Beyonders are people who have gained supernatural powers in Lord of Mysteries. The Beyonder system is core to both the novel and the game.
Overview
In the Lord of Mysteries world, humans can gain supernatural abilities by drinking special potions. Those who successfully digest the potions and gain powers are called Beyonders.
The 22 Pathways
There are 22 Beyonder pathways with different abilities and progression routes. Each pathway has multiple sequences (levels) that Beyonders can advance through. Higher sequences grant stronger abilities.
The Acting Method
To safely digest potions and advance, Beyonders must act according to their pathway's nature. They adopt specific behaviors and mindsets that match their chosen path.
The game uses this as a core mechanic - players adopt personas with abilities based on their pathway choice.
Dangers
Becoming a Beyonder is dangerous. Failing to digest a potion properly can cause madness, loss of control, or transformation into a monster. The danger increases at higher sequences.
Organizations
Several groups recruit and train Beyonders:
- The Nighthawks - A church organization that hunts dangerous Beyonders
- Various secret societies
- Government agencies
In the Game
Players choose pathways and advance through sequences while using the Acting Method to develop their character.
