TheLightning elementis one of the four primary elements inCrimson Desert, alongsideFire,Ice, andWind. Lightning attacks inflict a paralysis effect on enemies, temporarily striking them and interrupting their actions. Unlike the other elements, lightning has the unique ability to disrupt shielded foes, bypassing defensive postures that would normally block physical strikes. This makes it an essential tool for breaking through heavily guarded enemies.
Lightning skills are channeled through theAxiom Bracelet, a magical device worn byKliffthat allows players to select and switch between elements mid-combat using the radial dial interface. All threeplayable characters(Kliff,Damiane, andOongka) have access to their own lightning-based skills once the element is unlocked.

The lightning element is unlocked by completing thePath of Providencepuzzle chain, which begins at theSpire of the Starsnear theScholastone InstituteinHernand. You first visit this Spire duringChapter 4(theForbidden Knowledgesection), specifically during theSpire of the Starsquest.
The unlock requires clearingfive sequential Abyss islandsin the Path of Providence chain:
Sanctorum of Insight: Platform puzzle using grapple hooks on tower buttons. Use L2/R2 to highlight pillars and ride moving platforms across gaps.
Secret Garden: Laser and reflector puzzle. Move a power source usingAxiom Force, redirect laser beams to hit mirrors, connect a wire on the floor, and activate the Abyss switch.
Vault of Vengeance: RequiresFocused Shotto hit multiple buttons simultaneously. Find two blue cubes to open the entrance, then shoot four targets at once inside the golden room to disable the laser grid protecting theGolden Greed Sword.
Courtyard of Precision: Hit yellow floating platforms with Focused Shot simultaneously across three rounds of increasing difficulty (2 targets, then 3, then 4). A turbine then launches you into the air, where you must mark 3 targets while falling and use anaerial Force Palmto activate the final switch.
TheFocused Shotability is required for the Vault of Vengeance and Courtyard of Precision puzzles. ForKliff, unlocking Focused Shot requiresFocus Level 2andMarksman Level 2on the Spirit Skill Tree, plus 1Abyss Artifact.Damianehas Focused Shot unlocked by default.
After clearing all five islands, the puzzle chain completes andLightning Lv. 1is permanently unlocked. Each character automatically receives their foundational lightning skill: Lightning Surge for Kliff, Lightning Strike for Damiane, and Lightning Pulse for Oongka. Spending 1Abyss Artifactcan then unlockImbue Elementfor further elemental versatility.
Lightning attacks apply aparalysisstatus effect that temporarily stuns enemies, halting their movement and interrupting active attacks. The paralysis duration is shorter than the freeze provided byIceskills, but it activates faster. This makes lightning better suited for quickly interrupting specific enemy attacks rather than creating long vulnerability windows.
One of the most valuable properties of the lightning element is its ability todisrupt shielded enemies. Foes who adopt defensive postures or hold up shields can normally block physical attacks entirely. Lightning strikes bypass these defenses, shocking the enemy through their guard and opening them up for follow-up combos. This is particularly useful against armored human knights and enemies who rely onshieldsas their primary defense.
Several lightning skills have area-of-effect properties, allowing them to hit multiple enemies at once. When fighting groups of closely packed enemies, lightning can fell several targets simultaneously. This crowd-control capability is further amplified when enemies are wet, as the electrical charge can chain between nearby targets.
Each of the three playable characters has access to unique lightning skills through theHealth skill tree. These skills become available once Lightning Lv. 1 is learned. All dedicated lightning skills cost10Spiritto use.
Skill | Character | Description | Unlock Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
Create a field of electricity that damages enemies in the area. | Learn Lightning Lv. 1 | ||
Release electricity into the ground to create a shock area. | Healthtree progression | ||
Release an electric burst from the tip of your sword and shock nearby enemies. | Learn Lightning Lv. 1 | ||
Gather lightning in both hands and electrocute nearby enemies. | Learn Lightning Lv. 1 | ||
ImbueMeteor Kickwith the power of the currently active element, including lightning. | RaiseImbue Elementto Lv. 4 |
In addition,Oongkahas access toRaging Lightning, anArmed Combatskill that rapidly spins his body to slash all enemies nearby. Unlike the elemental lightning skills listed above, Raging Lightning is a physical melee skill available by default and does not require Lightning Lv. 1. Its Lv. 2 proficiency upgrade increases the movement distance during the spin attack.
Beyond dedicated lightning skills, players can imbue existing attacks with the lightning element using theImbue Elementability. This Health tree skill allows you to apply your currently equipped element to various attacks, extending lightning's paralysis and shield-breaking properties to a wider range of combat moves.
