The world map of Crimson Desert spans the continent of Pywel, roughly 90 square kilometers of explorable terrain. The open world is divided into five major regions, each with distinct geography, climate, factions, and content. When you first begin exploring, the vast majority of the map is hidden behind a fog of war system that only recedes as you physically travel through the world or ring bell towers in settlements.
The Knowledge System tracks 2,921 total entries across the continent, including 573 named territories. Discovering every territory and clearing the fog from every corner of Pywel is one of the game's most rewarding long-term objectives. This guide covers how the fog of war works, every method for clearing it, what counts toward full completion, and strategies for reaching 100% map coverage.
Pywel's playable area is estimated at around 90 square kilometers, roughly twice the size of Skyrim and comparable to Red Dead Redemption 2. The terrain includes rolling farmland, mountain passes, coastal cliffs, dense forests, snowy peaks, and arid desert. Crossing the entire continent takes a long time regardless of method.
Method | Estimated Crossing Time |
|---|---|
On foot | Approximately 6 hours edge to edge |
On horseback | Approximately 2 hours edge to edge |
Fast travel | Instant between discovered Traces of the Abyss |
These times represent straight-line travel without stopping. In practice, the dense open world means you will frequently be sidetracked by encounters, collectibles, NPC interactions, and points of interest along the way. Horseback is the most practical method for systematic map clearing, since it covers ground quickly while still revealing fog in a wide radius around you.
The map begins almost entirely covered in fog of war. Unexplored regions are hidden behind a dark overlay that obscures terrain, landmarks, and points of interest. Crimson Desert uses a layered visibility system: areas remain completely hidden until you either walk through them or trigger a reveal mechanic like a bell tower.
Key details about how the fog system works:
Fog clears as you physically move through new areas on foot, horseback, or while gliding. The reveal radius around your character is moderate, meaning thorough coverage requires deliberate exploration rather than just passing through
Cleared fog is permanent. You never need to revisit areas to keep them revealed on the map
When fog clears in an area, it reveals towns and settlements, rivers, roads, geographical features, and question mark icons pointing toward undiscovered points of interest
Dungeon interiors, hidden cave systems, and certain secret collectible locations are not visible even after surface fog is cleared. These require on-foot ground-level exploration to discover
Points of interest such as merchants, fast travel points, and hunting spots appear on the map once you get close enough for the fog to clear around them
The fastest and most effective method for clearing the fog of war is finding and ringing bell towers scattered across Pywel. When you ring a bell, a Shai is summoned by the chime and sweeps through the surrounding area, permanently clearing a large section of fog from the map. This is far more efficient than relying on passive exploration alone.
There are 8 bells in total, and finding all of them is tied to the Toll of Pywel questline for the Priorin Forest Guardians faction. Ringing all eight bells reveals the entire continent on your map. The bells should be one of your first priorities when entering any new settlement.
Locate a stone or wooden bell tower spire in a town, city, or settlement
Climb to the very top of the structure. Use adjacent rooftops to rest and recover stamina midway through tall towers
Interact with the bell at the top to ring it
A Shai appears in a short cutscene and clears the surrounding fog of war
The revealed area is permanently visible on your world map
The minimap displays a small bell icon when you are in proximity to a bell tower. Each bell reveals a different-sized area depending on the region, but none of them reveal the entire map on their own. You need all eight to fully clear the continent.
Bell Name | Region | Location Details | Access Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Toll of Hernand | Clocktower in northern Hernand Town, west of the main Tavern | Available from the start of the game | |
Toll of Scholastone | Plaza pagoda at Scholastone Institute, southwest of Hernand in the mountains | Reachable from the start; use Force Palm jumps to climb | |
Toll of Calphade | Church roof at the Church of Calphade in Thalwynd Village, far northeast, west of the castle | Unavailable during Chapter 6 due to hostile conditions | |
Toll of Demeniss | Tallest clocktower in the Demeniss capital. Hang from the flagpole on the tower side to bring down the bell | Available once the city becomes non-hostile | |
Toll of Delesyia | Clocktower in the northwest part of Delesyia capital, across from Delesyia Castle | Available from the start | |
Toll of Tommaso | Crimson Desert (north) | Located in Tashkalp, a city far to the northeast; the bell is on the north side of town | Available from the start; long journey to reach |
Toll of Pailune | Red tower near the docks in the center of Pailune city | Only accessible after Chapter 7 (post-Resolution mission) | |
Toll of Varnia | Far north | Highest dome at the top of the palace in Varnia, the furthest-north settlement in Pywel | Available from the start; longest ride in the game |
Most bells are encountered naturally during story progression, so there is no need to rush for all eight early on. That said, ringing a bell as soon as you arrive in a new settlement is always worth the short detour. The cleared map makes everything else in the region easier to find.
