Corruption is a weapon effect in Windrose applied by Plague-themed weapons. Unlike Bleeding, which targets enemies for damage-over-time, Corruption accumulates on the WIELDER as a resource that powers a devastating F-attack at 5 stacks.
Two different things in Windrose use the word corruption, and it helps to keep them apart. This page's primary subject is the weapon Corruption resource that builds on the wielder. Separately, the world has an environmental Wood Plague hazard in the Cursed Swamps, covered in its own section below. They share the plague theme but are unrelated systems mechanically.
Mechanics
Attribute | Details |
|---|---|
Accumulation | 1 stack per successful melee hit |
Max stacks | 5 |
At 5 stacks | Unlocks F-attack with weapon-specific effect |
Between fights | Resets when combat ends |
Plague Halberd (Primary Source)
The Plague Halberd is the primary Corruption-applying weapon. Both Rare and Epic versions accumulate stacks the same way, but the F-attack effects differ:
Rarity | F-Attack (at 5 Corruption stacks) |
|---|---|
Rare | Lower-value damage and debuff effect on release |
Epic | Deals Crude damage; restores 35% of max Health |
The Epic Plague Halberd's 35 percent HP restore at 5 stacks makes it one of the strongest sustain tools in the game, particularly for aggressive builds that expect to take hits in prolonged fights. Ascending a Rare Plague Halberd to Epic with Tumbaga Ingot is one of the highest-value upgrades available.
Arboris Saber
The Arboris Saber is a Cursed Swamps plague weapon that channels plague energy for its special attack. It belongs to the same Plague family as the Plague Halberd and Plague Pistol, and feeds the wielder-side Plague Echoes stack rather than a separate counter. The shared lore between Plague weapons, the Cursed Swamps biome, and the High Priestess boss means more Corruption-tier weapons may arrive during Early Access.
Wood Plague (Environmental Corruption)
Beyond the weapon resource, the Cursed Swamps contain tainted forest zones where a Wood Plague meter fills the entire time you stand in the corrupted area. A red bar climbs on screen, and if it reaches its cap the plague kills you and sends you back to your last revival point. Objects inside the zone visibly look diseased, which is the cue that the meter is active.
There are two reliable ways to manage it. First, step in and out of the infected ground to bleed the meter back down between gathering runs. Second, equip a sun ring: the Major Sun Ring cuts Wood Plague build-up by roughly 45 percent, nearly doubling your safe window, and the lesser Minor Sun Ring offers a smaller reduction. Together these turn the tainted forest from an instant death trap into a workable farming zone, which matters because the deep swamp is where plague gear such as the Plague Halberd is sourced.
Exact accumulation and reduction figures can shift with balance patches during Early Access, so treat the percentages as the current ballpark rather than a fixed constant.
Tactical Use
Save the F-attack for moments where you are at low HP and need the 35% restore (Epic Plague Halberd)
Halberd reach lets you accumulate Corruption stacks across multiple targets safely
Corruption does not carry between fights, so engage extended encounters rather than hit-and-run skirmishes
Pair with Crusher-branch talents (Bonecrusher +3-9% crude, Massive +5-10% two-handed) for maximum damage
Lore Connection
Corruption is thematically linked to the Cursed Swamps biome and the High Priestess boss. The Plague Halberd's in-game description, "Wounds the body, destroys the soul," positions Corruption as one manifestation of the supernatural corruption spreading through the Windrose world.
