The Boarhound is a large, muscular dog breed available as a tameable companion in Crimson Desert. Boarhounds are one of the most common dog breeds found throughout Pywel, appearing in virtually every region on the map. Their sturdy build and loyal temperament make them a popular early-game pet choice for players exploring the open world. Like all pets in Crimson Desert, Boarhounds are tamed through the trust system, which requires building a bond through petting and feeding until the animal's trust reaches 100.
Once registered, a Boarhound follows the player when summoned and automatically collects loot from defeated enemies, picks up resources during gathering, and retrieves items from destructible objects. Boarhounds come in multiple coat variations, giving players a range of appearances to choose from. A younger version of this breed, the Boarhound Puppy, can also be found and tamed separately.

Unlike many pet breeds that only appear in specific areas, the Boarhound is found universally across all regions of Pywel. This makes the Boarhound one of the easiest dog breeds to locate, as players will encounter stray Boarhounds near towns, along roads, and around settlements throughout the game world.
Boarhounds frequently appear near major settlements such as Hernand and in the surrounding countryside. Players exploring Shakarune, Turina, and other regions will also spot Boarhounds roaming near villages and guard posts. If you do not see a Boarhound at a particular location, walk far enough away from the area to leave its render distance, then return. The game will re-roll the animal spawns in that zone, and a Boarhound may appear on your next visit.

Boarhounds come in several different coat color and pattern variations. Each time the spawn location resets, the game can produce a dog with a different appearance. All variations share the same stats and abilities; the only difference is cosmetic. Players who want a specific look may need to reset the area multiple times until the desired variation spawns.

Taming a Boarhound requires raising its trust from 0 to 100 using the pet trust system. Because of daily caps on trust-building actions, the process takes a minimum of two in-game days. Below is a step-by-step walkthrough.
Find a Boarhound. Locate a stray Boarhound in any region of Pywel. They frequently appear near towns and along roads.
Pet it five times. Approach the Boarhound and hold the interaction button to pet it. Each pet grants +5 trust. You can pet a dog up to five times per in-game day, earning a maximum of +25 trust from petting alone.
Feed it Lean Bird Meat. Open your inventory and discard Lean Bird Meat on the ground near the Boarhound. This is the Boarhound's favorite food and grants +35 trust per feeding. One feeding of Lean Bird Meat brings your day-one total from 25 to 60.
Feed a second item. If you have another trust item available, such as a Small Bone (+25) or Large Bone (+25), drop it near the dog. This can bring your total close to the daily feeding cap of 50 trust from food. Depending on the combination, you may end day one with 75 trust.
Wait for the daily reset. Once you have reached the daily trust cap, you must wait until midnight (the start of a new in-game day) to continue. Stay near the Boarhound or keep it in a confined area so it does not wander away.
Pet it five more times. After midnight, the daily petting counter resets. Pet the Boarhound five times for +25 trust.
Feed until trust reaches 100. Drop additional food items near the dog until its trust reaches 100. If you ended day one at 75, you only need to reach 100 with petting and one small feeding.
Register the dog. At 100 trust, a new interaction prompt appears. Hold the button and select "Take In" to permanently register the Boarhound as your pet. It will be added to your pet roster under the Pets tab in your inventory.
Action | Trust Gained | Running Total | Day |
|---|---|---|---|
Pet x5 | +25 | 25 | Day 1 |
Feed Lean Bird Meat x1 | +35 | 60 | Day 1 |
Feed Small Bone x1 | +25 (capped at 50 feeding) | 75 | Day 1 |
(Daily cap reached) | - | 75 | Day 1 |
Pet x5 (after midnight) | +25 | 100 | Day 2 |
Take In | - | 100 (Registered) | Day 2 |
The following items can be fed to a Boarhound to increase its trust level. Items are grouped by trust value. The Boarhound's favorite food is Lean Bird Meat, which grants the highest trust gain at +35 per feeding. Cooked dishes made with a Field Iron Griddle or Field Cooking Pot grant +20 trust each, while raw ingredients like Meat, Bird Meat, Fruit, Vegetables, and Dairy Products grant +10 trust each.
There is a daily cap of 50 trust from feeding. Strategically using the highest-value items first will minimize the number of days required to reach 100 trust.
Item | Trust | Notes |
|---|---|---|
+35 | Favorite food; highest trust gain per item | |
+25 | Commonly dropped by animals | |

Pet equipment can be purchased at Tailor Shops found in Pororin Village and in the southeastern corner of Demeniss. Some outfits may also become available through quest rewards or special events.
Once registered as a pet, the Boarhound provides several passive benefits while summoned. All pet breeds in Crimson Desert share the same core abilities, so the Boarhound functions identically to other dogs and cats in terms of gameplay utility.
Ability | Description |
|---|---|
Auto-Loot (Combat) | The Boarhound automatically runs across the battlefield and picks up loot dropped by defeated enemies, including equipment, materials, and consumables. |
Resource Pickup (Harvesting) | When the player harvests ores, chops trees, or gathers herbs, the Boarhound collects the dropped resources automatically. This saves significant time during gathering runs. |
Destructible Object Pickup | The Boarhound gathers items from destructible objects and environmental containers the player breaks during exploration. |
Exploration Companion | The Boarhound follows the player across all regions of Pywel while summoned, staying close during travel. |
Pets pick up everything without any loot filter, which means your inventory can fill up quickly with low-value items. Managing inventory regularly is recommended when exploring with a summoned pet.
Pets are invulnerable during combat. Enemies cannot target or damage your summoned Boarhound, so there is no risk of losing it in a fight. Players can register up to 30 pets total, but only one pet can be actively summoned at any time.
The Boarhound Puppy is the younger variant of the Boarhound breed. Boarhound Puppies share the same trust items, equipment, and abilities as their adult counterparts but have a smaller, more compact appearance. They can be found in the same regions as adult Boarhounds and are tamed using the same process. The Boarhound Puppy comes in its own set of coat variations, distinct from the adult Boarhound variants.
Choosing between a Boarhound and a Boarhound Puppy is purely a cosmetic preference. Both function identically once registered as pets. Players who prefer a smaller companion may opt for the puppy version, while those who want a larger, more imposing dog can stick with the adult Boarhound.
Stock up on Lean Bird Meat. Since Lean Bird Meat is the Boarhound's favorite food and grants +35 trust per feeding, always carry several portions when heading out to tame one. You can obtain Lean Bird Meat by hunting birds or purchasing it from butchers.
Use bones for a quick boost. Small Bones and Large Bones each grant +25 trust and are commonly dropped by animals. Combining bones with Lean Bird Meat lets you maximize your daily feeding cap efficiently.
Craft Companionship enchants. Applying a Companionship enchant on Abyss gear increases the rate at which you gain trust with pets. The Solidarity enchant increases trust gain with all NPCs and animals, which is also helpful.
Keep the dog nearby. While building trust over multiple days, stay near the Boarhound or lure it into a building or enclosed area to prevent it from wandering away or despawning.
Reset spawns for specific variants. If you want a particular coat variation, leave the area until you are out of render distance, then return. The game re-rolls animal spawns each time, so you can repeat this until the desired variant appears.
Boarhounds are everywhere. Unlike breeds like the Jindo or Floppy-Eared Bulldog that only spawn in specific regions, Boarhounds appear across all of Pywel. You do not need to travel to any particular location to find one.
