Mercenaries are level 3 to 5 human enemies in Windrose, found guarding Pirate Camps and other hostile encampments across multiple biomes. They are paid soldiers (often former Brethren of the Coast, displaced colonial militia, or unaffiliated freebooters) hired by Blackbeard or pirate captains. Mercenaries are skilled with both melee weapons and firearms, alternating between cutlass and pistol attacks. They drop Piastres, Homemade Gunpowder, weapon plans, and occasional armor pieces.

Where to Find Mercenaries
All Pirate Camps in the Coastal Jungle and Foothills; mercenaries are the standard guard force
Cursed Swamps Pirate Camps; tougher mercenary variants here
Some Ancient Ruins host mercenary patrols rather than undead enemies
Hunting Strategy
Pull mercenaries individually by breaking line of sight; engaging multiple at once is significantly harder
Open with a musket shot to soften before they reach you
During their pistol reload window, commit to a heavy attack for major damage
Use Crude damage if you have a club or halberd; their light armor offers no resistance to blunt damage
Pirate Camps respawn daily; mercenaries are a renewable Piastre and gunpowder source
Lore
Mercenaries fill the human-enemy niche between civilians and Blackbeard's elite Pirate Sergeants. They are not part of any organized faction; they take coin from whoever pays. Some are former Brethren of the Coast members who lost their pirate identity after Blackbeard's betrayal; others are colonial militia members displaced by the British Navy's destruction. Their willingness to fight for Blackbeard reflects the broader collapse of organized resistance in the Caribbean: with no faction able to project power, individual fighters sell their swords to whoever offers the best terms.
