Overview

Water Spinach is a vegetable crop in Starsand Island, described in-game as "a leafy vegetable with hollow stems, packed with a wealth of essential nutrients!" It is one of the earliest crops you can grow, unlocking at the Apprentice Farmer tier of the Farming profession. Water Spinach grows exclusively during Summer, matures in just 1 day, and produces 4 Water Spinach per harvest.

With its extremely fast growth cycle and decent yield, Water Spinach is a strong early crop for building income during your first Summer on the island. It is also a versatile ingredient in cooking. Stir-Fried Water Spinach is one of the simplest dishes you can prepare, requiring nothing but the harvested crop itself. Water Spinach can also be pickled, separated into Vegetable Juice, or ground back into seeds.

One notable feature of Water Spinach is that it can be planted on both regular Farmland and Paddy Fields. This flexibility means you can grow it wherever you have available space, whether on standard tilled soil or in flooded paddy plots alongside crops like Rice and Sugarcane.

How to Obtain Seeds

Water Spinach Seeds are sold by Graminova at the Happiness Seed Shop for 65 Coins per seed bag. You must reach the Apprentice Farmer tier before Water Spinach Seeds appear in the shop inventory.

To unlock Apprentice Farmer, complete the Novice Farmer trial quests given by Graminova. Once you earn the Apprentice Farmer certification, Water Spinach Seeds (along with other Apprentice-tier seeds like Cabbage, Corn, and Lettuce) become permanently available for purchase.

Seeds are not locked by season at the point of purchase. You can buy Water Spinach Seeds during any season and stockpile them for the next Summer planting window. This is a smart strategy near the end of Spring when you want to prepare for the upcoming growing season.

An alternative way to obtain Water Spinach Seeds is through the Grinder. Loading Water Spinach into the Grinder will produce Water Spinach Seeds, allowing you to recycle part of your harvest back into planting material. The Grinder unlocks at the Senior Farmer tier. You can also occasionally find seeds through general exploration by chopping trees and shrubs, foraging weeds, and opening Treasure Chests scattered across the island.

Growing Water Spinach

Water Spinach grows on regular tilled Farmland or in Paddy Fields. It does not require a Trellis or any other specialized structure beyond standard soil. To plant Water Spinach on Farmland, till a plot of soil with your Hoe, select Water Spinach Seeds from your inventory, and place them on the tilled tile. For Paddy Fields, simply plant the seeds into the flooded plot.

Once planted, Water Spinach takes just 1 day to fully mature, making it one of the fastest-growing crops in the game. Water the crop daily for it to grow on schedule. If you skip a day of watering, growth will stall until the next time you water it. When using Paddy Fields, the standing water handles irrigation automatically, so you do not need to water manually.

Water Spinach is a single-harvest crop. After you pick the 4 Water Spinach, the plant is consumed and the tile becomes empty. You must replant from seed if you want to continue growing Water Spinach in that spot. This differs from trellis crops like Tomato or Cucumber that regrow after harvest.

Seasonal Availability

Water Spinach grows only in Summer. Each season lasts 28 in-game days. With a 1-day growth cycle, you can theoretically complete up to 28 plantings within a single Summer season if you replant immediately after each harvest. In practice, keeping your farm fully stocked and replanting promptly will let you get the most out of the season.

Because Water Spinach is limited to a single season, plan your planting carefully. Start early on day 1 of Summer and keep your plots busy throughout the entire month. Even on the last day of Summer, a freshly planted Water Spinach seed will mature in time if the season does not change before the 1-day growth period completes.

Paddy Field Advantage

Growing Water Spinach in Paddy Fields has a practical advantage over standard Farmland: you do not need to water the crop manually. Paddy Fields keep the soil permanently flooded, which counts as watering. This saves time and stamina, especially if you are growing Water Spinach alongside other paddy crops like Rice. If you have spare Paddy Field plots during Summer, planting Water Spinach there is an efficient way to maximize those spaces.

Sell Prices

Each Water Spinach sells for 24 Coins. Since one seed (65 Coins) produces 4 Water Spinach, a single harvest yields 96 Coins in revenue, for a net profit of 31 Coins per seed. Over the 1-day growth cycle, that works out to 31 Coins of profit per day per plot.

While the raw profit per harvest is modest, the speed of the growth cycle makes Water Spinach competitive with other Apprentice-tier crops. You can complete many more harvests in the same time window compared to slower crops, which adds up over the course of Summer.

For higher returns, consider selling your harvest to the Merchant Ship when it docks at Starsand Town. The Merchant Ship pays roughly double the standard vendor price for all goods, which would push Water Spinach revenue to around 48 Coins per unit. Timing your harvests to coincide with the ship's visits maximizes your earnings.

Recipes Using Water Spinach

Water Spinach is used as a cooking ingredient in two recipes. The table below lists each recipe, its required ingredients, the cooking station, cooking time, and sell price.

Stir-Fried Water Spinach is the more profitable option and one of the simplest recipes in the game. It uses only 4 Water Spinach with no additional ingredients, making it a convenient way to add value to your harvest. The sell price of 81 Coins minus the 65 Coin seed cost gives a net profit of 16 Coins on top of the cooking experience gained. It also restores 58 stamina when eaten, making it a solid field snack.

