Overview
Outbound is an open-world exploration and crafting game developed by Square Glade Games (Groningen, Netherlands) and published by Silver Lining Interactive (Cheshire, England). Outbound launched on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store) and Xbox Series X|S on May 11, 2026, with PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 following on May 14, 2026. The base game is $24.99 USD with a 10% launch discount through May 25, 2026. The game is also available day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, with cloud, console, and PC support.
Outbound blends cozy aesthetics with light survival mechanics, a combination the developers call cozyvival. Players start with an empty electric camper van and gradually build it into a mobile home while exploring a lively, solarpunk near-future world where humanity coexists with nature and advanced technology. The game supports 1 to 4 players in online co-op and is played entirely in first person.
Built in Unity 6 with the Universal Render Pipeline, Outbound has a distinctive low-poly art style inspired by Chobani's "Dear Alice" advertisement, a Studio Ghibli-influenced animation by The Line studio. The game has no combat, no enemies, and no death; players who run out of energy pass out and wake up at their van rather than facing a game-over screen.

Setting
Outbound takes place in a utopian near-future where humanity has found a balance between nature and technology. Windmills, solar panels, and lush greenery define the landscape. Cities and towns exist in the background, but the player spends their time out in the wild, driving through open countryside, forests, coastlines, and other natural environments.
The world is divided into distinct biomes, each with its own visual identity, weather patterns, flora, fauna, and resources. The Outdoors biome features rolling green fields and wooded areas, while The Coast introduces sandy beaches, tidal pools, and seaside landmarks. The full game shipped with additional biomes beyond the two featured in the demo, expanding the explorable map.
The setting draws heavily from solarpunk aesthetics, presenting an optimistic vision of the future rather than the post-apocalyptic or dystopian framing typical of survival games. The tone is hopeful and peaceful, with nature reclaiming spaces and technology serving ecological purposes.
Gameplay
The core gameplay loop begins with a bare-bones electric camper van. Players explore the world on foot and by driving, gathering resources to build out their van with functional modules: workstations, storage, a rooftop garden, and more. The van operates on a battery that drains as modules consume power, requiring players to manage their energy carefully through solar panels, wind turbines, and bio fuel.
Crafting is central to progression. Players unlock new recipes by discovering and activating Signal Towers scattered across the map. Each tower adds blueprints to the player's recipe list, encouraging exploration in every direction. Crafted items range from van modules and tools to decorative objects and functional equipment.
Other activities include farming (growing crops on the van's rooftop garden), cooking (preparing meals from gathered and grown ingredients), fishing (a planned free post-launch update), beekeeping (maintaining hives for honey production), and kite flying in open areas. A dog companion accompanies the player, helping carry items and providing company on the road.
The recycling system allows players to break down unwanted items into base materials, reducing waste and supporting the game's sustainability theme. Modular building lets players fold and unfold van sections, physically rearranging the interior and exterior to suit their needs.
Exploration
Exploration drives the game forward. The open world contains landmarks with unique stories and rewards, NPC settlements offering delivery tasks and trade, hidden clothing items, and environmental puzzles. Driving the van is the primary mode of long-distance travel, with on-foot exploration for local areas and off-road terrain.
The weather and day-night cycle affect gameplay directly. Rain, wind, and sunlight influence energy generation, crop growth, and kite flying conditions. Different times of day alter the visual atmosphere and may affect NPC availability at landmarks.
Multiplayer
Outbound supports online co-op for up to four players. All players share the host's camper van in a drop-in, drop-out session structure. One player drives while others can move freely inside the van, work at crafting stations, tend the rooftop garden, or ride on the roof enjoying the scenery. Players can also split up on foot to cover more ground, then regroup at the van.
Co-op is designed as an optional enhancement to the single-player experience rather than a separate mode. The entire game is playable solo, and multiplayer adds collaborative efficiency and social enjoyment without changing the core design.
Development
Outbound is the second game from Square Glade Games, a small indie studio based in Groningen, Netherlands. The studio's debut title, Above Snakes, sold over 60,000 copies in its first six months. Outbound's concept originated from studio founder Tobi's road trip from Germany to the Netherlands, where he saw a camper van parked beside solar panels and windmills.
The game was first revealed publicly on Steam in February 2024. A Kickstarter campaign in August-September 2024 raised EUR 265,679 from 5,197 backers, hitting its EUR 30,000 goal within two hours. All ten stretch goals were unlocked during the 30-day campaign, adding features like the dog companion, fishing, beekeeping, kite flying, and the character editor.
Alpha testing began in April 2025 (v0.5.5), followed by a beta in October 2025 (v0.7.6) that introduced a second biome, the dog companion, and controller support. The game won the gamescom CommUnity Choice Award in August 2025. A free demo at Steam Next Fest in February 2026 drew more than 50,000 testers with a Very Positive rating.
Reception
Pre-release reception was strong. The game passed 1.3 million Steam wishlists in March 2026 and climbed beyond 1.5 million by release, ranking among the most anticipated cozy indie titles of 2026. Launch-week critic reception settled into a mixed cluster, with aggregate scores sitting in the low 60s across several dozen reviews; review tone is split between praise for the cozy atmosphere and customization and criticism of the slow pace, sparse world, and lack of NPC interactions. Steam user reviews settled at Mostly Positive at the end of the first week, with the recommend percentage tracking around 73 percent on approximately 1,100 purchaser reviews, and the studio reported more than 40,000 players on launch day across all platforms with an average session length of roughly 2 hours 45 minutes. The rating has held since launch: as of early August 2026 the Steam rating remains Mostly Positive, with about 73 percent of roughly 1,700 user reviews recommending the game. Press coverage during the pre-launch period drew favorable comparisons to other cozy and survival-leaning open-world games in previews. The gamescom CommUnity Choice Award, voted on by attendees, recognized it as one of the show's standout titles.
The demo's strong player reception reflected enthusiasm for the core loop of van building, exploration, and resource management. Common praise centers on the relaxing atmosphere, the satisfying hands-on crafting system, and the visual charm of the solarpunk art direction.
