Overview
Material-filled chests are loot containers added to Crimson Desert in Patch 1.01.00 on March 28, 2026. They are scattered throughout the world of Pywel and contain various crafting materials, upgrade resources, and other useful items. Pearl Abyss introduced these chests to supplement the existing material acquisition loop, giving players additional sources of resources beyond gathering nodes, enemy drops, and vendor purchases. The chests reward thorough exploration and provide a passive way to accumulate crafting supplies while traveling between objectives.
Contents
Material-filled chests can contain a variety of crafting materials used across multiple disciplines. Common contents include:
Ores: Iron Ore, Copper Ore, and other metal resources used in weapon and armor crafting at blacksmith stations.
Hides and leather: Raw animal hides and processed leather used for crafting light armor, gloves, and footwear.
Timber and wood: Various wood types used in crafting bows, shields, and other wooden equipment.
Herbs and reagents: Plant-based materials used in alchemy and cooking recipes.
Upgrade materials: Less commonly, chests contain materials used in equipment refinement, making them a valuable find for players working on improving their gear.
The specific contents of each chest vary. Some chests lean toward a particular material type based on the region where they are found (for example, chests in mountainous areas are more likely to contain ores), while others offer a mixed selection.
Locations
Material-filled chests are distributed across all regions of Pywel. Unlike quest-specific loot or story rewards, these chests are placed in the open world as exploration incentives. They are often tucked away in less obvious locations that reward players who stray from the main paths:
Behind large rocks and boulders near cliff faces
Inside caves and cavern side chambers
Near ruins and abandoned structures
Along cliff edges and elevated vantage points
Hidden in dense vegetation or behind waterfalls
In the corners of enemy camps and strongholds
The chests do not appear on the map by default. Players must physically discover them by exploring the environment. Some regions have a higher density of material-filled chests than others, though Pearl Abyss has not published an official distribution map.
Differences from Other Containers
Crimson Desert features several types of loot containers, and material-filled chests occupy a distinct role among them:
Strongbox puzzles: Strongboxes require solving environmental puzzles before they can be opened. Material-filled chests have no puzzle requirement and can be opened immediately upon discovery.
Quest reward chests: Some chests are tied to specific quests and contain predetermined rewards. Material-filled chests are independent of any quest and are always available as long as the player can reach them.
Enemy drop loot: Defeated enemies drop materials and items on the ground. Material-filled chests provide similar resources but are found through exploration rather than combat.
Role in the Material Economy
Before Patch 1.01.00, the primary methods for acquiring crafting materials were gathering from resource nodes, looting enemy corpses, and purchasing from merchants. While these methods were functional, some players felt that the rate of material acquisition was too slow relative to the amount of crafting and upgrading required in the mid-to-late game. Material-filled chests add a supplementary acquisition channel that does not replace the existing methods but provides a welcome bonus for players who explore thoroughly.
The chests are particularly valuable for players who focus on equipment refinement, which consumes significant quantities of raw materials. Finding even a few extra ores or hides in a chest can save a meaningful amount of gathering time.
Tips
Check behind every large rock formation and inside every cave entrance. Many chests are placed just out of the default camera angle.
Revisit areas you cleared early in the game. Material-filled chests may be in locations you passed through before the patch was applied.
Pair chest hunting with gathering runs to maximize material income from a single exploration session.
Keep your inventory organized to avoid running out of space while collecting materials from multiple chests in a row.