The Stir-Fried Water Spinach recipe is found in a treasure chest located southwest of the Aureleaf Kitchen. You will need to discover and open this chest before the recipe becomes available in your cooking menu.

Harvest Harmony is a seasonal recipe obtained from the Spring Festival Event. It combines 1 Cabbage and 1 Water Spinach for a quick 31-second cook, selling for 52 Coins and restoring 44 stamina. While the sell price is lower, the fast cooking time and cheap ingredient cost make it a reasonable choice when you have both crops on hand.

Processing Options

Beyond cooking, Water Spinach can be processed at three different stations to produce useful materials.

Pickled Water Spinach is produced at the Pickling Jar, which unlocks at the Intermediate Farmer tier. The pickling process combines Water Spinach with a Salt Brick to create a preserved vegetable with a tangy, fermented flavor. Pickled Water Spinach can be used as an ingredient in other recipes or given as a gift.

Processing Water Spinach at the Separator yields 2 Vegetable Juice per Water Spinach. Vegetable Juice is one of the most commonly required cooking ingredients in the game, appearing in numerous recipes. If you have a surplus of Water Spinach and need Vegetable Juice, this is an efficient way to convert your extra harvests into a useful ingredient.

The Grinder converts Water Spinach back into Water Spinach Seeds. This is useful once you reach Senior Farmer and want to cut down on seed purchases from the shop. By grinding a portion of each harvest, you can maintain a self-sustaining seed supply.

Everlasting Water Spinach Seeds

Like all crops in Starsand Island, Water Spinach has an Everlasting variant. Everlasting Water Spinach Seeds produce a plant that does not disappear after harvest. Instead, the crop regrows and can be harvested again without replanting, eliminating the need to buy new seeds each cycle.

There are several ways to obtain Everlasting Water Spinach Seeds:

• Islandpedia Rewards: Completing certain entries in the Plants section of the Islandpedia may reward you with Everlasting Seeds for specific crops.

• Eternal Blessings Skill: The Senior Farmer tier unlocks the Eternal Blessings skill, which gives a chance of receiving an Everlasting Seed when harvesting any regular crop. The higher your farming proficiency, the better the odds.

• Random Harvest Drops: Occasionally, harvesting a normal Water Spinach plant will yield an Everlasting Water Spinach Seed alongside the regular produce.

Everlasting Seeds are safe to relocate. If you remove an Everlasting crop from its plot, the seed returns to your inventory so you can replant it elsewhere without losing your investment. Over time, building up a collection of Everlasting Water Spinach Seeds lets you maintain a permanent Water Spinach field that produces vegetables every day without any ongoing seed costs. Given Water Spinach's 1-day growth cycle, Everlasting Seeds are especially valuable here since you would otherwise need to replant and rebuy seeds every single day.

Water Spinach is a moderately popular gift item among island residents and animals. Giving Water Spinach to a character who loves it provides a significant boost to your friendship level. Below are the known preferences.

Since Graminova loves Water Spinach and she is the Farming profession mentor, gifting her Water Spinach is a convenient way to raise friendship while you are already visiting the Happiness Seed Shop to buy seeds. Marston, Matilda, and Sagewood are also good gifting targets if you encounter them during your daily routine.

Comparison with Similar Apprentice Crops

Water Spinach is one of several crops available at the Apprentice Farmer tier. The table below compares it with other Apprentice crops to help you decide how to allocate your farm space during Summer.

Water Spinach edges out Cabbage in daily profit (31g/day vs 23g/day) thanks to a slightly higher sell price per unit (24g vs 22g), despite sharing the same 1-day growth time, yield of 4, and seed cost of 65g. However, Cabbage has the advantage of growing across two seasons (Summer and Autumn), giving it a longer overall planting window. If you are farming exclusively in Summer, Water Spinach is the better earner. If you want consistency through Autumn as well, Cabbage carries over while Water Spinach does not.

Corn takes 2 days to grow and yields fewer units (3), but each unit sells at a higher price (44g). Its daily profit of 23.5g/day is comparable to Cabbage but lower than Water Spinach. Cucumber is a trellis crop that regrows, so its total output depends on how many harvests you complete.

• Plant on day 1 of Summer: Starting early gives you the maximum number of harvest cycles. With a 1-day turnaround, every day you delay is a harvest you miss.

• Use Paddy Fields to skip watering: If you have Paddy Fields available, planting Water Spinach there saves time and stamina since the flooded soil handles irrigation automatically. Reserve your Farmland plots for crops that cannot grow in Paddy Fields.

• Cook Stir-Fried Water Spinach for stamina: The recipe requires only 4 Water Spinach (one full harvest) and restores 58 stamina. Carry a few servings as field food while exploring or mining.

• Use sprinklers on Farmland plots: Since you will be replanting daily, automated watering via sprinklers saves significant time on larger Water Spinach fields.

• Gift Water Spinach to Graminova: She loves it, and you are already visiting her shop for seeds. Raising her friendship level unlocks additional rewards and dialogue.

• Process surplus into Vegetable Juice: If you have more Water Spinach than you can sell or cook, run them through the Separator to make Vegetable Juice. It is one of the most frequently required cooking ingredients and having a stockpile saves time later.
