Overview
Outbound takes place in a utopian near-future world that is largely unpopulated by human characters. In place of traditional NPCs, the game world is filled with wild animals that players can observe, feed, and befriend. The camper van cannot run over animals; the game deliberately avoids any mechanic that would harm wildlife. Animals appear across all biomes, and the types you encounter can change depending on the weather and time of day.
Interacting with Animals
Players can feed and pet wild animals they come across in the world. Feeding rabbits heaps of berries, for example, can attract an entire group of bunnies that follow the player around. This interaction is entirely optional and carries no survival penalty for ignoring it. The game encourages a relaxed approach to wildlife encounters: you stop, watch, and interact on your own terms.
Wildlife and Biomes
Different locations are home to different species. The weather system also affects which animals are present at any given location. The same clearing might host different creatures on a sunny afternoon compared to a rainy evening. This creates variety during exploration even when revisiting familiar areas.
In The Outdoors, the starting biome features forests, open plains, wheat fields, and mountains. Wildlife here includes rabbits and various small creatures. The Coast introduces tropical shores, rocky cliffs, and lush forests with redwood trees and palm trees, bringing a different set of animals suited to the coastal environment.
Bobblehead Collectibles
Players can collect bottle caps scattered throughout the world and spend them at vending machines to receive animal bobblehead figurines. These bobbleheads can be placed on the van's dashboard as decorations. The bobblehead collection serves as a secondary collectible alongside cairns and gnomes, giving exploration-focused players something to hunt for beyond basic resources.
Companion Animals
In addition to wild animals, players can adopt a dog companion at the Paws & Whiskers Lodge. The dog is a functional gameplay companion rather than purely cosmetic, capable of fetching items and carrying supplies. For full details on the companion system, see the pets article.
