Unlike many other high-tier equipment pieces, the Pitch Black Plate Cloak of Shadows does not require defeating any enemies or completing any quests. It is obtained purely through exploration and the use of the Force Palm ability to access a hidden underground chamber within the Hoenmark Ruins. This makes it one of the easier pieces of the Armor of the Shadows set to acquire early in the game, provided you have already unlocked Force Palm.

The combined defense of 6 (3 base plus 3 from refinement) makes this a solid defensive piece for the early-to-mid game. Location

The Pitch Black Plate Cloak of Shadows is found inside a hidden chamber in the Hoenmark Ruins, located northwest of Hernand. On the map, the ruins sit near the "H" marker for the Hernand region. The specific spot is an elevated, snow-covered flat section among the ruins where a rectangular floor tile has a noticeably tighter and denser brick pattern compared to the surrounding stonework.

Be aware that the Hoenmark Ruins area is affected by a blizzard, which will deal passive damage over time. It is recommended to bring food or equip ice-resistant gear before heading to this location to offset the cold damage while exploring.

How to Obtain

Requirements

• The Force Palm ability must be unlocked. Force Palm is learned during the Chapter 1 main quest "Traces" when Kliff revisits the Abyss and encounters an Axiom Force puzzle.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Travel northwest from Hernand to the Hoenmark Ruins.

2. Locate the elevated, snow-covered flat section of the ruins. Look for a rectangular floor tile that has a tighter, denser brick pattern than the rest of the stonework.

3. Crouch near the marked tile and use the Force Palm ability on the patterned area. This will break open the floor section.

4. Drop down into the underground chamber below.

5. Open the treasure chest inside the chamber to obtain the Pitch Black Plate Cloak of Shadows.

6. To exit, interact with the candle positioned on the left side of the room. Lighting it triggers a mechanism that lowers the front gate, allowing you to leave without backtracking.

The entire process requires no combat. The only prerequisite is having the Force Palm ability unlocked, which makes this cloak accessible relatively early in the game.

Fire Resistance Lv. 7

The Fire Resistance Lv. 7 bonus on this cloak reduces damage taken from fire-based sources. This includes direct fire attacks from enemies, fire breath from certain bosses, and environmental fire hazards such as burning ground and lava. The resistance is passive and active at all times while the cloak is equipped.

This makes the Pitch Black Plate Cloak of Shadows particularly useful in regions or dungeons where fire damage is prevalent. Players heading into encounters with fire-elemental enemies or exploring volcanic areas will benefit significantly from equipping this cloak.

Most pieces of the set can be obtained through exploration without combat. The notable exception is the Plate Helm of the Shadows, which requires completing Chapter 6 and defeating the boss Beloth the Darksworn at the Hoenmark Ruins.

Tips

• Bring food for the blizzard. The Hoenmark Ruins area has an active blizzard that deals passive cold damage. Bring healing food or equip ice-resistant armor to stay healthy while exploring.

• Look for the brick pattern. The breakable floor tile has a noticeably different brick pattern compared to the surrounding area. If you are having trouble finding it, look for a rectangular section with tighter, denser brickwork on the elevated flat area of the ruins.

• Keep it rather than sell it. While the sell value of 8.29 might seem tempting, the Fire Resistance Lv. 7 bonus provides far more value in actual gameplay, especially during the early-to-mid game where fire damage can be dangerous.

• Pair with other fire-resistant gear. Stacking fire resistance from multiple equipment pieces and the Refinement System can make you highly resistant to fire damage for specific encounters.

• Combine with other Shadow pieces. You can collect the Plate Boots, Plate Armor, and Plate Gloves of the Shadows early on through exploration. The Plate Helm requires reaching Chapter 6.
