Overview
Power management is central to Outbound. The camper van runs on an electric motor, and every workstation, light, and appliance inside draws from the battery. Players start with a bio burner and progressively unlock renewable energy sources through the technology tree. This guide covers all four power sources and strategies for keeping the battery charged.
Power Sources
Source | Availability | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
Bio Burner | Starting equipment | Works anywhere, any time | Consumes biodegradable fuel |
Solar Panels | Unlocked via blueprint | Strong daytime output | No power at night or in heavy cloud cover |
Wind Turbines | Unlocked via blueprint | Works day and night | Needs elevation and open terrain |
Hydro Generators | Unlocked via blueprint | Steady, consistent output | Requires proximity to flowing water |
Bio Burner
The bio burner is the first power source available. It burns biodegradable materials to charge the van's battery. Fibre restores approximately 10% battery capacity per unit. Standard lumber also restores around 10%, while light lumber is more efficient at roughly 20% per unit. The bio burner is reliable but demands constant fuel gathering, making it the least sustainable option over long trips.
Solar Panels
Solar arrays unfold from the van's exterior and generate power during daylight hours. Output depends on weather conditions: clear skies produce the most energy, while overcast or rainy periods reduce or eliminate generation. Panel orientation matters as well; properly angled panels capture more sunlight. Solar is best suited to biomes with consistent sunshine and works well alongside a secondary source for nighttime coverage.
Wind Turbines
Wind turbines generate power regardless of time of day, making them a natural complement to solar panels. They require elevated positioning and open terrain to function effectively. Placing a turbine on the van's roof or on high ground produces better results than sheltered valleys. Wind conditions vary by biome and weather, so a turbine that performs well in The Outdoors may behave differently on The Coast. The windmill feature was present from the earliest alpha builds, with windmill sound effects added in patch v0.5.6.
Hydro Generators
Water-powered generators tap into rivers and streams for a steady energy supply. The output is consistent as long as the van is parked near running water, but this limits where you can set up camp. Hydro power rewards players who scout ahead for good parking spots near waterways. Rivers and lakes were added to the map view in alpha patch v0.5.8, making it easier to find suitable hydro locations.
Energy Strategy Tips
The energy system rewards flexibility. A mixed setup covering solar and wind handles most situations, but specialized builds can be more efficient in specific regions. Early on, keep the bio burner stocked as a backup while unlocking renewables. Surplus power feeds into the battery bank for use during nighttime or high-consumption activities. As you progress through the technology tree, the goal is to build a fully self-sufficient power grid that eliminates the need for burning resources entirely.