To unlock Imbue Element, you must first learn at least one elemental skill at Lv. 1 (such as Lightning Surge,Flame Strike,Frost Mantle, orStorm Veil) and then spend 1Abyss Artifact. TheAxiom Braceletinterface lets you select lightning as your active element, after which your imbued attacks will carry the lightning effect.
Imbue Element has four levels, each unlocking a new imbue-compatible attack:
Level | ||
|---|---|---|
Lv. 1 | ||
Lv. 2 | ||
Lv. 3 | ||
Lv. 4 |
When lightning is the active element, all of these imbued attacks gain the paralysis effect and shield-disruption property, making the Imbue Element system a powerful way to weave lightning damage into your regular combat flow.
The lightning element has a powerful synergy with wet conditions. IfKliffor an enemy is wet (from rain, standing in a river, or other water sources),lightning skills deal 50% more damageand gain a chance to chain to nearby targets. This interaction makes lightning significantly stronger during rainy weather or near bodies of water.
In contrast, wet conditions severely reduce the effectiveness ofFireskills, so switching to lightning during rainstorms is a sound tactical decision. Players who pay attention to theweather systemcan exploit these environmental factors for a substantial damage boost.
Lightning andIcecomplement each other when used sequentially. Ice attacks can freeze enemies solid or create ice platforms on water surfaces. Shattering an ice platform near enemies will leave them wet, setting up the perfect condition for follow-up lightning attacks that deal bonus damage and chain to adjacent targets.
Lightning is particularly effective againstmechanical enemiesandarmored human knights. The paralysis effect disrupts mechanical constructs more reliably than other elements, and the shield-disruption property makes it the ideal counter against enemies who hide behind heavy armor and shields.
Marni's Excavatronis a mechanical boss encountered during theEstate in Dismayquestline atKarin Quarry. As a mining machine, it is susceptible to electrical attacks.
Armored knights encountered in faction-related combat respond poorly to lightning. UsingLightning Oilon your blade before engaging armored human knights is a recommended tactic.
Shielded enemies in general are vulnerable to lightning's guard-breaking property, making it the go-to element whenever physical attacks are being blocked.
Enemies and bosses that use lightning attacks can be mitigated by equippingcloakswithLight Resistance(the in-game term for lightning resistance). Unlike otherarmorpieces that primarily increase raw defense, cloaks are defined by their elemental resistance stats. Leather cloaks tend to provide the best lightning protection.
Cloak | Type | Light Resistance |
|---|---|---|
Lv. 3 | ||
Lv. 3 | ||
Lv. 3 |
It is recommended to keep at least one leather cloak with Light Resistance in your inventory for encounters against lightning-based bosses and environmental hazards. Cloth cloaks tend to offerIce Resistance, while plate cloaks lean towardFire Resistance, so maintaining one of each type gives you the flexibility to adapt to different elemental threats.
Players can applyLightning Oilto their weapon to add lightning damage to regular melee attacks without needing to use Spirit or activate elemental skills. This is a consumable item that provides a temporary lightning coating, making it a convenient option for characters who have not yet unlocked lightning through the skill tree.
Lightning Oil is especially recommended for fights against armored human knights, where the shield-disruption property helps break through their defenses. The oil's effect also benefits from the wet-condition damage bonus, so applying it before a fight in the rain or near water maximizes its value.
Fight in the rain.When it rains, both you and your enemies become wet. Lightning skills deal 50% more damage against wet targets and can chain to nearby enemies, turning rainy weather into a massive advantage for lightning-focused builds.
Prioritize lightning against shielded foes.If an enemy is blocking your physical attacks with a shield, switch to lightning. Its guard-breaking property will shock through their defense and open them up for combos.
Combine Ice and Lightning.Freeze an enemy withIceattacks, then shatter the ice with a follow-up strike. The resulting wetness makes the target take bonus lightning damage from your next attack.
Use Lightning Oil early.Before you unlock lightning through theAbyssskill tree, Lightning Oil lets you apply electrical damage to your weapon. Stock up fromvendorsand use it against armored knights.
Invest in Imbue Element.LevelingImbue Elementto Lv. 4 unlocks Elemental Meteor Kick, which lets you deal devastating lightning damage with one of the game's most powerful aerial attacks.
Carry a leather cloak.When facing lightning-based enemies, swap to a leathercloakwith Light Resistance to significantly reduce incoming electrical damage.
