Overview
Oongka is the third and final playable character in Crimson Desert. He first becomes controllable during Chapter 7: Homecoming after a scripted boss encounter at Ashclaw Keep. Unlike Damiane, whose unlock is entirely automatic, Oongka requires you to complete a specific side quest to gain permanent access. If you skip that quest, he stays locked for the rest of the playthrough.
Unlock Requirements
Oongka's unlock happens in two stages: a temporary story-driven unlock during Chapter 7, and a permanent unlock through a side quest afterward.
Stage 1: Temporary Unlock (Chapter 7)
Progress through the main story until you reach Chapter 7: Homecoming.
During the chapter, Kliff confronts the boss Myurdin inside Ashclaw Keep.
After the fight, Ludvig ambushes Kliff from behind and pushes him off a cliff, leaving him critically injured.
Kliff wakes up in bed with Oongka at his side. Oongka insists that Kliff rest while he tracks down Ludvig to seek revenge.
The game transfers control to Oongka for the remainder of the chapter. You play as him through several combat encounters.
This temporary control segment introduces Oongka's moveset and weapons. However, once the chapter ends, he becomes locked again unless you complete the follow-up quest.
Stage 2: Permanent Unlock (Side Quest)
After the Chapter 7 events conclude, check your quest journal immediately.
Look for the side quest "Gentle Sound of Flowing River."
Complete this quest to permanently unlock Oongka as a playable character.
Once the quest is finished, Oongka appears on the Character Wheel and can be selected freely during open world exploration.
Do Not Miss This Quest
Warning: The main story pushes forward aggressively after Chapter 7. The quest "Gentle Sound of Flowing River" is easy to overlook because it is a side quest, not a main story objective. If you skip it and continue the main storyline, Oongka remains locked permanently for that playthrough. Check your quest journal right after the Ashclaw Keep events.

Starting Weapons
When you first take control of Oongka during Chapter 7, he comes equipped with:
Weapon | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Dekarr Greataxe | Two-Handed Axe | Heavy melee weapon with wide sweeping attacks and ground slams |
Orc Blaster | Hand Cannon | Ranged explosive weapon that deals area damage to groups of enemies |
Oongka specializes in heavy two-handed weapons. He can equip greataxes, hammers, and hand cannons. His greataxe scales significantly better in his hands than it does when used by Kliff, making raw physical damage his primary strength.
Oongka's Playstyle
Oongka is the heavy hitter of the three playable characters. He deals the most damage per swing, has the highest natural defense, and can power through enemy attacks using his Rage mechanic. The trade-off is low agility. He is slow to dodge, slow to reposition, and vulnerable to fast, mobile bosses that punish his long attack animations.
Key Strengths
Raw damage: Highest single-hit and area damage of all three characters. His greataxe combos hit everything in front of him.
Rage (super armor): When Rage is active, Oongka ignores enemy attacks entirely. You can stand in the middle of a mob and keep swinging without being staggered.
Rampage: A signature ability that cleaves through groups of enemies in rapid succession. Excellent for clearing large packs.
Dual two-handed weapons: Oongka is the only character who can dual-wield two-handed weapons simultaneously, a feat unique to his orc strength.
Hand Cannon AoE: The Hand Cannon fires explosive rounds that damage all enemies in an area. It is the only AoE firearm in the game.
Key Weaknesses
Low agility: His dodge is short and slow. Fast bosses that require constant repositioning are difficult.
Long recovery frames: Many of his heavy attacks leave him locked in animation for extended periods.
No Abyss puzzle access: Like Damiane, Oongka cannot interact with Abyss puzzles. Only Kliff has this ability.
Late availability: You do not gain access to Oongka until roughly the midpoint of the game, so there is less time to develop his skill trees before endgame.
Skill Trees
Oongka has the same three-branch skill tree structure as the other characters (Stamina, Spirit, Health), though his specific skills lean toward brute force and area control rather than precision or evasion.
Stamina tree: Focuses on weapon mastery, extended combos, and raw attack scaling.
Spirit tree: Contains Rage duration upgrades, armor-rending abilities, and the Rampage skill.
Health tree: Includes defensive bonuses, the Jetpack traversal ability, and Orc Blaster enhancements like Scatter Shot.
Remember that all three playable characters share a single Abyss Artifact skill point pool. Budget your points carefully so that Kliff remains strong enough for mandatory story encounters.
How to Switch to Oongka
After permanently unlocking Oongka through the "Gentle Sound of Flowing River" quest, you can switch to him during free roam using the character switching system:
Keyboard: Press and hold F1 to open the Character Wheel. Select Oongka and release.
Controller: Hold Up on the D-Pad to open the Character Wheel. Use the Right Stick to highlight Oongka, then release.
Switching to Oongka teleports you to his last known location. If he is nearby, the swap happens instantly without a loading transition. You cannot switch characters during main story missions or boss fights.
Tips
Complete "Gentle Sound of Flowing River" immediately after Chapter 7. Do not advance the main story first, or you risk missing the quest and losing Oongka permanently.
Open fights with the Orc Blaster to soften groups at range, then close in with the greataxe for heavy melee follow-ups.
Activate Rage before engaging large groups. The super armor lets you land full combo chains without interruption.
Use Oongka for mob-clearing content like camps, dungeons with many weaker enemies, and siege encounters. His area damage shines in these scenarios.
For fast, agile bosses that dodge frequently, consider switching back to Kliff or Damiane. Oongka's slow attacks can whiff against mobile targets.