After clearing fog from a region, the map populates with various icons and markers. The most common are question mark icons labeled "Mysterious Energy" that appear as white circles on the world map. These indicate undiscovered points of interest and can be viewed under the "All" or "Environment" tabs of the map screen.
Mysterious Energy markers lead to one of two types of content:
Abyss Nexus points: Fast travel nodes that activate the moment you step on them. They appear as circular floor plates and glow blue when discovered.
Abyss Cresset points: Locations that require solving a puzzle or completing a challenge before they become active. These include Ancient Ruins puzzles and Secret Places. Completing them unlocks a fast travel point and rewards Abyss Artifacts.
When you get close to a Mysterious Energy zone, use the Blinding Flash ability (L1+R1 or LB+RB) to reflect light from your sword. This casts a silvery glint in the distance, pinpointing the exact location of the hidden Nexus or Cresset. Blinding Flash can be used while mounted, making it practical to scan for points of interest while traveling on horseback. Revealed locations appear on the map as Mysterious Energy markers.
Full map completion in Crimson Desert involves more than just clearing the fog. The game tracks several categories of discoverable content across Pywel. Here is a breakdown of the major trackable elements:
Category | Count | Description |
|---|---|---|
Hidden Bells | 8 | Bell towers for the Toll of Pywel questline; clears fog of war |
Territory Knowledge | 573 | Named territories tracked in the Knowledge System; discovered by visiting each area |
60 | Hidden Abyss Cressets found by exploring off the beaten path | |
37 | Puzzle locations that reward Abyss Artifacts when solved | |
Sanctums | 16 | Challenge dungeons with unique encounters |
Spires | 8 | Spires of Soaring; gliding launch points across the continent |
Abyss Restoration Sites | 40 | Locations tied to restoring Abyss energy across Pywel |
76 | Story bosses, overworld bosses, dungeon bosses, and Abyss encounters | |
Varies | Abyss Nexus (step-on activation) and Abyss Cresset (puzzle activation) points |
The Knowledge System is the game's comprehensive codex that automatically records discoveries as you play. With 2,921 total entries, it functions both as a lore compendium and a completionist tracking tool. The territories subcategory (573 entries) serves as your primary map completion checklist; missing entries indicate regions you have not yet visited.
Knowledge Category | Entries | How to Discover |
|---|---|---|
Territories | 573 | Visit each named territory on foot or mount |
People | 467 | Speak with NPCs and complete quests |
Creatures | 401 | Encounter or defeat each creature type |
Crafting Manuals | 355 | Find recipes for cooking, alchemy, and equipment |
Factions | 110 | Interact with faction members and complete faction quests |
Collectibles | 94 | Pick up scattered collectible items across Pywel |
Bosses | 76 | Defeat each boss to register its Knowledge entry |
Mounts | 29 | Tame or acquire each mount type |
Picking up materials in the open world also adds Knowledge entries, so make sure to collect everything you come across during exploration. Certain observation-based Knowledge entries can directly unlock new player skills and abilities through the observation learning mechanic.
Traces of the Abyss are scattered markers found throughout Pywel. When you discover one, it becomes an active fast travel point that you can teleport to from anywhere using the map screen. The fast travel network splits into two types: Abyss Nexus points that unlock the moment you step on them, and Abyss Cresset points that require solving a puzzle before activation. Both become permanent teleport destinations once activated.
Strategies for using fast travel effectively during map completion:
Prioritize Traces in new regions: When entering a new area, seek out the nearest Trace of the Abyss before doing anything else. This gives you a return point if you need to leave and come back.
Connect a travel network: As you discover more Traces across Pywel, your fast travel network expands, letting you hop between regions quickly.
Combine with mounts: Fast travel to the nearest Trace, then ride your horse to your actual destination for maximum efficiency.
Check during story missions: Some story objectives take you through areas with Traces of the Abyss. Make sure to interact with them even if they are slightly off your main path.
Use Blinding Flash while riding: When approaching a Mysterious Energy marker, activate Blinding Flash from horseback to reveal whether it is a Nexus or Cresset before dismounting.
Beyond walking and horseback riding, Crimson Desert offers several additional movement options that help with map exploration:
Traversal Method | Details |
|---|---|
Climbing | Scale cliff faces, buildings, and natural formations. Consumes stamina based on height and distance. |
Use Crow's Wings to glide from elevated positions. Covers long distances efficiently. Dip in and out of glide to regenerate stamina during free-fall. | |
Swimming | Cross rivers and lakes. Governed by stamina; plan your routes to avoid running out in deep water. |
Mounts (non-horse) | Bears, raptors, lizards, and dragons each handle different terrain. Some mounts excel in specific regions. |
A traversal device faster than Crow's Wings, available later in the game. | |
An aerial vehicle for surveying the landscape from above. |
Pywel is divided into five main regions, each with its own biome, enemies, Knowledge entries, and bell towers. The table below summarizes the regions and their bell tower availability.
