have distinct audio cues. Listen for the bowstring sound to time your dodges.
After defeating Fontaine, a cutscene plays and the quest completes, leading directly into The Blood Coronation investigation sequence.