Watch for environmental water.Rivers, puddles, and flooded areas all count as wet conditions. Lure enemies into or near water before unleashing lightning attacks for the 50% damage bonus.
Community tier discussions across community walkthroughs andAbyss Gearbuild videos placeLightning Elementat roughly C-tier in the current state of the game. The reasoning is consistent across creators: the element is easy to find, the imbued stagger bonus is genuine, but the signature effect (paralysis or a full stun) only procs reliably on trash mobs. MostBossesin Pywell have a stun threshold high enough that a single imbued rotation rarely pushes them into the spasm state, so the crowd-control fantasy that players chase with lightning mostly fails in the encounters where it would matter most.
A common verdict from the community is that lightning is a clear upgrade over using no element at all, because even the raw stagger gain on large hordes is noticeable. It is, however, weaker thanFire ElementandFrost Elementfor boss damage, and its dedicated skillLightning Surgeis widely considered one of the worst skills in the elemental suite: the channel window is long, the area is small, and players are locked in place while enemies punish them.
Orbs of Lightning:Orbs of Lightningscatters orbs around the point of damage that drop onto nearby targets. Because the orbs do not track, most of them miss on single-target fights and only connect during dense crowd pulls. Treat it as a filler proc slot rather than a core damage gear.
Storm Fang:Storm Fangsends chaining lightning bolts that consistently stun trash mobs and elite groups. This is the stronger of the two lightning-specific gears and is the reason to keep lightning equipped duringFort Liberationand other add-heavy objectives. Against solo bosses the chain is wasted and the stun rarely lands.
Lightning Surge as a skill:Functional on grouped humanoid enemies with low stun resistance, but hazardous to channel during boss phases because it roots you in place.
Lightning earns its spot when the fight is add-heavy and you want to stack stuns and stagger across many targets rather than maximize single-target burst. Pair it withStorm Fangfor chain stuns and keepFlame StrikeorStorm Veiloff-element so you still have a spam option and an emergency escape. For dedicated boss builds the community consensus is to swap toFire Elementand route lightning exclusively for world content.
The lightning element has a dedicated two-piece abyss gear pair that defines the loadout:Storm FangandOrbs of Lightning. Each gear addresses a different half of the lightning combat profile, and the two were designed to slot together.
Acquisition | Effect on Lightning Imbue | |
|---|---|---|
Reward from defeating the boss at the end of the 5-of-6 and 6-of-6Hernandian Parish of Solumenquests; unlocked by the priest's note at theChurch of Hernand. See theMysterious Arrowquest for the trigger. | Lightning bolt strikes the target and chains through nearby enemies | |
Direct purchase from theBack Alley ShopinPailune. Also drops from the Chapter 7 main story boss as backup. | Auto-fires tracking shock projectiles duringTurning Slashwhile lightning is the active imbue |
Equipped together with the lightning element active, the two gears form a passive AoE stunlock loop. Each Turning Slash with lightning imbue spawns Orbs of Lightning tracking projectiles, every one of which can land a lightning bolt that Storm Fang then chains to the surrounding pack. The player focuses the main target with Turning Slash, and the surrounding mob takes shock damage andShockedstatus from the chain reactions without any extra inputs.
Because both abyss gears only fire while lightning is the imbued element, many players consolidate the pair onto a single armor piece. Visit any of theWitch's Workshopsto extract the abyss gears from their default carriers and re-embed both Storm Fang and Orbs of Lightning into a single pair of gloves or boots. With both gears on one slot, a single equipment swap activates the entire lightning kit. The same player can keep a different pair holding the fire pair, frost pair, or wind pair, and swap loadouts mid-combat to change elements without touching the bracelet.
The pair leaves the weapon socket free, which is where theElectro-Mecha Longswordcomes in. The longsword carries its own built-in lightning passive that adds extra lightning ticks to weapon swings even outside abyss gear procs. Running Electro-Mecha Longsword alongside the Storm Fang plus Orbs of Lightning pair stacks three independent lightning triggers in one loadout: the longsword's passive, the orb auto-fire, and the chain bolt. The combination is a recurring recommendation for any lightning-focused build because each trigger procs independently from the others, so the per-second lightning damage stays high regardless of which combo the player is in.
