Enemies and Bosses
October 8, 2026 at 02:17 PM
Bounded the launch boss roster and added the seasonal encounter and respawn changes
Enemies in Romestead range from the roaming walking dead to powerful bosses that gate progression. The reanimated citizens of fallen Rome are the core threat: the dead walk at night and hunt players. Bosses are found at the end of biome progression and inside the world's named locations.

After Rome fell, its citizens were reanimated into walking husks. They hunt players, with night being the most dangerous time. Defending a settlement against hordes is a recurring challenge, which is why building defenses and lighting torches matters. See Settlements and Buildings for defensive structures.
Fallen: standard reanimated citizens; basic melee.
Burning Fallen: fiery variant; appears in raids and around volcanic spawners.
Fallen Crawler: low-profile variant.
A Fallen Bloat variant also exists; the Autumn Update (0.26.1, August 31, 2026) made it explode faster. The same update made aggressive Fallen spawn less often near the edge of the Volcano, and the overhauled challenge dungeon rooms place ranged Fallen at chosen positions rather than letting everything rush the entrance.
The Early Access launch build contained five progression bosses. Defeating a biome's boss unlocks the next crafting tier, making bosses the gate between stages of progression.
Boss | Biome | Approx HP | Notable drops |
|---|---|---|---|
225 | Feathered armor set, Guardian's Eye, Talon, Feather, Coal, Copper Bar, Poisoned Arrow. | ||
500 | Cape of Pyzifax Banner, Sapphire, Tin Bar, plus a random pool (Assassin's Scroll, Fools' Gold, Gardener's Gloves, Locusta Legatus, Physician's Cloak, Scroll of Vulcan). | ||
Desert (The Eye dungeon) | 10,000 | Granite Tooth, Nail of the Cyclops, Cyclops Shard, Bonesplint, Linen, Bronze Bar, one of the Tectonic Helmet / Armor / Boots, Signet of Demo Completion. | |
Great Phoenix of Arabia | TBD | Volcanic boss drops; fiery two-phase fight. Its encounter resets immediately if the party wipes. | |
Talos Prototype | Volcano (Temple of Vulcan) | TBD | Volcanic boss drops. A multi-phase fight against a machine with four armoured weak points, only one of which is open to attack at a time. |
The Talos Prototype is the second Volcano boss and sits behind the Temple of Vulcan. The temple gates only open once a Craftsman's Offering is completed: the player brings four iron rods to marked plates outside the temple, which frees Vulcan from the pot he was trapped in, and he names the building whose materials must then be laid on the offering ground. Patch notes have repeatedly touched this area, easing access to the Vulcan levers and adding Vulcan Temple and Phoenix markers to the world map.
Boss dungeons reset at the start of each day, so a cleared boss arena is ready again the next morning. Boss locations are no longer all revealed at once: each must still be discovered. The Guardian of Minerva and the Great Phoenix of Arabia fights reset immediately if your party is wiped.
Two boss fixes reached the default branch with the Autumn Update (0.26.1): the Cyclops fight could sometimes become unable to progress (first fixed on the beta branch in 0.25.2_5 on July 10, 2026), and the Phoenix fight received a new set of changes that had also been trialled on the beta branch. Hotfix 0.26.1_3 (September 1, 2026) fixed Phoenixes not dropping raw meat.
Threat | Detail |
|---|---|
Walking dead | Reanimated citizens that hunt players, especially at night. |
Biome bosses | Five launch progression bosses; each gates the next crafting tier. The October event adds a separate optional fight. |
Volcano bosses | Two legendary bosses within the Volcanic biome. |
Satyrs | Forest and Desert factions. Variants include Forest Satyr, Tiny Satyr (catapult units), Satyr Brute, Desert Satyr. Can be declared war on via dedicated items. No longer immune to auras since 0.26.1. |
Magus | Spellcaster enemy whose spell behaviour was improved in 0.26.1; can drop the Magus Ceres Scroll (the source of the day-one crash hotfix). |
Wraiths | High-spawn-rate Swamp ghosts. |
Lava Construct, Lava Lizard | Volcano biome native enemies; balanced repeatedly during playtest. |
Phoenix (Giant + Small) | Magical birds; the small Phoenix has its own death behavior; the Great Phoenix of Arabia, whose in-game boss banner reads Giant Phoenix, has a flame breath attack. |
Wildlife | Bears, boars, wolves, deer (including a unique white deer), goats, snakes, scorpions, vultures (day-only aggro), pigs, mice, squirrels. Since 0.26.1 snakes are immune to poison and root, scorpions can be set burning, and small animals picked up by a player no longer despawn. |
The Eye dungeon boss; mid-game ten-thousand-HP fight. | |
Owl of Minerva | Plains boss; status-effect susceptible since patch 0.20.2_5. |
Magus Ceres | Scroll-wielding caster variant. |
Gorgon | Rare desert spawn added in a launch-week hotfix; since the Autumn Update (0.26.1) rare Gorgon swarms can also spawn inside challenge dungeon rooms. A dangerous serpent-haired foe, separate from the Medusa enemy tied to the Blacksmith quest (the Medusa's Lair dungeon was updated in patch 0.26.1_4). |
Ashmen | Enemy named in the Autumn Update notes: a bug that made Ashmen take only 1 damage from fire spells was fixed in 0.26.1. |
Arrow Trap | Dungeon trap that the game handles as an enemy. It received its own sprite in 0.26.1 and an art fix in 0.26.1_5. |
Elite teleporting enemies | Elite variants that teleport; since 0.26.1 they no longer teleport off the map. |
Summoned enemies | Enemies summoned during a fight no longer drop loot (0.26.1). |
Rats | Appear as rat packs inside the overhauled challenge dungeon rooms (0.26.1); the Rats faction can also be declared war on via its dedicated item. |
Mundus Cerialis, added on October 1, 2026, introduces one additional boss fight and a new enemy variant. The announcement does not name either. The seasonal challenge becomes available after clearing the Desert bosses, and end-game gear is recommended.
Version 0.26.2_3 also adds a death respawn timer and increases the respawn time while a boss is active. Improved pathfinding should make enemies and animals less inclined to run into water. The patch gives no exact timer values.
Beyond the per-enemy notes above, the Autumn Update (0.26.1, August 31, 2026) listed a general enemy balancing pass, fixes to stunning some enemies, and, inside dungeons, limited enemy wandering, updated aggro areas and new packs of enemy encounters. Full lists are on Updates and Patches.
Raids are part of the game and were included in the Early Access balance pass alongside combat, bosses, and other systems. Factions can declare war on the player via dedicated items (Desert Satyrs, Gray Satyrs, Potmen, Rats, Pyzifax). Raid objectives now only count raids started by players, not ambient horde spawns. The Burning Fallen Horde is a launch-window raid that was hotfixed to stop appearing after the first boss.
See Raids for the full raid system, Combat for combat styles useful against these threats, and Crafting and Progression for how defeating bosses advances the player.
Skeletons also appear as a tougher Ashen Skeleton variant. The two no longer fight each other, so a mixed group attacks the player as one rather than thinning itself out.
