Klein Moretti

Added a section on Klein becoming an obtainable Connection on September 17, 2026, with his banner, skill and bonds, and his role as a Fool's Chessboard piece
Klein Moretti (克莱恩·莫雷蒂) is the protagonist of the source material and an NPC in Lord of Mysteries. He is a Seer Pathway Beyonder, founder of the Tarot Club, and the canonical Sequence 0 Fool in the Pathway's god-tier slot. The player is not Klein. The player creates their own Beyonder through Character Creation and encounters Klein through Mr. Fool visions and direct in-game appearances. Official store copy makes the split explicit: the history the player follows is Klein's legend, and the player's own extraordinary story is still theirs to write.
The campaign runs on two parallel lines. A source-faithful line retells Klein's own history beat for beat, and a personal line follows the player's original Beyonder through the present-day city. The two are not the same story and they do not always sit at the same point on the calendar: the player's own induction at the Blackthorn Security Company happens on day one of the personal line, while Klein's induction at the same company is the third chapter of the source-faithful line and arrives later in a player's progression.
Six chapters of the source-faithful line have been named. The English titles below are working renderings of the published Chinese names.
Chapter | Chinese title | Working English title | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | 灰雾之上 | Above the Gray Fog | The opening. See The Gray Fog |
2 | 意外的访客 | The Unexpected Visitor | Repeatable in the launch build's early rotation |
3 | 黑荆棘安保公司 | Blackthorn Security Company | Klein's own join at Blackthorn, a separate beat from the player's day-one induction |
4 | 成为非凡者 | Becoming a Beyonder | Klein's first potion. See Beyonders |
5 | 第一次正式委托 | The First Formal Commission | The kidnapping of a boy named 小艾略特 (Little Elliot) |
6 | 安提哥努斯笔记 | The Antigonus Notebook | Shares its name with a shipped dungeon and with an official trailer |
Further chapters exist but have not been named publicly, and the studio has not published how many the line will run to. Official material also names 密修会, a secret order, as the group behind the Clown and behind the man who tailed Klein before he became a Beyonder.
In the source material, Klein Moretti is a recent graduate of Khoy University, originally from the Backlund-adjacent middle-class. The opening events see Klein's body inhabited by Zhou Mingrui, a modern university student, after a transmigration ritual goes wrong. Zhou inherits Klein's identity, his memories, and a mounting debt; he survives by joining the Tingen Nighthawks under captain Dunn Smith and drinking the Sequence 9 Seer potion. The two identities overlap and merge over the early arcs. See Transmigrators.
The game presents Klein as already established when the player arrives in Tingen. The transmigration backstory is referenced in visions and dialogue but never explained at the introduction; players who have not read the source material learn it gradually. Reports place the player's own line some years after the source material ends, which is why the Tarot Club members the player meets are far further up the ladder than the novel's opening leaves them, but the studio has not published a date.

Klein appears in the player's campaign in three modes:
Mr. Fool visions: cinematic flashbacks to Klein's canonical journey, narrated by Klein in his Mr. Fool persona. Triggered when the player crosses geography or NPCs that overlap Klein's history.
Direct NPC encounters: Klein appears in person at specific story beats, typically as a Nighthawk colleague or as a senior fortune-teller the player consults.
Sefirah Castle ritual cameos: high-Sequence rituals in the player's Divination Club summon Klein in his Mr. Fool persona for short interactions, mirroring the canonical Tarot Club ritual structure.
Klein's codename in the Tarot Club is Mr. Fool. The codename derives from his eventual claim to the Sequence 0 Fool seat; in the early game, the title is treated as honorific and self-given. Within the Tarot Club ritual structure, Klein is the central authority who connects member Beyonders across vast distances and grants them access to Gray Fog commerce.
Klein is a Seer Pathway Beyonder. By the time the player encounters him, he has advanced multiple Sequences past the Sequence 9 Seer entry. His on-screen abilities include cinematic-tier divination, control of the Gray Fog, command of the Tarot Club ritual, and at later story beats outright reality-bending miracles. The game keeps Klein at a deliberately above-the-player power tier so his appearances feel like genuine encounters with a higher-Sequence NPC. See Sequences, where the ladder runs from Sequence 9 at entry down to Sequence 0.
Klein also accumulates two further Pathway claims later in the source material: the 门 (Door) line, which the Apprentice Pathway climbs, and the Visionary side of the Spectator group. Those sit late in the source material's arc and have not been published as launch content.
The player's relationship with Klein is structured as a colleague-and-witness arrangement. Klein is not a companion who joins the player's party; he is a fellow Beyonder who shares the player's space at specific intersections. Cooperation is mutual but indirect: Klein gives the player advice, contracts the player for ritual support, and at one beat prays for the player to a higher-Sequence entity in the Mr. Fool ritual.
Players who name their character Klein Moretti during character creation receive a special introductory cutscene that hand-waves the coincidence. Klein remains his own NPC; the player remains their own original Beyonder. See Player Character.
Since the Y1S1.2 update on September 17, 2026, Klein can also be obtained as a Connection (人脉), one of the historical projections the player recruits through the Connections System. He arrived on the limited banner Tingen's Old Dream (廷根旧梦), where 80 percent of Legendary results are Klein and a Legendary result that is not Klein guarantees him on the next one; when that banner ends he joins the standard banner. His Connection skill, 转运仪式 (Fortune-Turning Ritual), has the player walk four ritual steps in reverse order to unlock a timed damage boost called 灰雾加持 (Gray Fog Blessing). He anchors three bonds: one with Leonard Mitchell and Dunn Smith, one with Audrey Hall and Alger Wilson, and one with Leonard alone. Players who own him can invite him to stroll, go on an invitation and dance through the affinity system.
This does not change the split described above. The Connection is an in-game character card that lends a skill and bonds; the player still plays their own Beyonder, never plays as Klein, and cannot take Klein's Pathway through it.
Klein is also a piece in Fool's Chessboard (愚者棋局), the auto-battler mode added in the same update. The studio's reveal presents him and Roselle Gustav as strong five-cost pieces and invites players to find out whose three-star version is stronger.
The studio has described the game as a long-running live service that adapts the novel's story across successive version updates, with the player's Beyonder journey running alongside Klein's main-storyline thread.
Rather than a single one-time campaign adaptation, the content roadmap is framed as continuous: as the main storyline progresses, later updates are to introduce side stories tied to the current stage of the plot, and characters who appeared only briefly in the source material may gradually step into the spotlight. One such side story has already shipped, following Dunn Smith and Daly in the past. The full first-book adaptation is targeted to span several years of updates, and no schedule of side stories beyond that has been published. See Dev Roadmap.