Region | Biome | Bell Towers | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|
Pastoral countryside and forests | Toll of Hernand, Toll of Scholastone, Toll of Calphade | Starting region with Hernand Town, Greymane Camp, Nas River, Deepfog Basin | |
Snowy mountains | Toll of Pailune (Chapter 7+) | Cold-weather challenges, unique mountain creatures, specialized mounts | |
Central plains and cities | Toll of Demeniss | Major urban center directly east of Hernand; cathedral and clocktower | |
Southeast woodlands and castles | Toll of Delesyia | Delesyia Castle, dense forests, political faction hubs | |
Crimson Desert | Arid desert and northern frontier | Toll of Tommaso, Toll of Varnia | Harsh conditions, long travel distances, Tashkalp and Varnia settlements |
For players who want to skip bell hunting entirely, there is an exploration perk in the Scholarship branch of the skill tree that removes all remaining fog of war from the entire map at once. When unlocked, this perk reveals every point of interest, hunting spot, merchant, and fast travel location across all of Pywel.
This skill is located in the Green (Spirit) branch. Unlocking it requires investing skill points into the Scholarship line, so it is typically a mid-to-late-game option rather than something available early. If you plan to unlock it, you can skip some of the harder-to-reach bell towers and focus your early exploration on the regions you visit during the main story.
Keep in mind that this skill reveals map terrain and icons, but it does not automatically discover Knowledge entries. You still need to physically visit each of the 573 territories to register them in the Knowledge System.
Ring bells first: Whenever you arrive in a new town or city, look for the bell tower before doing anything else. Clearing the fog early saves you from wandering blind and lets you plan efficient routes through the surrounding territory.
Follow roads between settlements: Roads connect major towns and pass through multiple territories. Walking or riding a road from end to end clears significant fog of war and often leads past points of interest you would otherwise miss.
Use high ground: Climb or glide from elevated positions to survey the landscape and spot undiscovered locations. Gliding from a Spire of Soaring covers large distances and reveals fog in a wide area beneath you.
Check the Knowledge menu regularly: The territories category (573 entries) serves as your completion checklist. Missing entries indicate regions you have not visited. Sort by region to identify gaps.
Revisit areas after story progress: Some territories only become accessible after certain story events or after liberating an area from enemy control. The Toll of Calphade bell, for example, is temporarily inaccessible during Chapter 6.
Scan with Blinding Flash while riding: When you see a Mysterious Energy marker on the map, ride toward it and activate Blinding Flash (L1+R1 or LB+RB) from horseback. The ability pinpoints hidden Nexus and Cresset points without requiring you to dismount and search on foot.
Manage stamina during climbing and gliding: Long climbs drain stamina quickly. Use ledges, rooftops, and mid-air Force Palm jumps to rest. While gliding, cancel and free-fall briefly to regenerate stamina before resuming your glide.
Dispatch companions: Sending Greymane companions to blockade locations can open paths to territories that are otherwise difficult to reach. This is especially useful for accessing gated areas without waiting for the relevant story chapter.
Invest in the Scholarship exploration perk: If you are aiming for 100% completion, the full map reveal in the Green (Spirit) skill tree branch eliminates guesswork about where fog remains. Pair it with the Knowledge menu to systematically visit every undiscovered territory.
Pick up everything: Gathering materials, interacting with NPCs, and examining objects all add Knowledge entries. Treat exploration as a collection run, not just a sightseeing trip.
Completing the Toll of Pywel questline by ringing all eight bells earns credit with the Priorin Forest Guardians faction. Beyond the faction reward, a fully revealed map provides practical benefits that make every other activity in the game easier:
Full fast travel network: Every Abyss Nexus and Abyss Cresset point visible on the map, letting you build a complete teleportation grid across Pywel
Efficient quest routing: With all landmarks and settlements visible, you can plan the shortest routes for quest chains and side content
Collectible tracking: Seeing all Mysterious Energy markers makes it straightforward to track down remaining Secret Places, Ancient Ruins, and Sealed Abyss Artifacts
Knowledge milestones: Certain Knowledge categories unlock skills and abilities through the observation learning system. Filling out the territories subcategory is one of the largest single contributors to overall Knowledge completion
Boss discovery: Defeating each boss registers a Knowledge entry and typically rewards Abyss Artifacts, rare equipment, or crafting materials. A cleared map helps you locate optional overworld bosses you might otherwise never find
Full map completion, combined with all Knowledge entries, is expected to take over 300 hours for dedicated completionists. Taking a methodical approach by clearing fog with bells, using the Knowledge menu as a checklist, and scanning for Mysterious Energy with Blinding Flash will keep the process organized and efficient.
