Skills in Romestead are use-based progression lines. Each one levels with the matching activity (swinging a sword, drawing a bow, breaking a rock) and scales effects with each level. There are thirteen skill lines in the launch build.

Gathering Skills

Woodcutting | +1% | Increases damage done to trees. |
Construction | +0.8% | Increases progress per hit when constructing. |
How Levels Work
The bonus per level is small but compounds, and it is why a character who has been swinging the same weapon class all playthrough noticeably out-damages a fresh alt using identical gear. Gathering lines climb fastest at +1% per level for Mining and Woodcutting, which is what turns a mid-game Iron Pickaxe into a tool that clears a vein in a couple of swings.
Each successful use grants XP toward the matching skill. There is no rebuy; the leveling is permanent for the character. Citizens have their own version of skill leveling on the side they are aligned to (e.g. a Blacksmith citizen levels their Blacksmithing expertise). See Citizens and Artisans for the citizen side.
Citizen Skill Sacrifices
At the Altar, sacrificing a citizen awards bonus Worship Points scaled by the citizen's skill levels: +5 base across all gods, then +10 per relevant skill level to the god whose worship route aligns with the skill. A high-Blacksmithing citizen sacrificed for Vulcan worship is worth significantly more than a brand-new survivor.
Skill Interactions with Worship
The Mars worship route boosts melee skills indirectly through the Blessing of Mars (+10% overall Melee attack power). The Diana route boosts ranged builds through Spreadshot and the post-0.20.1_14 routing of ranged/caster gear offerings. See The Gods and Worship.
