Overview
Ducks are the third livestock species unlocked in Starsand Island, available alongside Chickens at the Junior Rancher tier. They are purchased from Pastelle at Green Pasture Ranch for 300 Coins each, or occasionally found in the wild. Ducks are housed in Duck Coops and produce Eggs and Feathers daily. Their defining feature is Snail Control: each standard duck eats up to 5 snails per day from nearby crops (the Super Rare Glazed Duck eats up to 15 snails per day), making them indispensable when farming rice in paddy fields.

Variants
There are four duck variants in Starsand Island. The Common Duck is available for purchase and can sometimes be found in the wild. The remaining three are breeding-exclusive.
Variant | Rarity | How to Obtain | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
Common Duck | Common | Purchase (300 Coins) or found in the wild | A common duck with yellow feathers. Helps clear snails from rice fields, eating up to 5 snails per day. |
Rare | Breeding (Common + Common) | A rare subspecies with white feathers. Helps clear snails from rice fields, eating up to 5 snails per day. | |
Rare | Breeding (Common + Common) | A rare subspecies with natural green-tinted feathers. Helps clear snails from rice fields, eating up to 5 snails per day. | |
Super Rare | Breeding (Common + White, or White + Jade) | A super rare mutated duck with feathers like glass and a glowing translucent appearance. Helps clear snails from rice fields, eating up to 5 snails per day. |
The White Duck and Jade Duck both appear as mutations when breeding two Common Ducks. The Glazed Duck is the super rare variant, obtainable by breeding a Common Duck with a White Duck, or a White Duck with a Jade Duck. Its glass-like feathers give it one of the most visually distinctive appearances among all animals in the game.
Products
Ducks produce several byproducts collected from the Duck Coop. Product quality improves with higher happiness.
Product | Source | Usage |
|---|---|---|
All variants (daily, when fed and petted) | Processing and cooking ingredient. Used in cooking recipes and as NPC gifts. | |
Feather | All variants (daily, alongside eggs) | Crafting material. Used in crafting recipes at the Worktable. |
All variants (at 150+ happiness) | Bounty item. Produced when a duck reaches high happiness. Required for some certification quests. | |
Poop | All variants (daily) | Fertilizer material. Processed in the Fertilizer Box for crop growth. |
Snail Control
Ducks automatically eat snails that appear on nearby crops, primarily targeting water crops growing in paddy fields. Each standard duck clears up to 5 snails per day with no manual intervention required. This makes ducks one of the most practical animals in the game for players who grow Rice, Water Caltrop, or other paddy crops.
To maximize snail control coverage, position your Duck Coops close to your paddy fields. Snails primarily target water-based crops and can reduce yields significantly if left unchecked. A full Duck Coop with four ducks can clear up to 20 snails per day, which is usually enough to keep a medium-sized paddy operation snail-free.
The Glazed Duck variant does not have a confirmed enhanced snail control rate according to the official game data. The wiki.gg Module:Animals/data lists all duck variants as clearing "up to 5 snails per day." While some guides suggest the Glazed Duck clears more, the in-game data files show the same rate for all four variants.
Care and Feeding
Duck care follows the same pattern as other poultry in the ranching system. Daily attention is important for maintaining egg production and happiness.
Task | Details |
|---|---|
Feeding | Duck Feed, purchased from Pastelle at Green Pasture Ranch or crafted at the Feeder. Feed daily for maximum happiness. |
Brushing | Use a Brush or Cleaning Pod every few days. Dirty ducks get the "Messy" status, reducing happiness and egg output. |
Petting | Required daily for egg production. Ducks that are not petted will not produce eggs, even if fed. |
Happiness | At 150+ happiness, ducks produce Giant Eggs in addition to regular eggs. Higher happiness also improves product quality (star rating). |
Breeding
Duck breeding requires one male and one female duck in the same Duck Coop with at least one open space. Breeding occurs overnight, once per day. Use the Breeding House (3,500 Coins, Intermediate Rancher) to isolate specific breeding pairs for controlled results.
Known breeding paths for duck variants:
Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
Breed two Common Ducks together. Random mutation chance. | |
Breed two Common Ducks together. Random mutation chance. | |
Breed Common + White Duck, or White Duck + Jade Duck for the best chance. |
To work toward the Glazed Duck, start by breeding Commons until you produce White and Jade variants. Then pair a White Duck with a Jade Duck for the highest probability of a Glazed mutation.
DNA Traits
Ducks inherit DNA traits that affect their productivity and breeding success. Prioritize positive traits and sell ducks with negative traits to maintain a clean gene pool.
Trait | Effect |
|---|---|
Workaholic | Increased daily work cycles (more snail clearing) |
Twins | 30% chance for multiple offspring when breeding |
Precocial | Growth period reduced by 1 day |
Strong | Breeding cooldown reduced by 1 day |
Optimism | 50% happiness boost chance, reduces brushing needs |
Tips
Place Duck Coops near paddy fields. Snails primarily target water crops like Rice and Water Caltrop.
Pet your ducks every day. Without petting, ducks will not produce eggs even if they are fed and happy.
To breed the Glazed Duck, start by breeding Commons until you get White and Jade variants, then pair them together.
Ducks and chickens both produce eggs and feathers, so running both gives you double the supply for cooking and crafting.
Four ducks in one Duck Coop can clear up to 20 snails per day from your paddy fields. This is usually enough for a medium rice farm.
Giant Eggs appear at 150+ happiness. Keep ducks well-fed, clean, and petted daily to reach this threshold.
Save eggs for cooking recipes rather than selling them raw. Cooked dishes sell for significantly more than raw eggs.