Source | Trigger | Lightning Output |
|---|---|---|
Standard weapon swings while lightning imbue is active | Continuous lightning passive damage built into the weapon | |
Each Turning Slash with lightning imbue | Tracking shock projectiles around the player | |
Lightning-imbued attacks consume Spirit | Lightning bolt that strikes the target and chains to nearby enemies |
Players who want to mix non-element abyss gears into the same loadout can keep two of the four armor sockets dedicated to the lightning pair and slot generic damage modifiers likeMomentumorRelentlessinto the remaining slots. Those gears do not depend on the active imbue, so they continue to deliver value even when the player swaps off lightning for a fight that calls for a different element.
TheSpire of the Starsnear theScholastone Institutegates the entire Lightning unlock. You first ascend the Spire as part ofForbidden Knowledgein Chapter 4, but the gateway to the Abyss islands above the Spire is not opened by the main story. After the Chapter 4 sequence ends, return to the Spire, ride the elevator with the symbol-matching puzzle, and use the gate at the top to teleport up. The puzzle on the elevator is solved by punching each side-room socket withForce Palm, picking up the revealed parts, and inserting them next to the elevator. The wall hourglass, circle, and triangle symbols on each side of the lift indicate the notches the matching levers must lock into.
None of the items below are strictly required, but skipping them turns several of the later puzzles into endurance tests. Treat the table below as a minimum loadout before stepping onto the first abyss island.
Requirement | Why It Matters | Where to Get It |
|---|---|---|
StaminaLv.5 minimum | Several gaps between platforms only close with a triple-jump glide; with under five points the glide will end short. | Spend skill points in the Stamina branch. |
Required for Vault of Vengeance and Courtyard of Precision. The puzzle gates only release when multiple buttons are tagged and shot simultaneously. | Reach Focus Lv.2 and Marksman Lv.2 on the skill tree, then spend one Abyss Artifact to unlock Focused Shot. | |
Aerial Maneuver upgrade forAxiom Force | Smooths out the long jumps between platforms when stamina is tight. | Skill tree upgrade purchased once Axiom Force is leveled. |
Doubles glide speed; helpful for the long traversal between Sanctorum of Insight and Secret Garden. | ||
Lets you press distant buttons and reseat the laser chips from a safe platform without dropping into the void. | Skill tree upgrade for Axiom Force. |
On the first island, the platforms surrounding the central tower are dark by default. Grapple onto the small button on the side of each ring tower, then cycle the highlight with L2 and R2 until the column you want to ride to lights up. Activating the chosen tower pulls a platform from its column to the column you are standing on, letting you ride across the gap. Three tower rotations are enough to reach the back of the island, where the sky-island button waits behind the altar. Climb up, hit the button with a jumping aerial Force Palm, and the cutscene that follows is the only mandatory story beat on this chain. After the cutscene the island teleports you out; map back to it to continue.
The Secret Garden routes a glowing chip through three reflection points to power the central turbine. Pull the chip out of its starting socket withAxiom Force, drag it back toward the orb that fires the original laser, then climb up and slot it into the leaf-marked anchor. Once both reflectors are lit, grapple the back of one orb and rotate it with the D-pad until the laser ricochets to the second mirror. Both orbs lit activates the turbine; glide up the turbine, connect the floor wire near the altar by holding the prompt down, then jump-punch the lift button and collect the abyss artifact.
Two glowing blue cubes flank the entrance statues. Pick them up and slot them into the matching squares to lower the entrance barricade. Inside, two wall switches must be tagged with Focused Shot (R1 to mark each, release to fire) and triggered together. Past that gate, the golden room contains four switches; mark all four in one Focus window and release. Solving it lowers the laser grid, exposes theGolden Greed Swordand a teleport pad. The pad lifts you into a laser-corridor section. Sprint and dodge through it; food helps if you take a hit. At the back of the corridor, plant the laser chip into the wall slot with a Force Current, ride the teleporter back up, and hit the altar to claim the third skill point.
This is the final island and the only one that unlocks Lightning Lv.1. The puzzle plays in three escalating rounds. Around the outer ring, multi-target groups of two then three then four yellow markers spawn; each round, mark every yellow target inside one Focus window and release simultaneously. After the four-target round triggers the central turbine, glide into the middle and let the turbine launch you upward. While falling back down past the two stacked rings, mark all three yellow buttons on each ring with Focused Shot, release, and finish with an aerial Force Palm on the lit altar button. Spirit will run out fast; land between attempts and use Focus Mode to refill if needed. Clearing the Courtyard awards Lightning Lv.1 permanently, plus the abyss artifact for completing the full chain.
Completing the Courtyard of Precision teaches each playable character their foundational lightning skill automatically:
Character | Lightning Skill | Unlock Cost |
|---|---|---|
Auto-granted with Lightning Lv.1 | ||
