Overview
The family tree system in inZOI tracks bloodlines and relationships across multiple generations within a single save. Every Zoi belongs to a household, and the family tree records parent-child connections, marriages, and extended relations. The system was overhauled in Update #3 (v0.4.0, released October 30, 2025) and received further visual improvements in the December 2025 update.
Household basics
Each household can hold up to 8 Zois at one time, regardless of their ages or relationships to each other. Households share a single pool of Meow (the in-game currency) and live together in the same home. Zois within a household can interact freely, share meals, use the same furniture, and build relationships with each other throughout daily life.
Household composition can range from a single Zoi living alone to a multi-generational family with grandparents, parents, and children all under one roof. Unrelated Zois can also share a household as roommates.
Splitting and merging households
Players can reorganize their households at any time through the City Map interface. The workflow is:
Press M to open the City Map.
Select Manage Zois.
Choose Manage Family.
Select Move Zois Between Families to transfer individual Zois between existing households or create new ones.
When splitting a household, assets (Meow currency) must be manually divided between the two resulting households. The game does not automatically split funds. Players set the exact amount each household receives before confirming the split.
Merging works in reverse: select a Zoi from one household and move them into another, as long as the target household has fewer than 8 members. The moved Zoi brings no currency from their original household unless the player transfers funds beforehand.
Pregnancy and inheritance
Pregnancy lasts 3 in-game days from conception to birth. When a baby is born, it inherits a combination of physical and behavioral attributes from both parents:
Hair color: blended or selected from either parent's hair color.
Eye color: inherited from one or both parents, with some random variation.
Facial features: bone structure, nose shape, jawline, and other facial geometry are mixed from both parents' facial data.
Traits: babies inherit a set of traits influenced by their parents' trait pools, though the exact combination includes some randomness.
Babies begin as Newborns (lasting 1 in-game day) and then advance through the life stages system automatically. Players cannot directly control Newborns or Toddlers but can interact with them through adult Zois in the household.
The family tree interface
Family trees are accessed through the Zoi Card interface, which displays biographical information for each Zoi. The tree view shows:
Direct parent-child connections with lines drawn between nodes.
Married or partnered couples linked visually.
Siblings grouped under shared parents.
Extended family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins) where applicable.
Update #3 (v0.4.0) introduced the ability to connect the family trees of two or more households. Before this update, trees were isolated per household. Now, when a Zoi from Household A marries or has a child with a Zoi from Household B, the two trees link together into a single connected view.
The December 2025 update added a further visual improvement: images of immediate family members now appear directly in the family tree, making it easier to identify each Zoi at a glance. Previously, the tree displayed only names and relationship labels.
Planned improvements for 2026
The 2026 Roadmap outlines several planned expansions to the family system. These include:
Non-blood family relations: step-parents, step-siblings, and other relations formed through marriage rather than birth.
Autonomous marriage and divorce: Zois will be able to marry or divorce without direct player input, driven by their relationship status and emotions.
Affection interactions: new interaction types for expressing affection between family members and romantic partners.
Varied grief reactions: different Zois will react to death and loss in distinct ways based on their traits and closeness to the deceased.
Multiple breakup outcomes: separations will have a wider range of consequences, from amicable splits to bitter fallout.
Enhanced genetics: more detailed inheritance of physical features across generations, with rarer trait combinations and visible family resemblance over three or more generations.
Baby events: new scenarios and interactions tied to Newborn and Toddler stages.
Family photo shoots: a dedicated Photo Mode feature for posing and capturing family portraits.
These features are expected to roll out across multiple updates in 2026, starting in Q2 with family relation improvements.
Tips
Before splitting a household, write down or screenshot the current Meow balance so you can divide it fairly.
If you want a specific trait combination on a baby, check both parents' trait pages on their Zoi Cards before attempting pregnancy.
Connecting two family trees requires at least one cross-household relationship (marriage or child). Simply being friends is not enough.
Use the family tree to track which Zois are related before starting a romance to avoid unintended pairings between relatives.
