Progression in Romestead is structured around biomes and crafting tiers. The two main avenues for getting stronger are crafting better gear and restoring the gods, and the two work together.
The Progression Cycle
Explore a biome and gather its resources.
Craft better gear from those resources.
Restore the gods through offerings and sacrifices for buffs and technologies.
Defeat the biome's bosses to unlock the next crafting tier.
Take on the next biome with stronger gear.
Each new biome introduces new resources, building tiers, and gear sets, so advancement is gated behind both exploration and boss fights. See Biomes and Enemies and Bosses for the regions and the bosses that gate them.
Crafting Tiers
Defeating a biome's boss unlocks the next crafting tier, which in turn enables better gear and buildings. Early Access added a new progression biome that brings its own new building tiers and gear sets. New recipes are uncovered through research and through exploration.
Research and Scrolls
The University, a building added in Early Access, lets players research advanced recipes and craft powerful scrolls. Research is therefore a distinct path to unlocking advanced crafting beyond what is found in the world. See Settlements and Buildings for the building itself.
Skills, Talents, and Equipment
Players level up various skills and unlock talents in the form of favors with the gods. Characters can be equipped with a variety of armor, weapons, and trinkets, and foods and other consumables provide buffs. This equipment-and-buff layer is what lets players commit to a role such as melee, ranged, or magic. See Combat and The Gods and Worship.
